After reading the one-star review, here are my two cents:

This product worked for me.

Don't put the mother in this nursery until the mother is due.

This product saves baby fish by pumping water from the bottom of the mother's pen into the nursery pen for the baby fish. When the fish are born, the fry are sucked down and up into the nursery pen.

Use a gang valve to adjust the air powering the vacuum so that it doesn't overwhelm the mother.

Pretty amazing, and the best concept for a consumer-level birthing pen that I have come across. Interesting to watch, too.

The plastic is the same brittle plastic that other nurseries use.

The small nursery pen should only be used temporarily before transferring the fry to a larger nursery with nylon netting.

Biggest piece of Junk I have bought for my aquariums. Very disappointing since most of my equipment is from PENN PLAX and I have been pleased in the past. However this item causes too much stress on mother and babies leading to death of mother, babies or all. It is MUCH SMALLER than pictured or quoted. Not worthy of ONE STAR. Would send back but not worth the shipping.

The product description states this "is a completely automatic system" that "creates a constant circulation." That is not even remotely true. This unit is simply a set of two very small, connected tanks that creates no circulation of any kind. If you want the water to circulate, and thus do what this product is supposed to do, you will have to purchase and attach a separate pump. Unfortunately, there's very little guidance on what kind of pump to purchase or how to hook it up. You will also need a gang valve, a check valve, and several sections of tubing, but, again, there's little in the included instructions to help you (not even an illustration of the final assembled unit).

Based on the misleading product description, and the fact that this item is completely useless without them, a pump with valves and tubing clearly should have been included with this set. A great idea that was very poorly executed. That being said, if you purchase the additional four items and get everything hooked up properly, it works fairly well.

Prevue Hendryx-Clean Life Play Top Bird Cage

I bought this exact cage but in sage/white about 5 years ago for my linnie. He loves it, so when I acquired a white-winged parakeet I figured I'd go with this as well. I've had this cage for a couple weeks now. It works great, has lots of room for ropes and toys. I never use the playtop feature on either cage because it's a hassle to move all of his toys that are hanging from the top and they have a separate play area anyway. I also don't use the perches that came with it because they are too small for his feet and I dislike plastic perches.

The black wire and base are more flimsy than the sage/white, but I've found this to be true in other brands as well so I don't really fault the cage itself. The base is so thin it did break during shipping, but was easily fixed with a strong adhesive. The sliding latch that closes the main door is also really flimsy and makes the cage difficult to open at times. I would suggest going with a white wire cage if this is an issue for you. I replaced the seed cups because I found the width was too short for him to comfortably eat/drink out of (they are different from the ones I got with the sage/white cage). The seed cups are also very low, so he has additional cups and foraging systems throughout the cage because I found he wasn't very thrilled with going all the way to the bottom for food. My linnie, however, has no issue with this in his cage.

Overall, I think it's a reasonably priced and roomy cage. I would suggest a larger cage if your bird rarely comes out though. It does a great job of mostly containing the mess. Obviously, some seed hulls still go flying, but it's not as bad as it could be. I would buy it again, even knowing that it is less sturdy than my other cages.

I had great hopes that this cage would be a great new home for our parakeet. Unfortunately, it had a defective door latch that made it unusable. The way it was packaged, it looked like someone else had already bought it and returned it and then it was resold to me. In addition to the unusable door latch, it has a flaw that makes it unusable for a bird as small as a parakeet. In some areas of the cage, the bars are too wide apart making it unsafe for a small bird such as a parakeet. I returned the cage and did not reorder.

Kordon/Oasis (Novalek) AKD37611 Rid Ich for Aquarium, 1-Ounce

I have been using this product for a couple of weeks. Although, there's still ich in my tank, it does seem to be attacking my fish a bit less. This product has been the best I have tried so far and I plan to continue using it.

Universal Rocks 24-Inch by 16-Inch Rocky Aquarium/Reptile Rigid Foam Background

You have to pretty much take all the water out of your aquarium if you want to install this thing. It's like trying to take a pool float to the bottom of the deep end of a pool. Then you have to quickly put your sand or rocks in to hold it against the back of the aquarium. Even then it still tried to slowly float away. I ended up having to buy aquarium sealant and some strong magnets to attach to the back of it and hold it down that way. If you can find the flexible aquarium only version of this, i highly recommend you get that one. The "clips" that it came with are nothing more than a small PVC pipe cut down that you pull apart to get it stay in place. But they don't work on most aquariums cause of the plastic lips that go around the top of the glass. And it's the bottom of this thing that needs to stay in place, not the top that sits above the water!

