I bought my filter system last year, and loved the filter pads that came with it. They have stood up well to frequent cleaning. I wanted a backup set and didn't want my original ones to give out if I didn't have another set on hand.

I would not purchase them again. They are not the same quality as the original ones that came with the filter itself.

They are very soft in comparison, and when I remove them to clean them, they have a caved in look on the sides.

Not the quality I expected, and I'm not expecting them to last the Summer at all.

These 4 compact foam rings had me wide eyed when I opened the filter for a spring clean-up. Over the winter, I ran this filter without the waterfall. My fish remained healthy. The foam kit was loaded with gunk due to being unattended for months. The water flow continued full force despite my neglect. After a thorough cleaning, I reused them until I decided to re-order. I unplugged the pond heater, and turned the UV light back on. In 3 days, my algae was gone and the water was, and still is, clear as glass. This system gives me big results with little effort. I am finally done searching for the right pond filter.

I paid $27.61 for this stand from amazon.com brand new. It is the Executive Wooden Stand from Reef One (biOrb) that retails from $85 to $99. I am giving it 3 stars mainly for the low price offered by amazon.com. For that price ($27.61) it is a great little stand. But if you pay anything over $30 for this stand, you are getting ripped off.

There's not much to the stand at all. There are no compartments for you to put any supplies in. The stand feels cheaply made. However, putting it together took minutes and was easy despite lack of good intructions.

Overall, I am pleased at getting it for such a low price. I didn't want to spend alot on a stand because starting a new aquarium can be pricey and for me, the stand was low on the list of important things I needed. I would not recommend this stand for anything less than $30. You're better off buying a nice wooden stand for under $99 that you can actually put supplies and all in and would probably be a bit more sturdier.

I like the effectiveness of this product. This is my third one of the same model.I have a 125 gal. tank and two of these running at the same time do a good job. I have had great luck as far as noise goes with one of my original puchases.(operates very quietly) The other unit I have, I have tried to get it to run quieter over several years, with readily availble parts and cooperation from the Marineland customer service folks. I finally gave up and puchased an enire replacement unit and once installed and running, I still have the same issue. I have replaced the inpeller and the part that the impellar goes in, both provided at no cost by Marineland customer service, no questions asked. The unit still makes a rattling sound.(very annoying in my living room) I will be contacting customer service for additional advice today and hope we will be able to get the noise issue solved. The other unit that runs quietly has been in service for 5 plus years without any problems.

The Filter works just fine. its doing a great job on my 75 gallon tank, but wow its loud. The room it is in has a tile floor but I can hear the product throughout the condo... For me this drops a star as I like to hear the water flowing around the tank, not the filter pumping water.

I decided to wait some time before posting to see how things went with this product. I first cleaned then installed the Marineland Emperor Bio-Wheel 400 Power Filter, much the same as any other filter would be installed. I can say I have some experience even with filters exactly the same as the Marineland Emperor Bio-Wheel filter, as I own a 10-gal aquarium with a Marineland Penguin filter, and this was to replace an old (7 yr old) Penguin 330.

The filter is NOISY. Freakishly noisy; like something that filters a 5000 gallon aquarium noisy. I wish I could say it was just a lone bad unit, but after ordering the unit, I researched a little to find these things have a tendency to be noisy. Seriously, do yourself a favor, and google "noisy emperor 400", see the hundreds of other complaints? Yes, some may get good units, but there's a good chance you won't. I even let the thing run for several days before judging, since others said it may need to "break in" (which, yes the one on my 10 gal did get quieter, and now is whisper quiet). After 3 days, I contacted Marineland, which, while not the friendliest of folks, were fairly helpful. The first time around, they sent a new impeller, even though I had thoroughly inspected the impeller and found no mechanical flaws, I figured couldn't hurt to try. New one arrived, didn't help any. Let it run for a few days, no improvement. Then, I contacted them again, they sent an entire new filter! Pretty good service I have to say, but sadly, the new one suffers the same obnoxious "garbage disposal"-like sound. Yes, I've messed with a billion different ways to seat the impeller, and well quite frankly, if someone who's worked with dozens of filters in the past can't properly seat the impeller, it really isn't consumer-ready.

