Marina "Meridian", 64 to 86-Degree Fahrenheit / 18 to 30-Degree Celsius

Marina 'Meridian', 64 to 86-Degree Fahrenheit / 18 to 30-Degree CelsiusI'm not sure why I was thinking that this was going to be a thermometer that was to be placed on the INSIDE of the aquarium. It's basically like a sticker that detects temperature change. Had I actually taken the time to read the product description on this thermometer, I probably wouldn't have spent the $6.50. Although I did receive free 2-day shipping... I probably wouldn't have paid more than $3.50 at a Pet Store or something. The choice is yours.

Hagen CO2 Natural Plant System Bubble Counter with Suction Cup and Tubing

Hagen CO2 Natural Plant System Bubble Counter with Suction Cup and TubingThis bubble counter is included in the Hagen Plant Grow Natural System. It is probably one of the most efficient methods of dissolving CO2 into the aquarium water when not using a forced water method.

I think this unit is better than using an air stone, bubbling into an upside down cup and certainly better than just letting an air line bubble into the tank.

In my experience, you will still have CO2 loss because not all the bubbles will be dissolved before they run through the unit and bubble to the surface of the water. However, it is still fairly efficient and very easy to set up. All you do is attached the air line that is connected to your CO2 source to the plastic drip tip that is included and then the bubbles slowly pass through a maze of bubble paths, dig zagging their way until they reach the top of the unit. Like I said, there will still be bubbles that pass through the top and disperse to the surface of the water.

My preferred method to diffusing CO2 bubbles into the water is by forcing water to mix with the bubbles. This can easily be accomplished by using a Rio Power head connected to a small bottle that the CO2 line is also connected to. This should completely dissolve the CO2 bubbles. You can find an already made system online for around 35-50 bucks. Or you can make one yourself for around 15 bucks. I made my own and it works beautifully. You also get the added benefit of having extra water current flow (which most fish appreciate).

But for a simple, cheap and easy to set up solution for dissolving CO2 bubbles into the aquarium, this Hagen diffuser is a good way to go. Make sure when you set it up that you set the unit as low as it will go in the aquarium (the bottom touching the gravel) so that the CO2 bubbles have maximum time to travel before reaching the water surface (and after that wasted).

As far as just a bubble counter, this is probably the most fun unit to watch that you can buy. My kids love watching the bubbles zig zag through the unit until the bubbles reach the top (cheap entertainment).

Don't be dismayed if at first it seems like the bubbles are getting built up in certain areas. This is part of the break-in process and it will fix itself. Once some bio-slime (mmmm, bio slime...) gets built up on it, the bubbles go up the ladder smoothly.

I'm using mine with a homemade CO2 system and I'm already seeing results. I would recommend "The Ladder" to anyone who is using a DIY method and doesn't have enough pressure to properly utilize a ceramic diffuser. Plus, you don't really need a separate bubble counter to monitor your CO2 output. You can see every bubble that comes out and tailor your CO2 production accordingly.

Summary: for the price, seems to work great. Low tech and effective.

Buy Hagen CO2 Natural Plant System Bubble Counter with Suction Cup and Tubing Now

I have used a glass/ceramic diffuser for two years with my yeast based co2 system. This worked well enough and plants have grown pretty well. However, these do get blocked and there is a danger of back pressure causing the bottles to explode. They can be cleaned but sometimes difficult to remove the hose once it becomes hardened without breaking the glass. I also tired of seeing all those tiny bubbles floating around the tank.

I don't know exactly how much co2 dissolved in terms of ppm, however, pH fell from 7.9/8.0 to 7.3/7.4 when I started injecting it 2 yrs ago, so seems pretty effective.

As the diffuser was due for replacement again I decided to try a ladder this time it's brilliant!

I agree that it looks pretty cool to watch, and yes, the bubbles did clump at first but after leaving it overnight it was working properly the following morning. I did fiddle with the angle for some time I think you just need to leave it alone and give it time to settle.