That all being said. It looks pretty dang good once you get it all set up. It doesn't look that great out of water but somehow that all changes when it get's wet. Ive got sand in my aquarium that matches the back ground perfectly and blends right in like they were made for each other. I also bought one of the rock sets that Universal Rocks makes and it also looks great with it. My Multi Shell Dwellers Cichlids seem to like both of them and even the fry will hide in the few crevices in the background when they need to take shelter from the bigger males in the tank.

Had to give it three stars cause this really shouldn't be sold to be used in an aquarium since it's made out of foam. Would have been 5 stars if it was made out of something that doesn't float!

We thought is was a entire turtle kit, but we read the information wrong, so it was our fault , return went well, although have not seen the refund on my checking summanry as of yet???

EcoPlus Commercial Air 5 - 80 Watts Single Outlet

Basically owned one and used it basically nonstop for approx. 3 months. Lost power and started making a lot of noise. The other one I have works good, no problems and I've been using it for about 3 or 4 months pretty much nonstop. Maybe I got a bad one? The seller said they would take it back though.

Ordered this pump based on having one of the same brand that works great. Got this one I stalled and find it to be really noisy. Checked all I can and find nothing is wrong so I assume it is just a poor quality pump. Hope it lasts....

Contacted the company....called and talked to a female who took all my info with a promise of a return call.....nothing for 2 weeks. Tried calling and leaving messages for a couple more weeks with no return call or contact. Finally got thru to a guy who again took all the info and promised an email with results of my complaint.....still nothing a week later.....left a message again......no reply after 1 day. Really tired of the no answer policy thus place seems to have.

I thought there might be a chance to get a replacement......at least ask about it based on the loudness of the pump...but they cannot even tell me that they will do nothing. I will continue trying to contact them just becaues I want an answer....this time aiming for someone at the top.

I have been contacting the store in Ca. and they verified my online purchase and have never said I was talking to the wrong place. They did say I could contact the manufacturer but why should I have to go beyound the seller for service.....

Petstages Green Magic Boomerang Buddy Catnip for Cats

Both of our cats like this toy, but Atticus really likes it. He wraps his front paws around it and "Bunny Kicks" it with his pack paws. I often find him dragging his 'Nana around the house. I think he particularly likes the curved shape, or maybe it's the color, because they have other kicker toys and this one is his favorite.

Got this about a month or 2 ago for my 3 gallon freshwater nano and all the plants are doing great. I throw it on for 12 hrs (8a-8p) and all is good. I had an LED light on previously and this thing kicks butt. The only downside is the coverage it's too much! I have it on top of a bookshelf and it pretty much lights my entire room up. LED does put out an amazing shimmer effect though, that I kind of miss. Wish there was an inexpensive freshwater LED nano light available. Also, keep a replacement bulb on hand.

The light was the exact size and watts I was looking for but I ended up buying the 50/50 replacement bulb for it and the set up is perfect!

One major problem is bulb replacement.I wanted a smaller wattage bulb instead of the supplied 13w.Couldn't use a Phillips 9w because bulb and reflector are one piece on the Perch-light. Hagen Nutrafin Nutramatic Fish Food Feeder

I'm glad to have this product, which was highly recommended to me by the man who services my 200gal home tank. It installed easily, 'though I will need to have my cover cut (an extra expense because I can't do it) so that I don't lose so much water to evaporation (by keeping lid off to accomodate the feeder). Seems to work as intended, but it is a little awkward to remove (for loading or battery changes), and more awkward to fill. Yet, it's a life saver! (For fish and me!)

Instructions are not clear, or even muddy, about installation. I presumed the unit would clamp to the side of the tank, not. An adhesive pad mount is included, (at least I assume it was to have adhesive, mine didn't) which mounts it to a horizontal top surface next to a hole or opening which would probably have to be cut out. My top filler panel is already short so I'll use this opening. Could have been better in this design aspect but all else is superior. Two time a day programing and designed so evaporating moisture doesn't gum up the dispenser as a lot of others do.

Ethical Contempo Tessa Food and Treat Dispenser for Dogs

We have a Lakeland terrier and an Affenpinscher both love this toy and play with it in different ways. The terrier bats it around until the treats come out, the Affenpinscher tries to bite it and pick it up.

Well, the Affenpinscher managed to fit her lower jaw through one of the side dispensing holes and could not get out. Lots of screaming and blood I'm afraid before we managed to cut it off her.

