Marineland Pillar Aquarium Kit, 6-Gallon
First and foremost, the shape of the tank gives a funhouse mirror effect to viewing the fish. It's really unpleasant and frustrating if you actually want to be able to see your fish undistorted. That's not the product's fault, though, that happens with any cylindrical tank.
The tank is acrylic which isn't necessarily a negative, but it's extruded acrylic which is not scratch resistant whatsoever. I was slowly lowering a plastic log decoration into the tank, and it gently touched the side. Scratched forever.
There is no lip on the tank. The top, as pictured, is not attached, and you cannot fill up to the top of it without having water spill out. In fact, you can't even fill up the tank to the top of just the acrylic, because water movement will cause water to spill out as will turning off the filter and having the extra water in the filter empty into the tank. This means a relatively constant splashing noise, as the water level needs to be lower than the filter's output.
Speaking of the lid, the lid is where the LED lights are, and is not disconnectable from the rest of the setup. There are wires with almost no slack that run to it, which means you cannot take the top off the tank and set it down. You have to rest it precariously on top of the filter (the wires are too short to lay it flat) if you want to put any decorations in, as the clear plastic flap on top is prohibitively small.
In fact, the filter and lights are all wired together, so you cannot replace the built-in filter. In fact, even if it wasn't all wired together, you couldn't replace it because it is literally built into the back of the tank. Also, want to put in a heater, a bubbler, or anything that involved wires or tubes going into the tank? Bad news, there are ZERO areas through which to route such cables. Cleaning and maintaining this tank is made exceptionally difficult by these design choices.
Now, on a more positive note, the filtration and lighting are fantastic. The built-in filtration is a marineland penguin 100, so, if you're going to be forever stuck with a filter for a small tank, that's not a bad one to be stuck with. It kept the tank crystal clear and healthy. Also, the blue "night" lighting feature is gorgeous with the right decorations and fish.
My basic impression of this tank is that they cut too many corners to make the tank look streamlined and to keep the material cost down. I wouldn't recommend this tank for anything other than a hospital or planted tank. Plants do look very good in it.I had this tank for 6 months. The lights over heated and melted the top of the tank. Could not get the smell of burnt plastic out of it so I had to get a new tanks. It killed 2 of my fish. Called customer service and all they would do was send me a new lid with lights to replace the melted one IF i sent them my melted one. Which is pointless since the entire tank is no good. Customer service is will not help you and the tank has electrical issues. do NOT buy this tanks!!!!

I've been a aquarium owner for more than 40 years. Just moved into a small apartment and decided to get a small one for a small stand I had. Big mistake. I've never seen something so cheaply made, not even a real filter. The so called acrylic is cheep plastic. This product is a total ripoff. I wished I would read more reviews before I bought this. I haven't even put water in it and I can tell you It wont last a month. Petsolutions should be ashamed to sell crap like this. Even if I replace the the $10.00 filter then the LED lights wont work because they are wired into the filter pump, all on one circuit, so if you upgrade the filter the LED lights won't work. Enough said, don't waste your money.Read Best Reviews of Marineland Pillar Aquarium Kit, 6-Gallon Here
After dealing with the headache of a Fluval hipster tank with all proprietary pumps and filters I wanted a tank that still had style but also had more common filtration elements. The Pillar is perfect in both those regards. First to address the complaint you can't add heaters or aerators, if you have a simple drill and a 3/8" bit you can remedy that problem easily. Cleaning the filter is about 1000 times easier than any Fluval I have had, in that you swap out the charcoal filter like a tea bag, pop off the intake tube, flush it and you are all set. The bio wheel sounded cheesy to me at first, but it seems to be doing a great job balancing the tank nice and clear. With reviews all over the place I was weary to go with the Pillar but I'm glad I did. I would just recommend you verify the pump works before going through the whole set up. I did that because of the guy who bought it for his sister, and sure enough the pump I got seemed weak and couldn't make the biowheel spin. I took it back and the wrong AC adapter (18W) was included when it should have been a 30w. Minor for such a sleek and affordable tank. Anybody with a shred of aquarium experience will find this tank to be a breeze to setup and maintain. This is a vey good tank and looks great setup. These other reviewers that say you can't change anything on this are crazy. I cut one wire to pump wired it to lights and bam works perfect now I can put any filter I want. People there is plenty of room for heater and whatever you want to add. Anyone with any common sense at all can modify this easily and make it how ever they want it. So yea maybe out of the box might not be the best setup but can be made however you want it with any brains at all. Just my two cents!!Tuesday, August 19, 2014