I no longer have loads of tiny bubbles and my pH has dropped further now to 7.0, so this is definitely getting more into the water than the ceramic diffuser did. I also found that the old diffuser tended to create much finer bubbles when the mixture started to tire and the flow rate subsided, meaning that more probably dissolved than did when the mixture was fresh.

The bubbles get much smaller as they travel up the ladder, and as they decrease in size they also slow down. This means they catch up with each other, merge, and pop out of the top about the same size as the bubbles which enter at the bottom. However, they enter at 1 per second at the bottom and pop out of the top about every 10 seconds. This suggest a 90% absorption rate (hope that makes sense!).

Some day these are hard to disguise. This model attaches flat to the side so isn't very wide from the front view at all it is not intrusive in my tank at all.

Of course, the system is now low pressure so the danger of explosion is eliminated.

This is one of the best setups especially if you are running a DIY CO2 system (basically a bottle with sugar and yeast :)

IT is a bubble counter and a difuser all in one. You can watch the bubbles travel up the ladder and if you install a control valve you can adjust how many bubbles come out.

Be careful with installing control valves on diy CO2 as if you close it too much it can blow up and cause a huge mess. Please research these methods before just slapping a bottle together and putting it on your tank

Back to product it is great. If at first you don't succeed wait. :)

Seems to be a very efficient co2 diffuser. Give it about a day for the natural slime to build up on it so the bubbles will slide easily. Good quality stuff, Very easy to set up!

4" Magical Mini-Castle Resin Aquarium Ornaments

4' Magical Mini-Castle w/Red Roof Aquarium OrnamentI also overestimated the size of 4" and it is really tiny. I love it though. It's such a nice piece and it has so much depth and dimension and looks so cool underwater. I'm currently waiting for one of the larger Penn Plax castles to arrive and I think the two of them together will look so cool in my 20 gallon betta tank. Definitely a good buy!

My castle looks beautiful in my tank, soon acheter new accessories with this vendor, I recommend are good quality, thanks.

Aquatics 6" Airstone

Aquatics 6' AirstoneLooks just as in the pic, stay at the bottom and the bubbles are quite nice, my aquarium looks better with this air stone.

Not much to say it works like it's supposed too. This type of airstone doesn't last long. For me I usually buy new ones at least annually. If they lasted a couple of years, I would of rated them 5 stars.

Como 5pcs Aquarium Tank Ornamental Plastic Floating Sea Fish

Como 5pcs Aquarium Tank Ornamental Plastic Floating Sea FishPut one in the tank to see how it worked. It stayed at the surface with its dorsal fin sticking out. My Betta checked it out from every possible angle as soon as it was in the water and went back to his favorite spot laughing all the way. That was good I did not think my Betta could have taken a chunk out of it but did not think one would go down well. It says to have some current or moving water. I do and it soon went to the filter which creates a good current and just floated there. The current went just below so it stayed right there at the filter as if glued. All the other four in the bag were repeats other than my Betta took one glance and just shook his head at them. It looked nice to me (not my Betta) and if it floated about the ten gallon tank at all would have been a nice addition. Stuck in one place it has no attraction and would be just one more thing to clean. Had it sank to around mid level of the tank I think I would have been much pleased with its performance.

Chemi-Pure Elite - 46.98 oz.

Chemi-Pure Elite - 46.98 oz.We have used Chemi-pure for over 10 years and it works better than just activated carbon MUCH better!

We have a 150 gal with eheim classic canister filter and we put it in the filter and it makes the water crystal clear and sparkle.

The fish are showing better color using this. Highly recommend it!

I placed it in my 125G tank (The box says its for 175-220G) and the next day the water was crystal clear. My fish are very healthy and I don't have any issues so far.

Reef Care NO3:PO4-X Nitrate and Phosphate Reducer - 16.9 oz.

Reef Care NO3:PO4-X Nitrate and Phosphate Reducer - 16.9 oz.Read the reviews and thats why got this product, had hi nitrate in my 60 gal cube saltwater tank.

I also read the instructions, were found a bit confusing, I dropped 3 ml pretty close to the powerhead to diffuse the solution. But did nothing with the nitrate levels.