Beyond that, the filter has a ton of great features. The spray-bars that keep the bio-wheel's wet and spinning work great. The filter has tons of room for flow, plus a total of 4 slots for filter media, and includes two easy-to-fill filter cartridges. The flow-rate is good. It really would be an excellent, solid product if it weren't made with cheap materials, and weren't the noisiest filter I've ever owned. The other negative is the bio-wheel filters really create a lot of choppy surface water, so feeding fish is messy, and I recommend getting some sort of floating-feeding device.

It's past the return period, which Marineland was perhaps counting on, so now I"m stuck with it. I'll try contacting them again and see what happens, and will post if anything different comes from it. It seems you either love it and get a great unit, or you get a flawed, noisy as all heck filter. The price is excellent, but to be honest, you're better off with a Penguin, which yes while the Emperor's are supposed to be the higher-end product, very few have issues with the Penguin's compared to the Emperor's. Or an Aqua-Clear, but you have to be gentle with them (they have a tendency to crack/break).

***Update 9/12/2011***

Well, after approximately 3-4 months of continuous use, the filter is now significantly quieter then when I received either one of them. Still not "whisper" quiet, but sounds decent enough for a larger filter. I've added a star, since this is a decent product overall, but the fact that it took that many months of having to have my office door completely closed at night just so we don't hear it, I can't give it any higher than that. YMMV.

i have a 55 gal tank. i used to use the magnum power filter but it got clogged all the time and the tank was always dirty. the marineland 400 is amazing. clean, clear water and very quiet.

i read the reviews before buying this filter. i had mixed emotions about the emperor 400, but i ended up purchasing 2 filters anyway. when i recieved my filters i noticed that the box say's that the impeller is preinstalled. being the person i am, i took everything apart and discovered that the impeller was not properly installed in the (flow manifold housing). after i reinstalled it, put it back together, and filled it with water and plugged it in, i had no problems at all. i hope this helps. buy the way, i had this problem with both filters.

If your aquarium light fixture has a standard base and use the 6" 8" incandescent bulbs, you can probably use either these 20W or the 10W bulbs, depending on the wattage rating of the fixture. For example, my lighting hood is rated for two 25W bulbs, so I am using two of these 20W bulbs. Using incandescent bulbs doesn't produce enough light energy for a decent, small (10-20 gallon), freshwater planted aquarium. This 20W has the lumination of a 100W incandescent bulb and the 10W is as bright as a 50W incandescent. They are also cooler than the incandescent bulbs. These make your aquarium brighter and it's no longer YELLOW! You may get an increase in algae growth, due to the light increase, but adding plants and/or other measures will fix that. These definitely beat paying a ton of money for a new fluorescent fixture and the light is effective for freshwater plants and fish. Worth every penny!

A few years back I purchased a Fluval CO2 88 gram system

on sale. The entire setup was only about $36 (it usually retails for twice that).

I really liked how convenient it was, and it did a great job enhancing the growth of my plants.

However, the replacement cartridges can range from about $12 each in a three pack ($36 total) to more than $20 a piece. I used to get about a month out of single CO2 88 cartridge when using 3 bubbles per second and turning this CO2 system off at night.

So when I began setting up additional aquariums this system became impractical.

I decided to purchase a larger pressurized CO2 system which I used on one of my aquariums for about a year, while attempting to find a DIY CO2 system that actually worked well in daily use, and at an affordable price.

I tried several combinations and finally found that the quality of the yeast can make the difference between a few days of CO2 production to several weeks.

I now use SAF instant yeast exclusively, since it is far superior to the store bought packets of yeast which can cost as much as $3.50 an ounce. I pay about .23 an ounce for the SAF yeast.

The recipe I am using presently gives about three weeks of consistent CO2 production before the bubble count begins to decrease significantly.