AQUARIUM PRODUCTS QUICK-CURE 3/4 OZ
Cons:
The green food coloring type additive in the medicine will stain whatever it touches. It is my assumption coloring is added to the medicine so you can see how much you are putting in, but it is possible it is the natural color. Either way it stains your fingers, and certain things in the tank. My air hose leading to the air diffusers are what are the most obviously stained. But it is not severe, and nothing in the tank is so stained that I will even worry about taking it out. It also stained the silicone around the edges where the corners are sealed. If you have an expensive tank set up with high end ornaments, you might want to take to take the time to empty the tank or seperate the fish into a smaller container. The directions say to add this to a "bare tank", I did not take the time to empty the tank. The rocks and ornaments I have are fine afterward, just the above mentioned green tint in a few places.
Don't let the dark green coloring deter you from adding the proper amount of medicine to the tank. As you start dropping it in, it appears quite menacing, to the point that you are afraid it will harm your fish. BUT, it wasn't until I got past that fear and dropped 40 drops in a 40 gallon tank that my fish began to show signs of getting better.
Pros:
The effects were fast. Within hours of adding it I noticed the larger white bumps emmitting air bubbles. I could actually see the parasite being killed, and air emmitting from multiple spots on the fish's infection. Within 2 hours of seeing that the fish's disposition had improved dramatically.
The medicine reversed the disease in my one fish tht was infected and I saw no other infections among other fish.
Directions:
Remove carbon filter, add one drop per gallon daily until cured for all fish except Tetra. For Tetras add one drop per 2 gallons. Replace carbon filter 24 hours after final use. Do not use on invertebratess, live rock, baby whales, or elephant nose.My betta (Splash) is feeling and looking so much better. Quick-Cure worked quickly to cure his severe case of "Popeye". His eye appears to have returned to it's normal size. Thank you!

I have a 75 gallons tank and wanted to give it better oxygenation, so I started looking for an aerator. I had to think a lot before deciding which size to get, and in the end I bought the 3" one. As others said, it produces an enormous amount of bubbles for its size, and it's perfect for my vertical aquarium, so considering its power, you might as well consider that the size is utterly important, depending on the size of your tank; I believe the 3" will work great for 100-gallons-and-less aquariums. The only disadvantage is that it needs some weight to stay down, I had to tie it to the bottom. Besides that, it's perfect, and having it for a week with 6 ten-inches goldfishes who usually make a mess everywhere, it was pretty much clean.

This little airstone 5" is wonderful for my koi ponds and smaller 90 gallon aquariums. I use drilled slate disk from the fish store to anchor the air stone any place I want, they are cheap, and sold for anchoring plants. I just run the airline through the hole and drop the airstone any place I want in either ponds or tanks, and believe me without the slate disk, these airstones would be moved around by my koi. Thanks for carrying a great product!Want Deluxe Bubble Disk® Aerating Aquarium Ornaments Discount?
I put these into 1 gallon bubble buckets and they performed GREAT!Lots of bubbles! They do not have weights though, so they float around a lot. No biggie for farmers but fish people might not like it.

Fluval Ceramic Shrimp Decor Aquarium Ornament
Because the caves have an open bottom, you can push them into the substrate as far as you want to make the caves larger or smaller. This allows cave dwellers to arrange the substrate inside the cave the way they want which is a normal part of the breeding process. For my kribensis, I like to push them almost all the way down so that just a tiny hole is left open. The female krib will pick the cave and then rearrange the gravel to make the opening just perfect for her. This gives her a sense of safety so she will breed and care for the eggs and fry.
I've been looking for a dark colored cave that looked attractive in my planted tanks for a long time, and this cave is perfect. I started out with 3 caves and just bought 3 more. No more ugly clay pots! They look great in the tank and don't detract from the beautiful colors of the fish.
UPDATE: My Pelvicachromis clearly love these caves! One pair mated and have successfully raised the fry. They're about 3/4" long now. The other pair have had two sets of fry, but aren't as good at parenting so they've lost both sets. However, they're trying for their third set of fry so maybe they'll do better at protecting them as they gain experience.
Even though I still have other caves in the tanks for my Pelvicachromis fish to use, they most definitely prefer these caves. I'm not going to bother buying any other kind of cave from now on. These caves are a definite winner! Just bought 5 more for a 90g tank I'm converting over to a planted tank! I'll probably get even more for that tank over time.I bought the log. And... it's okay. I think that it's ugly and that the interior of the log should be textured instead of smooth. I thought this was supposed to be shrimp decor. It's as good as any other aquarium ornament out there. My giant blob of java moss has consumed it so at least I can't see it. I hope my shrimp like it because it was expensive.
Nothin' special here.

