I was skeptical about this treatment. I always thought that it might harm the fish or not work well. I have to say, after our fish tank looked cloudy and then the algae took over, I was willing to try anything. After one treatment our tank was the best it had ever looked. This product works very well with help. I started having a great deal of algae in my tank a few months back despite frequent cleaning. The area where I have the tank gets direct sunlight no matter what I do. I noticed that this product took about 1 bottle over a period of 2 month to begin to work well. I used a brillow pad to scrub the rocks and other items in the tank free of algae and I had to apply the product directly to those items + the filter and let it sit before putting them back into the tank. The algae amount was less and less after each application when I would clean the tank again. I cleaned my tank every 14 days when this process started and within 2 months was able to get an extra week before cleaning.

Marineland LED Aquarium Kit

I bought this product at my local pet store, and thus far, have been happy with it. Marineland's 20 yr guarantee is what sold me--had been debating. Out of the box I was missing a 'lens', the clear part the light shines through. Called marineland customer service, and without too much difficulty, they are sending one out to me. Had to find the 'reorder part number', customer service rep sounded like had a very wide commercial and home product list, hard to pin point what I needed otherwise. About a ten minute wait to get to customer service.

Powerful bio-wheel filter included which was a real plus and helped me decide to go with this model. LED's are definitely cool, especially in night mode. A little concerned about corrosion--there has been some moisture gathering on LED light boards. I think the problem may be that the 'lens' is a snap-in model and is not sealed to prevent water vapor from reaching the lights. I put the light fixtures in gallon ziploc bags until I can figure something else out. Think I'm going to try using some aquarium sealant around the edges of the lens and see if that solves the moisture problem.

Hood otherwise seems pretty sturdy, though not impressed by the hood/tank clips to hold the hood on. Directions are a little unclear, and snapped off a piece inadvertantly before I got the hang of it. Overall, a good unit for the money, and almost everything you need to get started in one box. I'd buy again and/or recommend.

i bought this tank kit from a local petsmart store in february 2012 for $200. got it home, unpacked it and set it up with really no problems at all.

all the hood, filter, and trim parts are plastic. the filter is the bio-wheel penguin 350, which holds a double filter and biowheel setup with adjustable intake. the filter is generally quieter than average for kit systems, and i am very pleased with it so far.

the led lighting comes from two led panels, one on either side of the split-hood. they are removable and come with detachable power cords. they are surprisingly bright, and provide a nice shimmer effect into the tank. however, they do not provide suitable light energy for a planted tank so don't expect to get good plant growth. there is also a night-light setting of a half-dozen blue led's on each panel. the lights do not have a timer option, but instead a 3-way manual switch (white, off, blue) on each panel.

the tank also comes with a generic 200-watt heater and temperature sticker. the heater is not marked in degrees, but that's what the thermometer is for :) they seem to work ok, but i bought a different thermometer to replace the one in the kit. there is also a startup pack that includes a small amount of tropical fish flakes, a net that's far too short to catch bottom-dwelling fish without getting wet up to the elbow, and a small amount of water conditioner. there are no decorations, gravel, air pumps, or other items included.

i am generally satisfied with my purchase. i let the tank cycle for a week before dropping in a couple danios and platies. if i notice any issues with components wearing out early or breaking too easily, i will come back and update this review.

***UPDATE***

after a year, the tank is still holding out very well. nothing has broken or fallen apart, except for the suction cups that were with the heating element. the clips deteriorated and fell apart within a couple months, but i bought some replacements and they've worked just fine. all the led's still work, and the filter is still churning away.

i can definitely say this marineland tank is a keeper.

Pros: Glass aquarium is easier to clean, surface won't scratch like acrylic tanks.

10 gallon tank is long & narrower than bow front, size & shape good for guppies.

Penguin bio wheel filtration system better power, quiet, easier to clean, replace

LED lighting system is better than light bulb in acrylic tanks. Freedom to select from

sliding switch at top for bright white light, blue lights & lights off. Improvement

over push button that easily malfunctioned on the bow front tanks.

With small fish like guppies, there is enough room in tank for bottom gravel &

Cons: Glass tanks are heavier, I purchased a wooden shelf-stand, put stand together myself,

supports 10+ gallon tank.

Problems with water splashing into the LED light hood unit. Penguin filter splashes

some water up into the hood, same with bubble stone. LED unit isn't 100% protected

from water droplets even though there is a thin acylic plate between water surface &

LED light unit. My LED unit was water damaged. Disconnected LED unit, allowed it to

dry out, eventually LED worked again though not as bright. This LED unit is expensive

to replace. Should I have placed an extra layer of protection, like a piece of plastic

wrap between the thin plastic plate & the LED light unit?