Two cups of granulated sugar mixed with one teaspoon of SAF instant yeast, in a 2 liter bottle filled 3/4's of the way with warm water, is the best concoction that I have used to this point.

I have used the same recipe with Fleishmann's yeast, yet only got a week out of it before the bubble count dropped significantly.

When my plants pearl oxygen bubbles I know that the water column has been saturated with oxygen, and my DIY CO2 system is working optimally. When the plants stop pearling O2 bubbles, that is when I know it's time to recharge the CO2 generator.

I purchase the sugar and yeast in bulk and for four planted aquariums the annual cost is about $50. This as opposed to between $450 and $1000 a year for four Fluval CO2 88 canisters each month.

I have seen these canisters selling for as little as $12 each to as much as $21 each. This, like the many different mini C02 systems from companies such as ADA, ISTA and GLA, are convenient to use but very expensive in relation to a larger pressurized system, which utilizes a CO2 tank ranging in size from about 5 to 20 Lbs.

If you only have one planted tank it's not that much of an issue. However, if you're using injected CO2 on several aquariums, a well setup DIY system can save you a small fortune each year.

There's also the safety issue to consider.

DIY CO2 is by the fermentation process, so it's safe to use in your home, as opposed to using a pressurized CO2 tank which could leak or even explode.

Each tank last about 1 month. The dial is easy to use on the regulator. One day I want a automatic co2 but this does the job for now. Quick shipping, not the best packaging. Everything arrived in good condition though. I use these cartridges for my 36G planted tank (with the bubble counter and diffuser also supplied by Fluval) and it does a great job. The bubbles come out super tiny, I run my cartridges for about 12 hours a day and they last me a couple of months each.

This is great sand for burrowing creatures, I was able to put this right into my water because it's in a new tank. This sand is very find, it's almost like silt or clay, so it's very messy at first. When you first add it, be careful of it clogging your filters, fans, and power heads. It will also take a couple days to settle. Once it does you'll need to clean your glass, but be careful not to stir up too much sand.

This item is listed as a 20 lb 2 pack, but it is not. You just get 20 lbs for the price. The sand itself is a great white color, with very fine smooth particles. VERY FINE. Seems like it would be great for sand sifters and things like that. It does say there are live bacteria in it, but I can't speak to that since I put the sand in my upgraded tank with my pre-cycled live rock.

I didn't get this on Amazon but that other site. Been using submersible heaters over 20 years. It is a great looking item. Looks like a top quality item. That's where the good news ends. The first one of these I got exploded in the tank after about 3 minutes. Glad I was near by to run and unplug it as it sissled. Had to clean glass from the tank. Seller sent free replacement. The replacement will not come on at any temperature or any setting. At least it didn't blow up. Seller refunded in full and said they would check their stock..Hope they do cuz I'm just glad no fish or people were injured by this.

I'm a cricket farmer and have been looking for something to water my 3-week old and smaller crickets, because they can drown so easily even with an over-wet sponge. Having to carefully rehydrate sponges atleast once a day or giving them expensive potato slices is both a hassle and time consuming, and so I thought I found the answer to my prayers with the "Water Pillow". "I was wrong", these things swell up so much that the edges lift high enough off the ground that pinheads all the way up to 1/4" crickets can't climb up and reach the water. The smooth platic bottom also makes it impossible for them to get any traction to climb.

I think they would work great for larger crickets but when you have thousands of crickets in each container like I do, these "Cricket Pillows" wouldn't last a day. For crickets 3 weeks old and bigger, I use reptile waterers with a sponge in the bowl that works perfectly and will last nearly a week before having to refill.

I do like the "Cricket Pillow" concept but the design is poor. If they could make them with a flat rigid bottom so all 4 edges stay on the ground, than they could be a winner.

Put the pillows water-side down and any sized cricket can climb up on them and drink. I live in a very dry part of the country, so the pillows are very helpful to keep the liquid from evaporating. I've had mine in use for almost a year, and they are just like new.

