Being the novice I was, when I was about 12 I "rescued" 2 bettas from a Pets Mart and put them both into separate, cheap, tiny little novelty tanks, and that's how they lived for about a year and a half until I bought my third one and put him into a 5 gallon tank. I instantly noticed the difference!

My 3rd Betta was flying all over the place, he was noticeably happier, responded faster (in a non-aggressive way) when I'd come near the tank, and he lived for a little more than 3 and a half years! My other two barely made it to 2 years. They were depressed, uninterested, slow to respond...everything you don't want your Betta to be. And once I moved them into larger 3 gallon tanks each, they perked up like none other!

Betta's need to be in 3-10 gallon tanks by themselves (5 or larger and you might be able to add compatible fish, though I wasn't willing to risk it). In the wild, they live in rice paddies which are thousands of gallons of swimming space and naturally aerated and filtered, and only live in "small puddles" for about 2 or 3 months (at most) out of the year during the dry season.

What's more, while Wild bettas may be able to take smaller conditions longer and survive better, the fancy bettas we see in the stores today are not nearly as durable or hardy and need more stimulation and space.

This "tank" has no filtration, has little space for the Betta, and isn't much better than the initial cup they come in.

Don't do it. it's just cruel.

I opened the box and it was shattered. Hardly any bubble packaging. I had to return it. Pretty disappointed. It says large, but not nearly large enough for what I needed. I suppose in all fairness if the merchant had packaged it correctly, and it wasn't shattered, then maybe it would make a nice little log for a small fish tank. It just didn't serve my purpose.

Really nice media bag for larger media. I'm using it in a Fluval 206. It's certainly a good deal for two bags. I got it hoping that it would work with Seachem's Purigen. No go. Don't get it for Purigen. The Purigen is too small and just flows out through the mesh.

However, it does work just great with Seachem's Phosguard.

It has nice reusable bag clips to seal the bag.

These media bags are a good size and the material seems fairly durable. The plastic closures that come with the bags are easy to use and stay securely in placeI like them much better than string ties. They are a little pricier than most other media bags but will probably last much longer.

I have been very pleased with these reusable Hagen media bags. They are "wearing" well after 3 months and monthly refills, they seem well-stitched and durable, and hold plenty of media (truthfully, more than I need for a Fluval 205 and Aquaclear 20's). One nice feature is the clasp that holds the bag closed can be "cinched" down on the media, so you can put in as little or as much media as you like.

The only thing I'd change is making that clasp a little less large, or offering a smaller bag--it's pretty big for an Aquaclear. That's not a showstopper, though, and I'd buy these again in the future.

You may have to move it a little to get the small vibrations quiet but after that, it is really, really quiet. The flow rate is not that much so I had to add a bubble wand on the other end of my 6.6 bookshelf to get the water moving. Overall I am very pleased with the unit.

good for tanks with very thin glass.. but anything larger then say a 20 gallon and it falls off.. magnets are just not strong enough.

While this thermometer is a good concept, with the magnet outside attaching the thermometer to the glass inside, it hasn't worked at all for me. I attached it to my newly filled tank for my betta and it read eighty degrees. The temperature wasn't changing as I let the water sit, so I decided to test it by turning my heater on. While I definitely noticed a major difference in the water temperature, the thermometer still read eighty. I bought it from a local pet store, and I will be bringing it back.

I previously had a thermometer than stuck on the outside of my old tank, and I was much happier with it. Despite the fact that it is inconvenient as it can't be removed and reused, I will be buying a new one for my new tank in place of this.

It's a good size thermo, but then it's easy to read. I put it on the side back of my tank so it's not that notice able. The magnet is so great compared to floating or suction cup designs I've used in the past.

We love it. My son is thrilled. It looks really nice in his tank and bubbles well. I don't know why it is Finding Nemo. There is nothing on the chest itself to indicate that.

The 1st one = after 2 years was too covered in black algae = tossed (this is my fault not a reflection on the product). Now that I'm smarter about the amount of time I leave my fish tank lights on, I needed to re-purchase. The 2nd one I bought was damaged in transit = effortless exchange for the one in my tank. These are pretty good, but they definitely look better in the picture. once I put them in the water they looked a little cheap, but my fish absolutely love them. They also don't rise up to the top of the tank like other plants.

I'm very pleased with the look of this plant. You can't really tell from the picture but on one side there is a cluster or purple leaves that add a great touch. The purple was a nice surprise and accents the red nicely. The plant is a nice size and has a nice weight to the base. Can't wait to add it to my tank.

