Pressurized Pond Filter
Buy Pressurized Pond Filter Now
I purchased the 500p-UV to replace an existing filter/UV that sprung a leak in the seal that protected the UV light. The damage was going to cost $150 so I opted for a new unit. This one was a step down from the Oasis unit I had, but Oasis is no longer sold in the US. The problems I had with the Fish Mate were that the unit requires dissasembly for a weekly cleaning while better units only require the turn of a knob to back flush. Also, the 500 in the 500 P-UV means it works for a 500 gallon pond, but only a 350 gal/hour pump. The 1000 P-UV will go to a 650 gal/hour. That was not mentioned in the description. So its going back and I'm looking for a larger unit.Read Best Reviews of Pressurized Pond Filter Here
Within just one week of installing the Fish Mate 500 our pond was cleared of the soupy green stuff. I squeezed out the filter pads once a week for about a month, then once a month, then hardly every. The pond water is clear and the plants and fish are thriving.Want Pressurized Pond Filter Discount?
I have had a long standing problem for the last couple of years with two small ponds that are part of a water feature. I live on a barrier island and both ponds were pristine until they were flooded during a hurricane. Ever since then I've been fighting a losing battle with algae. The pond with the sunnier exposure had thick algae blooms that I found impossible to control. The water looked like pea soup. Periodically I'd dump Clorox in them which would kill the algae temporarily but the ponds would remain turbid. I tried pool shock... even went to the extreme of dumping an entire container of pool shock in there... but it wouldn't clarify. Then I got the Fish Mate 500 filter.
I was a little uncertain as to how effective this was going to be so my installation was kind of temporary: I used a 300 GPH pump I had laying around along with 1/2" tubing I had to heat before I could get it stretched over the fittings on the filters. So the pump and its tubing are both smaller than the manufacturer intended.
I have watched this pond improve almost on an hourly basis since then. It is quite clear already and it hasn't run for a week yet. If it got no better I'd still be satisfied. I'm wondering what will happen when I clean it the first time: how much better can it get when it starts without that huge load of dead algae to contend with?
Since my ponds are directly adjacent to one another with just a narrow path between them, I'm thinking of alternating the use of the filter between one pond and the other. I'll just bury the tubing so it's not obvious and leave the filter itself located centrally. It does not have to be in the water itself. The only thing that must is the intake for the pump.
This is a GREAT product... I wish I'd bought one when my algae problem first took off. If there is any negative at all, be VERY careful when you remove the lid off the filter: there are some pretty flimsy plastic tabs located along its inside edges. I managed to break one off within my first minute of opening it. The tabs are probably there to help align the lid but losing one didn't seem to hurt anything. Still, I assume they're there for a reason.

Marina Naturals Green Pickerel Silk Plant
I have a 25 gal freshwater tank which I decorated with 12 silk plantssmall, med and large sizes and arranged the plants around black lava rocks and added a blue background. The colors of the plants look nice with the rocks and the blue background. The plants fan out from either side of the rocks and sway in the water. As long as the plant is set well in the gravel, it will not tip over.
The colors of the plants make the colors of my fish stand out more. Plus the fish seem to feel more secure because they can hide among the plants, like they would in the wild. They search the leaves and under the plants for missed food. There are lots of little areas among the plants for the fish to explore and hide. My little guys seem relaxed and like having these silk plants in their aquarium.
I am happy with these plants. I like the way they add color and texture to my aquarium, and my fish like having a more comfortable home. The plant has nice colors and fits well in a 5 or 10 gallon tank. It stands up well and I haven't noticed any staining from algae, unlike some other plants that I've purchased. The leaves are soft so they won't tear a betta's fins and broad so they can hide behind them or rest on them. I've bought other Hagen Marina Naturals plants and all of them are great quality!

I bought two of these a few weeks ago for my ten-gallon aquarium, and I love them. They are the perfect height for the rectangular aquariums, and very pretty. The leaves look realistic because of the way they are dark on the inside/base of the leaf and gradually lighten, and the fact that they are silk prevents critters from being injured on them. I would recommend this product for any aquarium taller than about 6".Read Best Reviews of Marina Naturals Green Pickerel Silk Plant Here
These are very nice little silk plants. They're soft and stand up well. They look much nicer than the cheap little plastic ones. :)Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Como Aquarium Artificial Duckweed Floating Plastic Green White Plant
They are made of stiff plastic and will most likely come to you with their white tendrils flattened, so they need bending.
It's a cool idea for larger tanks but they are a bit sharp and you would need about two orders to have a nice display in a 10-15 gallon tank.I bought this to go in my betta 1 gallon tank. It is just enough to cover 1/3 of the surface area so not to interferer with feeding.I have a live Java fern and Java moss in the tank also. I like the shadows this adds to the tank. I am going to buy more for my 2 1/2 gallon tank. I have bought real giant duckweed but don't have enough light for its survival.