The second day dropped 10 ml.(11am) and left for work... Came home around 5 pm and all the fishes were DEAD. 2 clowfishes, a blue and yellow tang, a goby and 3 cleaner shrimps... :( took a water sample and went with my LFS, he tested and said the amonia levels were 0, nitrite levels were extremely HIGH and nitrate levels were still high, but because the nitrite is very toxic, that was the cause of the dead.

Changed 50% of the water and waited a week to get a new fish. Now that I got everything again, I wont put that solution again in my tank.

I know, you might say, that is because might had put a lot on it, but the instructions were not clean at all.

So be careful

I gave this 5 stars as it far exceeded my expectations.

Instructions are easy to understand, important is to know your tanks water volume, including sump.

I started to see algae deminism within a few days and completely gone within a week.

Combine this with a different feeding regiment and your tank looks like the ones in the magazines.

The process is biological, not chemical, something I liked too.

Buy Reef Care NO3:PO4-X Nitrate and Phosphate Reducer - 16.9 oz. Now

After a long battle to reduce organic waste that was feeding algae blooms of all sorts on my reef aquarium I found this amazing product, within days my nitrates came down to 0 ppm! Algae is gone now and my corals are looking simply beautiful. The product should me used in conjunction with Reef Energy A and Reef Energy B to provide nourishment for your corals and a good efficient skimmer. In my case I started with the recommended dose but since then I have come down to 1/4 and still I think it's more than enough. My advice is to start slow, 1/4 for a week and then measure your nitrates , adjust your dose accordingly in small weekly increments, reefs don't react nicely to sudden changes!

Tetra 77181 TetraFin Goldfish Crisps, 7.76-Ounce , 1-Liter

Tetra 77181 TetraFin Goldfish Crisps, 7.76-Ounce , 1-LiterGoldfish Crisps are a lot like the flake food most people are familiar with, but compressed into a harder thicker flake. This type of flake is hard for a smaller fish to eat, so if you have small goldfish in the 1" 2" range, you probably don't want to buy this product. I'm sure that it will soak, expand, soften and become edible to a smaller fish, but I don't recommend it.

However, if you've had goldfish for a while and they're closer to the 6" range, flake food becomes increasingly wasteful. These compressed flakes are cheaper, less messy, and easier to "measure" proper nutrition -one crisp being adequate food for 1" of fish. While I don't count out flakes for 10 6" 8" fish, I developed a good feel for the correct amount of food... which I never really did with normal flake food.

I have a small 3" goldfish and also a large 8" goldfish in one large tank. I am always struggling to find a food they both can enjoy eating. These crisps seemed perfect so I tried them out only to have to clean my freshly cleaned tank in approximately two days of using them because of the STRONG RED Dye they use to make these flakes a desirable looking color. If tetra would leave the dye out of these crisps they would be fantastic! Until then it back to a small mix of flake food and Koi pellets.

I purchased this because the price was good. I also heard that the "crisps" leave less fish poop. However, I notice that it makes the tank water reddish. I much prefer the water to be clear.

I normally feed my three goldfish pellets or flakes, the most commonly available food in my town without a pet food store. I purchased the Tetra crisps on a whim, but I've found that this product works great and my fish love it, too. Not that they're picky or anything. The product prides itself on leading to a cleaner tank and less mess. It's right on one point there really is less mess in pouring these in and feeding them, and unlike the flakes, I don't find them in my filter later or coating the sides of the tank. The tank, though, is still as dirty as ever, but I can't really complain about this product. The fish love it, the bottle makes feeding easy, and I don't have to pick out leftovers. I'd definitely recommend this product to goldfish owners, but don't expect it to really do much in the cleaner water department.

My tank was always a bit dingy when I used flake food. I accidentally bought these "crisps" and my fish loves them, and my tank is sparkling clean!!! I don't obey the "one flake per inch" rule. My fish is 3 inches and he/she eats about 8-10 flakes twice a day. Also, I have a 3 year old who can pinch the perfect amount of these crisps. With flakes, he always pinched too many.