Is it possible to open up the LED light unit & clean inside to restore lights to

original brightness? Opening up light unit would probably void the warranty though.

Right now I can't afford to replace the LED light unit for this tank. Instead I have

to keep the water level lower than normal to keep water splashes from getting up to the

acrylic plate. And, sadly, can't enjoy bubble stone due to water splashing into LED

unit. I will attempt to work out these problems myself.

Subtracted the one star from this 10 gallon aquarium due to water splashing up into the hood & potential damages to the LED light unit.

Yes, I would buy this company's glass aquariums again, possibly add another glass tank in future, however, I would find a way to resolve the problem with the LED light unit & hood.

This is a great kit...LED lighting, bio-wheel, heater. I have 1 betta, 2 corycats, and 2 otocinclus residing in this little community. I only had to add a bubbler and of course plants, etc. For the price, it is a great starter tank...or like me...a great tank to place on your sturdy night stand so you can sleep with the sound of water! My fish are very happy!

Jungle TB630W Tank Buddies Fungus Clear, 8-Tablet

We got our first fish -a betta-a couple of weeks ago. When we bought him, there was a tiny black spot on the tip of his tail and, naively, thought it was just part of his natural coloring. Unfortunately, the tiny black spot started spreading. It was fin rot. I read on the internet that frequent water changes were the best treatment, so we changed his water daily but the black kept spreading and his other fins started to look funny, too. After about a week of daily water changes, we purchased this product.

1 tablet is good for 10 gallons. Our tank is only 5 gallons so I broke the tab in half. It broke easily into two equal pieces without any crumbling. I put half into the tank and it fizzed and turned the water a greenish-blue color. The next day, all the black on our betta's tail was completely gone! Three days later, his fins are still not as good as new, but they show obvious signs of healing. He is acting more energetic, eating more, and just doing better all around. I am really amazed at how quickly and how well this product worked and I wish we had used it right away instead of letting him suffer through a week of ineffective water changes.

The box does contain the generic warning that some ingredients have been found to cause cancer in the state of California. I used gloves when breaking the tablet and will be very careful with future water changes.

Today is the third day after use and the water still has a greenish tint. His aquarium has silk plants in various colors and none of them seem to have been dyed. Even though there is an obvious tint, the water is still clear so it doesn't really look dirty or gross.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this product and would definitely recommend it to anyone dealing with fin rot.

Our lab uses these tablets to treat a variety of fish illnesses (dropsy, fungus, etc.). They work! This stuff will stain sand if you just drop the tablet into the tank, so I'd suggest dissolving it in a bucket or beaker before adding it to the treatment tank.

Fish in question: Brachyhypopomus gauderio (scaleless, similar to black ghost and other knife fish)

I'm not sure that this product is still being produced, which is a total shame. I have had two goldfish come down with dropsy at two separate times, and each time I used this medication to CURE THEM. Yes, they are STILL ALIVE even after they both had extremely bloated, pine-coned bodies. I really thought they would not make it, but with the help of this medication (as well as some other special attention), they both were able to pull through. I recently purchased four of these packages each contain 8 tabs (1 tab per 10 gallons) in case they go out of stock. I highly recommend this product.

Keep in mind that it does turn the water a cool (or sickly, depending on who you ask) blue/green color, so its best to take out any decor you may have.

I'd bought Jungle Tank Buddies: Fungus Clear, a couple of months ago "just in case". These things are difficult to find in PetSmart and PetCo, so I decided to buy it from Amazon and stock it.

Just Wednesday, I saw that my large Red Cap Oranda was getting red streaks in his veil finds and he had fin rot. He also had red spots on his body. One of the baby Lionchus had died and had contaminated the water. He was hidden behind one of the large sponge filters. My other goldies in the same 110 gallon fish tank were fine.

I changed 30% of the water and, since this is a big tank and they require that you mix the tablets in a separate bucket before adding to the tank when used in larger tanks, I poured the pre-mixed solution and very blue water in.

The first day, "Spartacus", the red cap oranda, went from floating at the top {head first} to swimming around and even eating a little. The second day was the worst. I thought I'd lost him. He was really sick and was upside at the bottom of the tank, and he didn't eat. The third day, he was on the mend. He was at least upright but still at the bottom of the tank although he did take some food.

Throughout these days, I had noticed that the red streaks were disappearing and today, the fourth day, I'll be doing a 30% water change and Spartacus is A-OKAY! Fungus Clear from Jungle Tank Buddies has saved my fish from almost certain death. I recommend everyone who has goldies to keep these tablets in stock. They will save your fish.