Very cheesy. I thought I would use these in my tank with other live plants but they looked terrible. Most of them don't float correctly and they get caught up on decorations. I wouldn't purchase them again.Read Best Reviews of Como Aquarium Artificial Duckweed Floating Plastic Green White Plant Here

Supreme (Danner Inc) Uv Ballast 40 Watt
Its still under warranty so I called the phone number on the warranty paperwork (631) 234-5261. I was told to ship both parts back. I told the lady on the phone that the filter will not work with those parts removed and asked how long it would take to return the parts. Was told its really busy season now, could take a few weeks. I didnt want to go without any filter for several weeks so I procrastinated a couple days. I called back and was told to send in the ballast, it has a high failure rate and likely the cause. Since my water was turning greener by the day, I boxed up the ballast and sent it priority mail to Islandia, NY. Well after waiting a couple weeks I contact them to see if my part was shipped. I was told to prove they received the package. They wont ask the warehouse folks to look for a box unless you can prove they received it.
Long story short, I did not use tracking and consequently they wont look for it or provide any support. Please protect yourselves from this company and dont buy any of their products. A replacement ballast is ~$90!
The filter as a whole is poorly designed. The manufacturer forgets or ignores the fact that these types of filters sit outside 24/7. Consequently all the cheap plastic parts start to breakdown in the sun light. The first thing to crack will be the hose fittings. Dont worry, they'll accuse you of over tightening them, but really its the sun breaking down the plastic.
The silver band that holds the top and bottom together is cheap and flimsy too. It also stretches over time. Now it wont seal that well. So I had to add a whole bunch of washers to the screw so that I can somewhat tighten it.
They say to replace the bulb at least once a year. Thats another ~$70. Seems like you need to replace the ballast every 6months and the bulb once a year. So that averages to $250 per year in replacement parts.
Bottomline, buyer beware. Cost of ownership is great, components break down rapidly if installed in daylight, customer service is non existant anything you ship to them you better track. The jury's still out on this one. I bought a Pondmaster filter which had the ballast and bulb included. The bulb lasted a short while before dying. Then, the new bulb which I ordered died as well and so I ordered yet another. It turns out that it was the ballast that actually died, not the bulb, and so I ordered this one to replace it.
The UV light works incredibly well. Within a few days of the bulb dying, my koi pond was green with algae and so dark you could not see the shallow shelf one foot under the water. After installing the new bulb / ballast, the water was clear again within a week.
However, I wish that there was a light on the ballast so that you can tell if the bulb is dead or if it is the ballast that needs replacing.
Another thing, there is a big label on the ballast which says "The light won't work without the ballast". That label should be on the light, not on the ballast and, anyway, there is no way to get the light into the filter without the ballast. This label makes it appear as if you need another piece to go into the ballast; you don't.
My issue is that it takes several days for me to get a new bulb or ballast. Since you cannot tell which part is not working, you would be wise to have a spare of both. This is especially true where I live since my pond will grow algae in a few days.
The other issue that I have is that the manufacturer (Dana) would not help me out on this matter. I had to order new ballasts and bulbs, and then send the old parts to them for evaluation before they would do anything. I thought that perhaps the issue might have been the seal on the tube that the ballast will screw onto (into which the bulb is inserted). I thought that perhaps there was moisture getting into the sealed system. It was suggested by Dana that I buy a new tube because they do not sell, nor would send me, the seal by itself.
So I am now into my 2nd ballast, 3rd bulb and 2nd tube. This can get real expensive!
I will send the parts back to Dana, see how they respond, and update this report.
On the other hand, when the light works, it works great.

I made a warentee claim on my previous one, and Danner wanted it back for the claim. Since removing the old one meant re-plumbing, I bought this replacement. What hapened to the last one? It seems like it was overheating and then it melted the seal for the quartz sleeve.Danner customer suport is a bit of a pain... so don't buy their stuff if you don't want to be scratching your head after dealing with them. After sending photos of the damage and clearly telling them the problem (leave on for 30-60mins and it overheats and shuts off) and after makng me send it in (and have to fork out for a replacement to do so) they sent the old one back stating they could find nothing wrong with it, and what they sent back "may" be the same one I sent them, or be a reconditioned one, but it is not clear which... and they will not respond to my queries.
But... it does work really well to get rid of algae and floating critters... when it is working. I have a 1200 gal pond and the water is very clear without needing chems.

Worked for approximately 5 months. Replaced lamp, still did not work called Danner and was told to replace ballast. I asked " shouldn't the ballast have lasted more than one season" answer..."probably". JUNK!! $260 down the drain !I GOT LESS THAN 8 MONTHS USE FROM MY LAST BALLAST. THAT IS WHY I HAD THE NEED TO BUY THIS ONE. THEY ARE NOT CHEAP AND ARE SUPPOSED TO LAST AT LEAST 2 YEARS.Saturday, February 8, 2014

Works exactly as advertised. I have a 225 gallon acrylic tank with 1/2" thick acrylic. Does a very good job cleaning, with no visible scratching that I could see. I used Kent Seasquirts (and still do for other things) but this is the best tool for target feeding your corals. I found that the kent product was good, but it doesn't allow for changable tips.. so you need to get 2 if you want to cut a tip larger for more meaty feedings. With this, you can get a 3 pack of changable tips cut them to fit your needs for particular feedings.I also like the seringe style.. With the baster style feeders I tend to loose more food trying to gently get it out of the tube with this it's very easy to spot feed individual polyps. great little invention. and you can't beat the amazon price.