New Life International Spectrum Freshwater Flake With Garlic 45g

New Life International Spectrum Freshwater Flake With Garlic 45gI will have to say that I am amazed at the difference in my fish tanks after using New Life Spectrum flakes (and wafers). My fish not only look much brighter and healthier, but they act differently too. They are full of life, and much more apt to interact with me more, and they also line up daily to get fed, something they didn't do to this degree with any other food. I have used Omega One, Ocean Nutrition, San Francisco Bay Company, and a few other foods, but nothing has given me this drastic of a reaction. I can not recommend this food highly enough. I will caution you, however, that there are very tiny flakes and very large flakes in this jar. You can easily break them up, but the very tiny flakes might be too much for larger fish to find.

I feed this to all of my fish and they all love it including the betta fish and rainbows. They love it and are doing so well now that I feel relieved that I can buy just two foods nowflakes, and Spectrum H20 Stable wafers and all of my fish are doing a lot better now. They don't seem to like the smaller pellets as they get lost in the gravel too easily.

I was looking for an All Glass brand aquarium hood light, and in seeing it shown as an ALL GLASS co. hood, I ordered it from the Amazon Marketplace. Upon receiving my parcel, it was an Aqueon brand light. Aqueon has apparently taken over the All Glass company and is selling its inferior quality hoods as "All Glass brand hoods". I have used an All Glass for over 15 years on one of my tanks and it still works perfectly. (It's the kind with the push button switch/ballast). What you get now is the Aqueon brand hood light, which lasts approximately a year and then burns up your tube lights -and then fails completely. I've been through that before and wanted to avoid another wasted venture. This was my e-mail reply from AllPet after explaining the situation and requesting a refund: "Thank you for your order. All Glass is Aqueon. The company changed its name". What terrific customer service.

Update 4/29/13: I just received an e-mail stating that my return request from AllPet has now been officially closed. It said, "Reason: your technical issue has been resolved". In other words, when a thief steals your money, then your technical issue has been resolved? So, in review of the whole fiasco, this is what is going on: "ALL GLASS" brand lights -which are amazingly still being shown in the photo and listing here -are no longer being manufactured. You will receive an inferior quality Aqueon light instead (made of totally different electrical components and not what you ordered). I'm disappointed to see Amazon continuing to run this listing as it is -because it's false. Enough said.

Zilla Light Incandescent Bulb

Zilla 09912 Night Black Heat Incandescent Bulb, 50-WattThey do provide heat but burn out very fast. First bulb 6 hours second bulb 24 hours.Have not tried third bulb.

I use this particular brand bulb for my evening lighting in several vivariums, and have used them for 18 months now. Recently I had a few go out, and it wasn't viable for me to hit the local pet store, so I grabbed them via Amazon Prime.

PROS:

* Great bulb for all day heat, or evening heat

* Excellent gentle "moonlighting"

* Quality, lasts a very long time

CONS:

* Ordered a couple, had one go out within seconds for no apparent reason (I'll bet it got knocked around in the mail). Might just pay off to order extras, you should have some on hand anyhow

OTHER:

* Amazon customer service is OUTSTANDING, they had a replacement bulb shipped to me the next day

* When installing these I feel it's best to leave no fingerprints or other body oils on the bulb, once it's screwed in. So use a soft cloth to tighten it, or once it's screwed in, wipe it clean

VIVARIUM HEATING INFO:

* Remember, proper heating for your pet (air and floor temperature) can mean the difference between not just happiness and stress, but proper digestion and life in general

* For many reptiles, floor temperature is most important, followed by air temperature. You'll need to measure floor temps to make sure it's within the proper range for your pet.

* One of these bulbs sitting on top of a 20L vivarium will heat the surface of a rock, which is 6" below the bulb, to about 98*. The floor temperature will be a little less. Use under-tank heaters for best results, such as Zoo Med ReptiTherm® Under Tank Heater, Medium

* Higher wattage means more output, it also means the closer an object or pet is to the bulb, the hotter it will be for them. Keep that in mind.

* Make sure your bulb is sized properly for your lighting enclosure, not only physically, but for the wattage as well. You don't want to put a 150watt bulb in a 100watt socket.