Apparently, for a brief time anyway, PetSmart carried these toys. (Contempo.) I came across them late though, and bought the pink model at about half the price it is here on Amazon. Only because PetSmart had already sent it to the clearance bin! I can't imagine why!

I bought this toy as a birthday present for our Lab mix who loves puzzles and a little challenge. I put some of her Blue Buffalo dry food in here and set the slot just barely big enough. She has a great time with it.

Now, for a con... Due to it's design, when it's empty she can (and will) chew on the plastic top. So this is not a toy I leave out for her. We do love it though!

This product does not hold a lot of dog food not even a cup. And the holes are too big. My puppy was able to get all the food out of there within a couple of minutes. I did adjust the setting to restrict the flow of food from bottom to top. I will try to reduce the size of the holes but for the price I should not have to spend time and effort to make this a usable dispenser. Save your money or buy the tug-a-jug or bob-a-lot.

Update 12/27/2012 I used duct tape to close one hole and reduce the size of another so now it takes my puppy a little longer to get the food out.

AQUABELLA Fresh Water Treatment

I have been keeping aquariums for many years and have always been leery of additives of any kind. Several months ago I started a new 90 gallon freshwater tank and have had troubles with cloudy water for most of that time. I am running a 90 gallon sump with 20 gallons of bio media as well as 2 canister filters (for mechanical filtration). Still I was unable to get the tank to clear up.

I've been an aquarist for many years. I haven't noticed any big improvement in water quality or reduced need for water changes, either, after using this product as directed. Accuair 4-Way Aquarium Gang Valve

I use it as a three way splitter with the fourth connection open. This allows me to use the fourth position to control the sound of the air pump by minimzing back pressure in the air line (just let it bleed into the room). When I left the 4th closed and the other 3 throttled to set the air flow on each of the three, the air pump was fairly loud because of the pressure built up in the airline. Opening the valve on the 4th (unused) connection relieved the pressure to keep to pump quiet.

My one complaint is the flexibility of the barb on which the airline slides onto. The airline itself (I used standard aquarium airline) is firmer than the barb on this gang valve so it was a bit of a pain to slide the airline onto the flimsy barb.

I purchased this aquarium kit as an upgrade from my Betta's bowl. The aquarium itself is a decent, rimless glass tank for the price. A nice little extra is the mat cut to the tank's footprint that comes in the kit. The hinged top is a piece of plastic so that it is unbreakable--which is good since the hinges come apart frequently with use. There is a tiny submersible filter that does work quietly and can contain sponge, carbon or ceramic media.

The light that comes with the kit is nearly unuseable. It is a mere 0.6 watt LED which is barely enough for a 'moon light'. The really annoying thing is there is no on/off switch and you have to plug and unplug the lamp to operate it.

For about $64.00 shipped, this works as an upgrade for the Betta bowl, but is definitely not suitable for maintaining live plants. If it were not a definite shipping expense to return, I would send it back and save the cash for a better setup.

Instant Ocean Aquarium Hydrometer

I'm using this to measure low salinity in brackish tanks and for salt ich treatments. One thing to remember....the directions say rinse Before and After....BUT when you rinse it in tap water, there are many drops of fresh water still in the instrument...if you dip it in tank water and take a measure, you will get a LOW reading....so dump that first sample after a minute or so...Then dip Another sample and you will have an accurate reading every time. This is a very good hydrometer for the money. Many buy expensive refractometers or resistive types which can also deceive you for a number of reasons.

We are involved in Marine Assessments in the Fiji Islands and we use this little device for on-site testing. Sometimes on the beach, sometimes on boat sometimes in a mangrove. It gives good enough results in the field to see whether furtehr lab testing should be carried out.

A bit fragile for carrying about, but I don't uppose that matters if you're testing a fish tank in your home!

When kept clean and when you dump the first scoop of water and slowly allow the water to enter so that there are no bubbles on the weighted gauge, and when the water temperature is in the high 70's, the reading is very accurate. I have recently purchased a temperature compensated refractometer from Bulk Reef Supply along with calibration fluid. I compared the readings using this hygrometer and the calibrated refractometer. The readings were identical.

Bought this to test the water in my marine aquarium. It's way off! Said the specific gravity was 1.022 when it was actually a extreme low 1.015. Lucky for me it's a new set up and no fish yet or else I'd be out a lot more money for sure. And yes I rinsed very well before and after use.

This is the most helpful product for any tank over 40 gallons, someone with back problems, or just those that are sick and tired of the water mess and buckets.