*** UPDATE 04/25/2013 *** ~ Spartacus is 100% back! He's eating and swimming and back to his old self begging for food whenever I pass the tank. No more streaks. Fins are on the mend. And he's happily swimming along. I did have to use a second doze just to be sure. Now I have put a carbon filter in my Rena XP3 filter to remove the medicine together with weekly water changes. I love what this product looks like, the color of the light, and the soothing waterfall. The negatives I have found is that the waterfall pushes my male beta on his side when he swims close to it. Therefore, he hides behinds the filter a lot and I don't see him much. It would be nice if the flow strength of the filter had a switch so the flow strength could be changed like other filters I have owned.

This is one of the rare occasions when I review a project I havent bought. First let me start off by saying you can only put ONE, not TWO glofish in here. Second I find this REALLY expensive. You could by a glass bowl and say 30 bucks. With glofish you will need a heater and filter. That would be a huge hassle. They wont fit and this means more of your money wasted. If you want a glofish tank invest in a good big tank. The ironic thing is bigger tanks are easier to maintain.If you want two glofish you should get a three of four sized gallon tank. I would only get this if you are willing to spoil your betta like most people do.

You have to take care when cleaning the carbon filter as it will break apart if cleaning it with too high of water pressure, use the lowest water pressure that you can use possible to extend the life of the carbon filter.

This little chest works great, however make sure you get or have an air flow valve to cut down the airflow to this. I have a separate bubbler and this chest. The air opening in the chest is large so all of the air comes out of it and keeps the lid open, and no air flowed to my bubbler until I put a small valve to turn the flow down. Now it works like a charm.

I love the idea of the diver going up and down as the treasure chest opens and closes. Unfortunately, the chains attaching the diver to the chest are cheaply made, so the diver came off and I had to sort of rig him so he stays attached to the chest. Due to the rigging, he doesn't go up and down when the chest opens and closes.

I love this fish tank ornament! Great colors and well made. The lid stays open all the time, but it still looks great. The bubbles are a nice feature. Divers hangs perfectly. It's light, so I silicon glued a rock to the bottom of the chest to make sure it stays down. The glue is safe for fish. The rock is covered by gravel, so it's not visible. I purchased this as a $3 or $4 add on item for Prime. I like the container and the price better than Excel. If they came out with a more innovative (maybe squirt type) bottle, I'd guess that they can give Seachem some real competition. How do I know this is the same as Excel? This stuff smells the same and looks the same, so it's an assumption on my part. My plants are really flourishing with Easy Carbo as well. Before you purchase though, make sure you check the price of the larger bottles(500ml, 1000ml) of Easy Carbo.

Waste of money. My tank water was not too bad to begin with, but I thought I would try this with some carbon for the extra polish, instead of buying more Seachem Purigen 250ml (which makes water crystal clear). What a waste of money! From day one this has done nothing to clear my water, in fact it made it worse. It makes my AquaClear power filter stink after a few days (it was not clogged), and after 3 weeks of no results I threw out the filter pad and am not looking back. I have way too much of this stuff left, sitting in the cabinet under my tank, collecting dust. If you can't afford or don't like Purigen, polyester pillow stuffing (a.k.a. "filter floss") works better than this. Would not recommend.

Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE11230 Coral Pro Marine Salt for Aquarium, 175-Gallon

Of all the reef salts i've tried (coralife, reefcrystals and red sea) Red Sea has worked the best. Even tho I only have lps softies and some insist a higher quality salt like red sea's isn't require I have notice my tank do better when using this salt. It is a bit pricier than the other but if you find a good deal from a place like this it ends up being almost the same price as the cheaper ones. I say this because I guess red sea has a higher density which ends up requiring you to use less. To get the salinity I like I typically use a bit more than 5 cups of Red sea per 5 gallons of water whereas the other salt mix's require me to use over 6 cups per 5 gallon of water.

I have not used other salt products as I started with this one. I did research and found the reviews and price on this product to be most desirable. I used it to set up two saltwater tanks. It mixes well and has all the components to sustain a saltwater tank with corals and fish. My corals are growing and fish are all well. SPS and LPS. I add minimal else to the water due to this salt containing most of what is needed. Doing 25% water changes required I have a good product to provide the correct balance of what my corals needed. I am happy with this product and have no complaints

Fluval Chi Cover

After losing several fish to jumping escapes, I was glad to see this product become available. It's a little expensive for a notched piece of plastic that, in my opinion, should've been included with the original tank. That said, it works perfectly and has the added bonus of minimizing splash marks around the outside of the tank and on the desk where I've placed my tank. The cover has pegs in the lower side to keep it in place and the top surface is beveled to encourage splashes from the bubbler to flow back into the tank. It seems to cut down on evaporation as well. I'm happy with my purchase.