It provides warmth, which is its main function, but I gave only 4 stars because calling it "Black Heat" is a bit misleading. The bulb looks black when it's off, but it gives a purple light when on. At full intensity, it can interfere with sleep. If you need true darkness, get a ceramic heat lamp.

Read Best Reviews of Zilla Light Incandescent Bulb Here

I purchased two of these lightbulbs, and wish I hadn't, as the first one exploded (for no apparent reason) about 3 days after putting it to use as a chick brooder warmer. Thankfully I was close by and heard the sound, as glass shards were all over the brooder. I found a bit of blood, but haven't found an injury among the chicks. I had it screwed into an appropriate holder, it wasn't being touched by anything, and had plenty of circulating air around it I have no idea why it broke so explosively. DO NOT BUY IF YOU VALUE YOUR ANIMALS. I have the second bulb in use currently, with strong, fine wire mesh completely enclosing it just in case, and a second heat lamp different brand bulb just in case this one breaks also. As soon as I can buy a different bulb this one is going into the garbage.

Fluval Chi Cover

Fluval Chi CoverAfter losing several fish to jumping escapes, I was glad to see this product become available. It's a little expensive for a notched piece of plastic that, in my opinion, should've been included with the original tank. That said, it works perfectly and has the added bonus of minimizing splash marks around the outside of the tank and on the desk where I've placed my tank. The cover has pegs in the lower side to keep it in place and the top surface is beveled to encourage splashes from the bubbler to flow back into the tank. It seems to cut down on evaporation as well. I'm happy with my purchase.

I never had a problem with having a fish that attempted to jump out of the tank... but decided to purchase this lid just as a precautionary measure. For $10, I think the price is kind of on the steep side... but it fits on top of the tank perfectly. I wonder why fluval wont include this lid as part of the package? :/

Buy Fluval Chi Cover Now

I love my Fluval Chi but as with other Chi owners, my biggest problem with the design is the large amount of water evaporation and of course, suicidal fish jumpers. The cover does help with the fish issue, and since I've installed the cover, I haven't found a fish or ghost shrimp outside the tank. Unfortunately the evaporation is just as rampant as before the cover. I'm sure the cover does help a bit, but it's not really noticeable. What I do notice however, is the fact that these covers get "gunky" really quickly. Water drops will dry on the top, hanging droplets will leave marks on the underside, etc. While the covers are really easy to clean with just a little water and elbow grease, it is a weekly chore if you want to keep them looking nice.

That being said, while I've seen the Chi drop in price as low as the five to six dollar mark (but as high as sixteen!), it still seems pretty overpriced for what it is. If you can get your hands on some cheap polycarbonate or acrylic, it should work just as well if you don't mind a little DIY.

I had some fish that *loved* jumping out of the tank and dying (loaches). That, plus the crabs and snail adventures, prompted me to get this cover. It's really nice, but the only drawback it had no spot for the heater I had installed. That was easily fixed by cutting a small opening with my dremel, though ;)

Bonus: No more roommates shouting, "DAVE THERE IS A CRAB IN THE HALLWAY" at 7 am.

Want Fluval Chi Cover Discount?

First off, the lid itself is cheap and flimsy. one of the pegs to hold the lid in place broke off rather easily.

And lastly this lid has not prevented 2 Betta fish from jumping to their deaths. It leaves large gaps and does not work.

Hydor H2Show Magic World - Left Owl Decoration 13"x7"x3.5"

Hydor H2Show Magic World - Left Owl Decoration 13'x7'x3.5'It's beautifully made but has a few flaws. The back is hollow so if it pulls away from the tank wall, fish are tempted to go behind it and get stuck. The fact that it's top heavy and naturally leans towards the owl side means that you'll need to either bury the base into the gravel or silicone the piece to the tank wall. A wider, heavier base would've remedied that. Finally, unless you have a tall tank, the piece will need to be trimmed at either the top, bottom, or both ends in order to clear the tank lid, but if your tank is very tall, you might be able to see the unfinished top of the piece. If you don't mind a little work to get this setup well, it's a decent value.