It's very well manufactured, even comes with a warranty, and it is soooo much easier to make a water change. Just hook it up, turn on your faucet and start syphoning. Also no mess when filling the tank back up.

If the aquarium is located a little higher than the sink you're using it will continue to syphon by itself and you can turn off the faucet. Otherwise the ratio is 5gal tank water syphoned out per gallon out of the faucet, which could be a little wasteful with bigger tanks.

I would give this product 10 stars, not 5. It's unbelievable how easy and enjoyable my fish tank maintanance become since I started using this kit. Not mentioning the quality of water and general appearance of the tank. Even algea bothers me much less since. I am always kind of sceptical when reading somebody else's product review, but never afraid to try something new myself. In this case it pays off 100% very smart, efficient and convenient device, doesn't require much space for storage and easy to use. The price is affordable as well. Do not hesitate to buy it if you have pretty big fish tank mine is 29 gallons. Along with using Emperor filter I do not have any tough time to keep my aquarium sparkling clean and my fish are healthy as never. Trust it and good luck!

This product is so helpful, it's ingenious. A simple vacuum/pump arrangement lets you suck water out of the aquarium and pump it back in without effort. I have a 29 gallon tank and only a 2 gallon bucket. Water changes used to take 30-40 minutes. Now, I can accomplish the same task in 10-15 minutes depending on the water pressure I use.

In contrast to the typical siphon gravel vac that comes with most aquarium kits, I find that the fish are less startled and less traumatized by the water changes using the Python. It also sucks up more waste than the siphon vac. As a new aquarist, this handy device has made tank maintenance very easy, thus helping me keep my enthusiasm for the hobby high. Looking forward to expanding to a 55g tank in the fall. Highly recommended.

The hose and syphon end is very good and durable. I have owned 4 of these since they came out. All of them broke at the faucet end, Drain/Fill part...ended up replacing them with waterbed fill kits, and those break too. (BTW) exactly the same thing! The other issue is there in-line shut off valves are junk as well. Lost $400 of Orange Mellow Angels because I had the hose in the tank with the valve shut off....got a phone call and came back 40mins later to continue my water changes to find a broken heater and dead fish with 1/4" of water in the tank. Valve was definitely shut off! I did a test with it on another tank and witnessed it drain a 30 gal tank in 40 minutes, with valve shut off, they leak around seal....needless to say, it got pitched and I got to flush cash down the drain (dead fish). I still use them however, I hook it up directly to faucet to fill tank and use a clamp to hold hose to utility sink to drain with it. Trick is to start filling tank with it on faucet then turn water off, unscrew it and it will start the syphon for you. Hope this helps.

Penn Plax Vertex Shrimp Tank, 2.7-Gallon

Just received and set up this small aquarium for my betta, in fact, just in the knick of time as my plastic 1.5 gallon tank started to leak. Comes with almost all things you will need to make a betta a very happy home, filter, small net and even a stick-on thermometer. When I say almost, it did not come with a light and that is the reason I did not give it 5 stars. I had to purchase a separate LED light because I keep live plants in my tank. All in all a very attractive glass tank. The lid to me is fine because it is made of a plexiglass or light weight plastic which makes it light to open compared to a solid glass lid and if it needs to be cleaned it is very easily removed. The only other small detail that is missing is a feeding hole. You need to lift the lid to feed and it doesn't stay up because it hits the front of the filter, but again since it is plexiglass you can drill a hole in it to make your own feeding hole or you can feed through the space behind the lid. It has curved front corners which you usually do not find in small tanks. I believe this one is listed as 2.7 gallon which again I find as a nice size for a betta, if you do not have the space to have a bigger tank. My betta was happy in the 1.5 gallon, but since I was adding driftwood along with my live plants, and of course my small 7.5 heater, I decided I would get a little bigger size glass tank and this one fit my needs with a reasonable price. I would recommend this tank.

Bought this tank for my betta after realising that his 0.9 gal tank was much too small. It's large enough for him to have room to spread out and swim around in now, but not so large that it can't sit on my night table and is difficult to move.

The lid is a bit flimsy, but the glass tank is very nice and sturdy, with rounded front corners and square back ones. The filter is quiet, although I haven't been able to find somewhere that sells replacement filters. Although, I haven't searched too hard. The tank holds the filter, a heater, a thermometer, two plants, a large rock, and a 8-inch castle figurine all very nicely without seeming crowded.

Sadly, he hasn't been able to spend much time in it due to coming down with a fungal and bacterial infection (not due to the tank), but I'm excited to have him get better and to be able to return to his new home.