Hagen Marina Betta Aquarium Starter Kit, Sun Swirl

I used this product for a time for my Betta Fish, Sun Tzu. HE liked the tank, it was bigger than the cup I bought him in, and he was making beautiful bubble nests (meaning he was looking to breed, and he was secure in raising his fry in the tank.) However, I do not breed my Betta, but it was good to know he was feeling so confident in only a half gallon of water. I wall mounted it to protect him from the cats, and bought the LED light (sold separately) and that was pretty cool. First I bought a plastic plant to go with, then I moved to a live plant because I heard they improve water quality. Then I researched and realized he needed tropical water, so I bought a thermometer. I saw his water temp. was fluctuating between night and day (duh), and I was worried the temperature flux was putting to much stress on his tiny fishy body. I was also getting very tired of needing to do water changes every four days. SO... I ditched this tank and bought a 10 gallon tank complete with lighted hood, and power filter for less than what I payed for this tank (full price at the local national pet store chain). I put in a thermostat heater and some full spectrum lights (for growing aquarium plants) and bada-bing bada-boom, I have a beautiful planted tank, the center piece to my apartment, a VERY happy Betta fish with plenty of room to stretch his pretty little fins, plenty of places for him to hide if he wishes, and a tank that requires significantly LESS maintenance than this half gallon. That's just the up and down of it. I still keep this tank around for a back up, in case something needs quarantining, or if the Zombie Apocalypse happens and I need to take him and run. (I had a dream the apartment was on fire, and I used this to rescue him. Not a bad idea! ;D)

IN CONCLUSION: This tank is not cruelty. My fish was lively and making bubble nests when he lived there for three months, but in all honesty, a non-filtered tank requires WAY more maintenance, and if you slack off, you could end up seriously hurting or killing your fish. Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites, all things you need to be wary of, and it's so much easier to just get a proper tank, something with a thermostat heater and a filter. Betta need water between 75 and 80 degrees to live comfortably. They are tropical fish.

WALL MOUNTING: Yes, you can screw it to your wall, but then the tank part is removable from the wall mount, making for easy water changes. You do not have to unscrew and remove the whole thing from the wall to change the water. You simply lift the tank off of it's wall mount/stand, do your do, and place it back. SUPER SUPER easy! Props for that, it's the best wall mounted tank money can buy. If you're cool with the constant water changes, then go for it.

Betta need at least 2.5 gallons and either need daily or every other day water changes without a filter (really just simpler to get a filter for the tank), and a water temperature between 70 and 80 degrees (so most need a heater). This tank doesn't really allow any of these requirements. Another reviewer said it wasn't cruelty and her betta was happy I sincerely disagree. Her fish may have been happier than it was, but that's because it has only been in breeding tanks (basically the size of this tank) and the cup you get him in from the store. He's happier than he was, but that isn't saying much, and he still won't be very happy in this setup. This allows for next to no decorations, which betta like since they provide hiding places and places to explore. The only thing I'd put in one of these is a marimo moss ball. It isn't worth the money, just look into a better tank setup so your betta can really be happy.

My fish love this food. The granuales are fairly small which is perfect for smaller fish like Damsels and Clown fish. Most of the food sinks reasonably slowly, so don't feed too much at one time. Not all retailers sell this food, so stock up or buy it when you see it.

Exotic Environments Incan Vase Aquarium Ornament, Small

I have this ornament in a 10 gallon freshwater tank. I prefer an ornament to a the focal point amongst plants and driftwood, but not overbearing. I would not personally recommend it for a smaller size tank, as I feel it would be a little too large. That being said, I'm very happy with it. I was looking for a South American theme, so this is perfect. Small fish have swim holes for play. I ran airline tubing into it, and have air bubbles gently rising from the center of the vase.

The ornament is beautiful. However, had strong chemical odor and fell apart in one month. I pulled it out of the aquarium by the handle and it fell off.

Python Aquarium Replacement Pump

I've been using the same Python no-spill and fill unit for almost 30 years. The original pump finally broke and I replaced it. Not a bad record for things milled from plastic. There is no comparison between the work of changing the water in a 75-gallon tank using the Python versus using a garden hose and buckets. From 10 gallons to 100 gallons plus, a Python no-spill and fill is the ONLY sane way to do a water change.

I had one like this, but it was manufactured by Lee's. It broke due to me misplacing it and putting weight on it. I read some reviews of this python pump and decided to buy it. The plastic is very cheap-feeling. I tried to screw it on my adapter, the one which changes faucet threads to hose threads, and the threads started to strip on the pump. I checked everything and it still did the same thing. Took off the python and hooked up the threaded part of the Lee's to the adaapter and it had no problems. After 1 use, the python threads looked worse than the years of use I got from the Lee's. This one is not going to last, but I will use it till it's exhausted it's life cycle. Stay away from this garbage and get a Lee's pump valve.

Replacement for broke one. This one also squirts by the neck. Always disconnect hose before moving the hose, so it doesn't wiggle the pump, and break it. FINGER TIGHT ONLY!!! or you will wear down the cheap, plastic screw grooves.