I have this in my 5 gallon aquarium and it works perfectly; highly recommend it!Want Penn Plax Floating Aquarium Thermometer Discount?
I purchased one of these to try with my strip temperature gauges on my 90 gallon saltwater reef system. Thankfully it was a cheap mistake. The thermometer doesn't like to stick to the glass (which I cleaned very carefully to make sure there were no lingering algae deposits) and is easily knocked off by invertebrates and other creatures in your tank. Then you have to fish it out and stick it back up on the glass again.
It reads poorly compared to most strips; I compared it with them side by side to see if one was easier to read than the other. It also reads slower than strip thermometers (I tested it in an empty quarantine tank by raising the internal water temperature and the outside temperature strip registered the change faster).
I left it in the quarantine tank with normal reef salinity and gravity for a week and found it clouded. This is concerning if you are keeping coral as it could be leaking or subject to breaking in the tank. Not to be dissuaded that it might be one bad thermometer I purchased another and it suffered the same fate within the same time frame (it lasted a whole day longer).
I'm giving this a two star review because it may work in fresh water and be effective there but I wouldn't suggest it for a saltwater system. If you don't like thermometer strips you might as well spend the money on an expensive electronic reader that will also run a few of your tests for you.

Finnex Digital Temperature Control Glass Heater, 300-Watt
The cord is round and flexible un-like a lot of submersible cords but it's only 5-6ft long. Since my plug is directly behind the tank, this is just perfect and still leaves a nice safety loop hang for me. The heater itself is about 15 or 16 inches long (I put a ruler on the outside of the tank an made an estimate) and the bottom is covered with a rubber cage, which again was fortunate since I had no gravel and the suction cups eventually lost their hold... or I may not have bothered w/ them too much b/c I just put the heater in a vertical position to begin with. Knowing how I am, I probably read EVERY single word on the directions...twice, and followed instructions precisely on how to set it up. When I first set it up during our unusually warm winter, I would notice the LCD temp. reading drop to 75 and shortly after I would see the orange light come on telling me it was heating, and back to my set temp. of 76 it would go, in other words, it worked perfectly! It's mid Sept. now, my poor fish are still living in the 46g b/c I have not had the time to build the rock wall for my other tank yet, but honestly, I don't think I have seen the temp. reading change from 76 degrees since this spring. I've double checked the temp. with a reliable digital thermometer throughout the year and they both read 76 degrees. Really the only con so far has been the suction cups, including the one on the probe, certainly not a deal breaker. Hopefully it will continue to do well this winter and maybe I'll be able to move it to the 75g and report back. I have 3 other tanks that could use a new heater since all of them heat the the water to 80 or so degrees even though the dial is as low as it can go, 3 different brands too.
UPDATE: Feb. 2013, the heater is no longer heating, just a giant thermometer now. I've never had a heater stop heating, usually they start over heating and cook the fish so even though it no longer works, at least it didn't kill my fish. The visible thermometer let me know the water was too cold & something wasn't right. I've bought some pretty cheap heaters in the past but they all lasted longer than a year. It seemed like a really well built heater but just didn't last unfortunately. I got a Fluval E around the same time for a different tank and that's been doing great so far so may try that one again.I actually liked the overall design of this heater and the fact that it had the LED display on the unit itself. So, I went ahead and purchased it. It took less than 3 weeks for it to fail miserably. It switched on to heat mode and never shut off! Tried unplugging it, dialing down the temperature, and even letting it sit for a while, all to no avail. I have a pretty hefty investment in my tank and I got lucky in that I was able to catch the problem before it killed all of my fish. Don't want a replacement for it. Not interested in trading junk for junk. Pulled it out and bought a Fluval. Will try to get my money back. If you are reading this, think hard and long before wasting your money and jeopardizing your investment on this "product". Lesson learned here... READ THE REVIEWS before you invest your hard earned money!

I initially loved this heater because of the LEDs & being able to know the temp from across the room, so much that I bought 3 over a 2 month period. Now I'm severely regretting it because the LED readout is going out on the oldest one. It is set for 84 degrees (discus tank) and reads as if it was set for 6u.I will not buy another Finnex product & refuse to pay the shipping for a replacement that may start going out in 3 months too. I just bought 3 Eheim Jager heaters to replace them & will buy a separate LED thermometer to use in unison with the "classic" glass thermometer I have in each tank.