My poor little Betta was freezing in his 1/2 gallon glass bowl. I upgraded to a 1 Gal square tank and added this heater. His water is now just a little cooler than luke warm. He is happy, spunky, and even made his bubble nest the day after I placed him in his new and warmer enviornment. It only took about 4 hours to get his water to a consistant temp and it has remained that way.

Well, this heater keeps the water at a nice temp for ME but not my Betta. I only have a 1.5 gal environment for my fish so this heater began to make my fish sick and he almost died. I read on a site that a heater should not be used unless my fish is in a 5 gal or larger tank...oops!

I took the heater out just in time to save my beautiful fish. I'm keeping the heater because I will eventually get a larger tank for him.

This product did do its job, so it's nice.

We ordered our first one of these heaters for the betta tank in our kitchen since it seemed to get pretty cold during the winter. It kept the water at a nice high-70 degrees in a 1.5 gallon tank. The betta went from brooding at the bottom to swooshing around the tank, chasing after us as we walked by. He was obviously much happier, so we bought a second heater for the betta in our son's room. Now 'Decepticon' is also much more active as well. We feel bad that the cool water was obviously having a bad effect on the fishes' metabolism, but now that they are warm they will have longer, happier lives.

My betta's 2 gallon tank was SO cold before I got this!! He was lethargic, swimming really slowly, clamped fins, not as excited to eat, and pooing less. This little heater probably saved his life!! Power-Glo Fluorescent Aquarium Bulb

My aquarium came with a flourescent bulb that was a 'soft white/yellow color'. I didn't like it at all. This new bulb has made a world of diference to the aquarium! The water looks clean and blue and the colors of the fish seem so much brighter and reflective under the new bulb. I definitely recommend this bulb.

I was in love with this light the moment I turned it on. It seems like its not as bright as a daylight bulb but because of the nature of the light the fish and tank in general actually seemed better illuminated. My yellow Labidochromis still look nice but not glaring like they did with the daylight bulb. The blues of the Yellow-tailed Acei are especially enhanced and the Zebra Obliquidens are stunning.

Definitely measures up to the hype. An excellent bulb for African cichlids.

We use this for a 10 gallon tank. The light it casts is slightly blue, at least as compared to our previous bulb. No complaints.

Tetra 77347 Ick Guard, 8-Tablets

I bought this at a local pet store because I noticed that one of my goldfishes had ick on its fins and a few on the tail. I only have two in a 10 gallon tank and the other fish was catching the ick. I was debating if I should use QuICK Cure or Ick Guard and I decided to use Ick Guard because it doesn't contain an ingredient that can cause cancer(formalin). Ick guard didn't work fast like it says on the box. I've used 7 of the tablets. By the 4th or 5th tablet, the ick was disappearing. Ick guard does work, but it is slow. Just follow the directions. Remove filter and change water 25% every time you add a new dose. The water will turn blue and it will disappear the next the day. I prefer breaking the tablet into four. I also used other stuff such as Stress Coat for every water change. I would put in Easy Balance as well. All in All, Ick Guard does work, but it is slow. I've read a comment saying they used 4 and it worked. I guess it all depends how the fish can take the cure.

Great price for this product compared to my local pet store. Does well with Ick that's been caught early.

That said, our tank had progressed too far and other issues and illnesses took hold. It started with Ick, but then quickly then went on to other issues. The pet store recommended a tetracycline product; and it did the trick to clear up everything — unfortunately too late for most of the fish.

Worked quick and great, with no harm to my dish. I have three Cory's, and five Molly's. Did discolor some clear plastic, so if you want to avoid staining air tubes, etc., remove those before using the product.

Like all dye based products, they'll turn your aquarium blue/green and stain your silicone seals bright blue. It does work, however.

American Marine Selcon Vitamin Supplement - 60 mL / 2 oz

There's a reason why Selcon is the most widely used vitamin in marine tanks it just works. Like others, I soak food in Selcon before adding it to the tank, and have noticed that the fish look better since starting them on it. I use this and garlic extreme to soak my pellets and frozen food in. I put 1cc of this (it has a measured dropped and 3-5 drops of garlic extreme, then let the food soak for a couple of minutes. Fish love it and it helps with my filter feeders and nps. I will buy it again.

Great nutrition for your fish. My maroon clowns are actually starting to get a bit of yellow in their stripes! Only drawback is that this stuff smells AWFUL, and is pretty expensive. However, you only need about 1 mL of it to prepare food for about a week.