I got mine earlier today from the clearance isle, they were just 40 cents so I decided to get them. When I put them in the sink with the water running so I could fill up the sink with water to soak them in I was surprised how much water the absorbed. I used three of them for my crickets, and a few of them decided to stay on top of them. (These cricket are the largest ones you can get)As I looked closely I could see their mouthparts moving so I guess they were drinking. Once these dry out I will conduct an experiment to see how much water a pillow will hold and how long it will take for them to dry out. Overall I really like these pillows. And my crickets are in my taranutla's cage so I hope the crickets will last longer so I won't have to buy crickets only for them to die after a few days. (I buy crickets every week and they go straight to my tarantulas tank.

If you've never used a water pillow for your insects, this is a great way to go. Reuseable several times. But it does get pretty gross with crickets, and they do tend to lay eggs in it as well as poop around it. But for roaches it's fantastic. They don't dirty the pillows at all.

I got this heater around Jan. 20th 2012 and put it in a 46g bow front tank. The tank sits within 7ft of the house thermostat and I like to keep our house temp about 66-68 degrees in the winter and 72 to 74 degrees in the summer, I live in Virginia and I like it cold. The 300 watt is probably over-kill but I intended to move my fish to a 75g, so I never even put substrate in or much in the way of decorations. There is also an airstone in front of the heater so it gets completely un-impeded water flow. The water level sits about 3-4 inches above the fully submersed heater.

The cord is round and flexible un-like a lot of submersible cords but it's only 5-6ft long. Since my plug is directly behind the tank, this is just perfect and still leaves a nice safety loop hang for me. The heater itself is about 15 or 16 inches long (I put a ruler on the outside of the tank an made an estimate) and the bottom is covered with a rubber cage, which again was fortunate since I had no gravel and the suction cups eventually lost their hold... or I may not have bothered w/ them too much b/c I just put the heater in a vertical position to begin with. Knowing how I am, I probably read EVERY single word on the directions...twice, and followed instructions precisely on how to set it up. When I first set it up during our unusually warm winter, I would notice the LCD temp. reading drop to 75 and shortly after I would see the orange light come on telling me it was heating, and back to my set temp. of 76 it would go, in other words, it worked perfectly! It's mid Sept. now, my poor fish are still living in the 46g b/c I have not had the time to build the rock wall for my other tank yet, but honestly, I don't think I have seen the temp. reading change from 76 degrees since this spring. I've double checked the temp. with a reliable digital thermometer throughout the year and they both read 76 degrees. Really the only con so far has been the suction cups, including the one on the probe, certainly not a deal breaker. Hopefully it will continue to do well this winter and maybe I'll be able to move it to the 75g and report back. I have 3 other tanks that could use a new heater since all of them heat the the water to 80 or so degrees even though the dial is as low as it can go, 3 different brands too.

UPDATE: Feb. 2013, the heater is no longer heating, just a giant thermometer now. I've never had a heater stop heating, usually they start over heating and cook the fish so even though it no longer works, at least it didn't kill my fish. The visible thermometer let me know the water was too cold & something wasn't right. I've bought some pretty cheap heaters in the past but they all lasted longer than a year. It seemed like a really well built heater but just didn't last unfortunately. I got a Fluval E around the same time for a different tank and that's been doing great so far so may try that one again.

I actually liked the overall design of this heater and the fact that it had the LED display on the unit itself. So, I went ahead and purchased it. It took less than 3 weeks for it to fail miserably. It switched on to heat mode and never shut off! Tried unplugging it, dialing down the temperature, and even letting it sit for a while, all to no avail. I have a pretty hefty investment in my tank and I got lucky in that I was able to catch the problem before it killed all of my fish. Don't want a replacement for it. Not interested in trading junk for junk. Pulled it out and bought a Fluval. Will try to get my money back. If you are reading this, think hard and long before wasting your money and jeopardizing your investment on this "product". Lesson learned here... READ THE REVIEWS before you invest your hard earned money!