This works well and is a replacement for the orginal Python pump. Design appears unchanged. The fitting of the siphon unit into the pump remains the same and is the weakness in the design. This joint can come loose and the pump fails to work. Over tightening of the joint causes failure in the siphon and required replacement. Be gentle in tighening the siphon into the pump or you will have to replace it like we did. In other words, be gentle with it.

This plant is perfect! I Love the color, it brings so much life to the tank. The movement of these plants is beautiful, but because it is so soft and tall it doesn't really stand straight up. It becomes kind of vine like, and moves around a lot.

Perfect for my needs, because I have a lot of driftwood in my tank to hold it where I want it. This is my turtle's favorite plant as well, he has made his "den" underneath it. I am switching to all silk Vibran-sea plants in my 55 gallon turtle tank, and I think I'll end up with 2 extra-large, and 3 large to give it a full effect.

Very flimsy. From the day I placed it in the tank it fell over and and has not moved since. It is sitting at the opposite end of the tank where it is out of the water flow, so that is not the cause. It is basically a trash collector for food bits and algae. Next tank cleaningin the bin it goes.

First off let me say this, this picture does not do this product justice. The product that I received clearly does not look like the picture. I was happy with this product at first, except that it didn't stand up right, the plastic was a little flimsy and would not stand up straight. I solved this issue with a small plastic rod and zip-ties to hold it in place. The biggest issue came a few months later when I saw that my filter were picking up little blue filaments. The silk plants do not last and the blue stuff goes into my filters. One last issue I had is these plants are pretty hard to clean. Perhaps I'm not cleaning them correctly, but if algae gets on them they are there to stay. They are pretty to look at in the water, but not worth the trouble. I'm going to stick with plastic aquarium plants from now on.

I really liked the way this plant looked when I got it, it looks great in the water and moves around like a real plant would. I am disappointed because it has stained a lot. I've tried cleaning it, to no avail. I've read that you shouldn't use bleach to clean anything that will go back in an aquarium so it seems that there aren't too many other options. Nice looking plant if you can figure out a way to clean it.

Picked up two of these Vibran-Sea tall silk plants paired with one medium and they fill up my 75gal tank perfectly. I've had to clean them once in the last six months due to algae buildup. Just lightly scrubbed them under warm water and let them sit in water with bleach. Cleaned them off with declor and other recommended chemicals to neutralize the bleach and they came out with no discoloration or fading. I've got a 175 gal filter on the tank and it does have a tendency to blow over the plants and move them slightly, but this could be because I use a sand substrate. Very vibrant colors in the purple and blue, I'll be sticking with this company to purchase any more plants in the future for my aquarium needs.

I went online and to different stores and this was definitely the best one that i could find, I love the design and it looks pretty good in my aquarium.

When I got this bubbler I did what other reviewers said and soaked it in bleach and water for 2 hours, hooked it up and it bubbled very well, good size bubbles across the whole length of the bubbler. I anchored it well with an old door piece of iron and used trash bag ties to tie it. If the iron causes problems I will change it, but for now it is doing great. I couldn't ask for more. I would not hesitate to buy again!

I was apprehensive about buying any bubbler stone at all, since the web is full of bad reviews for such items. This one worked like a charm. It stays at the bottom of the tank, and has bubbles across most of its width. It was very helpful that I bought an air pump with an adjustable output, as it allowed me to customize the amount of bubbles to my liking. I had not bought a check valve for the air line, and I'll have to buy one next. I was surprised to see that when I shut off the air pump, water moves up the air line by itself, which I would guess would be by capillary force.

Nutrafin Betta Bowl Conditioner, 2 Ounces

Despite the tannins in its almond leaf extract, this product is alkaline. Bettas prefer their water slightly acid. I'm having a hard time getting my tank back to the proper pH with Betta Plus in the water.

Chlorine dissipates from tap water if it sits uncovered for a day. Nitrates, nitrites and ammonia are needed by plants. You keep them from reaching toxic levels by doing regular partial water changes. If Betta Plus does anything more to condition the water, I would like to know what it is.

I Googled Nutrafin's #5942232 "Stress Reducing" formula. It appears to be for a concoction of chemical and herbal remedies that have not been proven to be beneficial to fish. If your Betta's water is properly maintained, and he is still stressed, therapy should bring better results.

Betta Plus neutralizes any active chlorine in the water; that is the only reason I gave this product one star.

I must agree with the previous comment about this product being too alkaline. I bought this product due to the Indian Almond leaf extract which I know is beneficial to bettas being a part of their natural habitat. But my pH rose too much while using this. Bettas do prefer their water slightly on the acid side & this product raised my pH up to 7.6 which is too alkaline.

I stopped using this & now do my water changes with another water conditioner. I also bought some Indian Almond leaves & have added them to his tank.