I never had a problem with having a fish that attempted to jump out of the tank... but decided to purchase this lid just as a precautionary measure. For $10, I think the price is kind of on the steep side... but it fits on top of the tank perfectly. I wonder why fluval wont include this lid as part of the package? :/

I love my Fluval Chi but as with other Chi owners, my biggest problem with the design is the large amount of water evaporation and of course, suicidal fish jumpers. The cover does help with the fish issue, and since I've installed the cover, I haven't found a fish or ghost shrimp outside the tank. Unfortunately the evaporation is just as rampant as before the cover. I'm sure the cover does help a bit, but it's not really noticeable. What I do notice however, is the fact that these covers get "gunky" really quickly. Water drops will dry on the top, hanging droplets will leave marks on the underside, etc. While the covers are really easy to clean with just a little water and elbow grease, it is a weekly chore if you want to keep them looking nice.

That being said, while I've seen the Chi drop in price as low as the five to six dollar mark (but as high as sixteen!), it still seems pretty overpriced for what it is. If you can get your hands on some cheap polycarbonate or acrylic, it should work just as well if you don't mind a little DIY.

I had some fish that *loved* jumping out of the tank and dying (loaches). That, plus the crabs and snail adventures, prompted me to get this cover. It's really nice, but the only drawback it had no spot for the heater I had installed. That was easily fixed by cutting a small opening with my dremel, though ;)

Bonus: No more roommates shouting, "DAVE THERE IS A CRAB IN THE HALLWAY" at 7 am.

First off, the lid itself is cheap and flimsy. one of the pegs to hold the lid in place broke off rather easily.

And lastly this lid has not prevented 2 Betta fish from jumping to their deaths. It leaves large gaps and does not work.

Impeller works wonderfully. I bought a new one because mine busted (obviously) and I figured it would work but I had no idea that the impeller was making my filter so noisy in the first place. Now it's whisper quiet, so I say if you can hear anything besides the water entering the canister and the bubbles from the air pump, you probably need a new impeller.

Very difficult to snap magnet onto impeller shaft as directed in instructions. I was actually unable to snap the two pieces in place. Otherwise great product but hard to put together properly.

Hagen Nutrafin Max Spirulina Tablets, 3.88-Ounce

After only one feeding in two different tanks, I'm very impressed so far.

I fed 1/4 tablet to 10 Crystal Red Shrimp and they went absolutely crazy! They were darting around the tank and seemed to be fighting over it. I've had them for about a month and feed them a varied diet consisting mostly of Fluval Shrimp Granules and Hikari Crab Cuisine, but also TetraMin Flakes, and Wardley Spirulina Discs. I have never seen them react so positively to any of these foods. The pond snails in the tank were all over it as well.

I fed a 1/2 tablet to 7 Ottos (Otocinclus affinis) in another tank with similar results. Ottos are usually somewhat shy but after a few minutes they must have sensed the dissolving tablet as they also became extremely active. I've never seen them so determined to find food before. The above mentioned Wardley Spirulina Disks provoke very little reaction when compared to the Nutrafin Max. The pond snails in this tank seemed to love it as well.

Pros:

~ My picky shrimp and Ottos love them

~ 30% spirulina content (1st ingredient on the label)

~ Value! nearly a 1/4lb for about $7.

~ Contains garlic and plenty of vitamins/minerals

~ 100% vegetable formula with no animal protein/fat

~ No artificial colors

Cons:

~ The expiration date is 12/2012, only 7 months from now. But this could be due to Amazon having old stock.

~ Messy, they fall apart rapidly with any current don't overfeed, turn off your filter and air pumps if possible.

~ I couldn't get the 1/2 tablet to stick to the aquarium glass as advertised. It just crumbled.

Generally speaking, I've been quite impressed with Hagen products and this is no exception!

I have tropical fish that absolutely love these Spirulina tabs. My fish are Tropheus and require a vegetarian diet and these tabs make for a nice healthy treat every once in a while.

Eshopps AEO19005 U-Tubes for Aquarium Water Pump, 1-1/4-Inch

I purchased this item to add added water flow to my overflow. I wanted to add a larger pump into my sump that would help cycle more water.

The U-Tube does not have venting tube to remove the access air and prime the system. So you have to use a rubber hose to accomplish this. I had a other u-tube that had a notch on the top and a tub sticking out of it that made it easy to prime and clear it.

I thought I would be crafty and make this hole my self and add a silicon tube on my own. Well the U-Tube cracked and now it's a big mess, I covered it with silicon and got it working.

Other than that it did work. If you do cut a hole don't use a drill that doesn't have a speed control, and turn your cell phone off too.

the light works well if you keep it within 2 or 3 inches of the plant. Place it right abouve soil for sprouts, and keep raising it as they grow. Eventually, if you have a decent sized garden, you will want HydroFarm FLT48 Commercial System Grow Light Fixture but these are good to get it going.