Now I'm severely regretting it because the LED readout is going out on the oldest one. It is set for 84 degrees (discus tank) and reads as if it was set for 6u.

I will not buy another Finnex product & refuse to pay the shipping for a replacement that may start going out in 3 months too. I just bought 3 Eheim Jager heaters to replace them & will buy a separate LED thermometer to use in unison with the "classic" glass thermometer I have in each tank.

I just bought this heater and no matter what we try, it resets to 83. I emailed the company and they were not helpful at all. This is a poor product with poor customer service.

Heater looks great, nice digital display. Heated my 48 degree water yo 75 in one day. Next day it was 81 and the display was out. Thinking it might have to reset I unplugged it and tried again the next day. The display did not come on when I hit the thermostat button. Instead there were sparks and arcs inside the glass tube and then it exploded. The glass cracked and my house filled with acrid smoke and ozone. Could be just a fluke and I would have tried another one but that wasn't an option, credit my card only.

I bought these for my son's gerbils because they were chewing up their cage: their wheel, igloo, etc. These are quite hard and they don't really chew on them. They've nibbled the ends of 1 stick a bit, but that is all. I think these would be better for a larger animal, perhaps a guinea pig or rabbit. But, I think they're too hard for smaller rodents. I ordered them a softer "log," which they love.

It is a great background. Very realistic looking. Maybe a little too much. When I first put it on Louie (Bearded Dragon) kept trying to jump on one of the rocks. He has calmed down a lot since I put it on & his stress level went down.

Bought the unit, plugged it in and it worked great. It kept the ice from forming in the pond and my stream running through cold weather. The unit stopped working and a coil melted through the plastic. Customer service (800-277-8401) was called and they express shipped a new unit. Very friendly, great service. Hopefully the second unit will not fail.

I bought this product two years ago. It worked great the first year and kept the fish alive. The second year it shorted out the outlet cutting the power off which I didn't catch until it was too late. I thought at first it was the outdoor lighting around the pond, but a week ago I took the lights out and put only the pond heater in figuring it would work. It turns out every time I plugged it in it would short out and cut off the electrical. I'm now in the market for a new pond heater. It was a shame to see those fish floating at the end of winter last year...

I love this pond heater. It worked great for 2 years, then just stopped working for no obvious reason and ended up being frozen solid in the ice for a couple months.

I liked it so much that I bought another, but if this one doesn't last more than 2 years, then I will switch brands.

I bought and used this item in my 370 gallon pond 4 months out of a year and it worked great,but the second year of use it did not work,I did nothing different from the first to the second year and handled and put it away in it original box during storage.I did the direction thing about putting it in a freezer to reset a thermostat,which it did work for a short time but froze itself in the pond ice,so unless you like spending money annually for a fairly decent deicer when it works or did work is up to you.

Myself i am trying something else and hopefully lasting for more than a year.

I ended up using the supplied sticker backing to attach to my existing LED light for my 5 gallon nano, since I can't turn on moon lights with this fixture, I just mounted between rows of LEDs and chained 2 of these together, it's a great moon light and brings out the colors at night.

Horizontal Aquarium Thermometer

Easy to read, cheap and accurate. This one is removable without braking, which the older similar ATI thermometer wasn't. So all in all I can only recommend it.

I have one other ATI thermometer that works great. In looking for a second aquarium thermometer, I tried other brands, all of which failed miserably in comparison to this ATI product. Upon trying another ATI thermometer, success!

Nice Thermometer worked well, you can mount it vertically or horizontally. Seems to keep accurate temp! I have purchased two, I like them mounted horizontally along the bottom edge.

A lot of people say these types of thermometers aren't accurate. I disagree highly, I have several standard tube types that read the same temperature as this excellent unit. Plus unlike those where I have to take a moment to figure out the temperature, this one is clear at a glance. Unlike some other similar models, this one can be moved to other tanks or different spots on the same tanks. Very glad I purchased this, will buy this model again if needed!