Heater looks great, nice digital display. Heated my 48 degree water yo 75 in one day. Next day it was 81 and the display was out. Thinking it might have to reset I unplugged it and tried again the next day. The display did not come on when I hit the thermostat button. Instead there were sparks and arcs inside the glass tube and then it exploded. The glass cracked and my house filled with acrid smoke and ozone. Could be just a fluke and I would have tried another one but that wasn't an option, credit my card only.Monday, December 16, 2013
Mammoth Flossy Chews Cottonblend Color 3-Knot Rope Tug
Was the first toy we picked up for our dog in addition to a plush and some squeaky balls. The plush was in the garbage in less than a week, the balls have been lost / punctured. I used this herbal medication to treat marine ich in my reef tank about a month ago. My clownfish stopped "flashing" against rocks. I assumed it worked but brain coral (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi) died and slowly turned to white. I lost $44.99 (the price of the brain coral).Recently I have a marine ich crisis, maybe after the introduction of tomini tang. I used the herbal medication with higher dose allowed by the instructions (6 teaspoonful, instead of 4, for 40 gallon tank) for about a week. Fairy wrasse was full of white ich, also scissortail goby. Now other tank mates were effected.
I decided to stop this herbal treatment after:
(1) I did not see any improvement with the fish
(2) Plate coral (Cycloseris hexagonalis) stopped responding with its favorite food
(3) Gorgonian coral (Eunicea sp) stopped extending its tentacles.
However, birdnest coral, acropora, maxima clam, Duncan coral (Duncanopsammia axifuga) were okay.
I want to try copper treatment on separate tank, or hypo salinity treatment. I think herbal treatment cannot stop marine ich crisis.
Every tank is different. You can try this product and see the result.

My fish have been fighting ich for over a month now and hasn't improved. I finally set up a q.t. tank and am going to have to leave them from my tank for 60 days. This stuff didn't bother my soft corals at all, not even my flowerpot coral. Maybe if you catch at the very first sight this might work, but it was a waste of my time and money.Wednesday, October 16, 2013
Penn Plax Medium Rialto Bridge From Penn Plax Fish Tank Ornament
The detail is lovely. The color is a dark great. I was hoping for more of a fairytale appearance, but I would say it's more gothic/industrial. I don't think it was intended to look that way, but to me it does. For the price I think it's a bit expensive and there are other better ornaments available. Size-wise it's great. The detail is beautiful. My fish really love it (and that's all that matters right?). It has an open feel yet also gives fish a place to feel they are hiding and safe. It's shadowey, yet kids can still look in and find fish if they look hard enough. Overall, a great peice. The picture doesn't really show the gothic sort of appearance, which came as a surprise to me when I recieved it. On the other hand, it would make a great addition to any fish-tank that is going for that style. I've actually grown quite fond of it. And all of the kids that are in and out of my livingroom stop to appreciate it. The boys think it's pretty cool. And my fish, well they seem pretty happy exploring it up and down and all around.

Tetra GloFish Aquarium Kit
The only Con i have is there is a bit of patterning on the side of the tank, almost like a rubbing, but it is only noticeable when you look really close, and once filled with water you cannot see it at all.
My only note is do not be deceived by the pictures, a 1.5 gallon tank is just big enough for one betta but not much else will fit in here. The advice is one inch of fish for one gallon of water. Also goldfish need about 10 gallons per fish.I just got this tank having looked all over for the "right" basic betta tank. This one won. I like the tank as it is easy to see the betta with the bow front. The lid is extremely basic and has cut outs for feeding, heater and filter which is nice. The light is fun though I wish it had an an option for white day light rather than just the (24watt)blue glow light. It has lots of floor space for decorations. The filter is a Tetra Whisper internal filter which takes the regular whisper filters.
all in all a good product.

TWO ITEMS ARE SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS! Either one can be found cheaper! One has a drawer the other does not.I bought this at walmart, probably for a little less. I haven't had problems sometimes people complain about the blue LEDs dying out mine are fine but it probably could be closer to the center of the tank, it is a little loose when putting it all the way up. It is not a big aquarium and actually in truth it is too small for pretty much any fish but it has served me well until I decide to upgrade to a larger tank for glofish, probably a good tank for a desk or student. Filter also kind of small, doesn't create any degree of water flow really but I suppose it works well enough. There is a little storage bin in the bottom of mine and the one shown but there are some without, its a near idea but kind of too small to store much, I just use it at the moment to store small, extra glow in the dark decorations. If you want all of your fish to die I highly recommend this tank. Every day you will wake up to another glowing casualty. The air filter of death will suck the larger fish underneath it and they can't escape. If they do escape they are paralyzed and flip around twitching and suffering until their inevitable death. The smaller glofish get sucked up behind the filter where they are trapped and smashed. If you try to save them they will be crushed when you remove the filter. It's quite the massacre.
