Update: If you use this product you need to monitor your ammonia levels very closely. I am a newbie to the fish pond world, and learned the hard way that a rapid kill-off of the algae will skyrocket your ammonia levels. Test ammonia in the following days after using this product and correct with ammonia decreasing products or you'll risk losing some fish.

I'm unclear weather it's ok for plant use. Your review states it's NOT safe for plants, but the bottle says it IS. What gives?

I bought a used MH light for my modified 29 gal BioCube and didn't know how old the bulb that came with it really was. I tried a Phoenix bulb which was VERY blue. My corals didn't seem to like it at all and my green bubble tip anemone was very unhappy. This Coral Life bulb is much better tolerated and it seems to provide the corals the light they like. Decent price but the packaging was not adequate at all. It came shipped in a small padded envelope. I would have thought a box would be better for a light bulb.

I really like this set for cleaning our aquarium. It's nice not to get your hands in the water when scraping the glass or cleaning the sand. My only complaint is that it would be really nice if the scraper rotated 90 degrees to either side. We have a bow-front aquarium and you can only scrap the front glass from side to side. If you try to scrape up and down (the only way this guy will work) you just scratch two lines at either end of the blade. Overall, not a huge deal...

Works great on my tank for the areas my clean up crew doesn't get to. Love the interchangeable heads and the long handle.

We had a fish tank at work that had been neglected as the owner of the fish got a new job. The tank was disgusting and the scraper in this kit cleaned the glass tank so easily. After cleaning the tank clouds up for a bit but once the filter cleaned things up the tank was sparkling clean. We found the fish and the scraper a new home but if you plan to keep yours a while I do recommend this tool for cleaning your tank.

Accuair 4-Way Aquarium Gang Valve

I use it as a three way splitter with the fourth connection open. This allows me to use the fourth position to control the sound of the air pump by minimzing back pressure in the air line (just let it bleed into the room). When I left the 4th closed and the other 3 throttled to set the air flow on each of the three, the air pump was fairly loud because of the pressure built up in the airline. Opening the valve on the 4th (unused) connection relieved the pressure to keep to pump quiet.

My one complaint is the flexibility of the barb on which the airline slides onto. The airline itself (I used standard aquarium airline) is firmer than the barb on this gang valve so it was a bit of a pain to slide the airline onto the flimsy barb.

I purchased this pump to use as a return for a 90 gal tank. While testing the plumbing, I found the pump has decent flow for a five foot lift. I was pretty happy with that. It was not the quietest pump, but for the money, I wasn't going to complain

The biggest issue with it is the housing. It is cheap plastic and very fragile. I snapped the return fitting clean off the top while securing the last of the plumbing connections.

I guess I'll be looking for a little more durable pump to finally get my tank up and running.

JW Pet Company Smart Temp Standing Thermometer Aquarium Accessory

I received this thermometer today and placed in my aquarium right away to test if it does in fact stay down as the description says, you'll be glad to know that it does stay down.

The fins you see at the bottom serve as an anchor, the fins have weight and are shaped to help the thermometer stay in place, but be sure to gently push the fins into the sand or gravel.

I have a wave maker in my tank that creates currents from two different directions every 2.5 minutes, the thermometer did not move once and hasn't since I placed it in the gravel.

The thermometer has both readings in Celsius and Fahrenheit on a white background with a "green safe zone" area in the middle. Reading temperatures is very easy, the visibility on the thermometer is very clear.

As for accuracy, I can say with confidence that the water temperature is displayed with minimal margin of error, if any, probably + or .2 degrees. I have a digital thermometer with a probe and both displayed the same temperature.

The overall construction of the thermometer is of very good quality and materials, the housing is made of glass and the fins of plastic, not sure what they used to give weight to the fins, but it works, it does sink and stays sunken.

Nowadays is hard to find good aquarium thermometers, they are either inaccurate or brake easily, this one however, even though is made in China, seems to be well built and I expect it to last. Hope this helps.

Ok...the reason I like the "rocket" so much is...

1) Unlike glass hanging thermo's there is no suction cup that fails after 2 weeks or top hanging thermos which only test temp at the water surface

2) Unlike other substrate based thermos, they don't constantly spin. These have "rocket" fins which anchor it in the substrate and prevent spinning.

The thermo is otherwise no different than most other non digital type thermos. Easily readable and relatively accurate.

Stays at bottom of tank as advertised. Accurate reading, but numbers are very small so a bit difficult to read. Blue bar indicating "ideal" temperature is helpful.

I was looking for a good thermometer for an acrylic tank. The stick-on types aren't accurate unless your tank is glass and the suction cup types just don't stay put for long. So, I chose this glass, standing model.

It's an accurate thermometer that stays put at the bottom of the tank. The cory catfish appreciates that food gets stuck by the base and he cleans it away without the thermometer budging. Very happy with the performance and the kids think it looks like a rocket.

What is a thermometer supposed to do? It's supposed to measure temperature. Well, I'm sure this measures temps, but I can't tell what they are. The scale is unreadable. Mechanically this looks like a decent product, but the water temp could be 60 deg or 90 deg, and I wouldn't know without sticking my finger in the tank. It does have a green zone on the scale, but it's not clear what temp range that covers. I wouldn't buy another one or recommend this product to anyone.

Marina Cool Air Pump

I have enjoyed this purchase. I have a 2 or 2 1/2 gallon fish tank (pet store brand) that i have had for several years. The air pump recently got very loud....annoyingly loud! I tried to get a replacement from the pet store (in store and on-line) that sells the fish tank, however, oddly enough, they don't sell the pumps seperately. I tried a newly designed Whisper air pump for tanks up to 10 gallons, and that worked just fine, however, it really was louder than i wanted for my little tank. I hoped that if i could find a pump for a smaller tank that it would be quieter. Indeed, this one fits the bill. It is quieter than the one i tried for a larger tank (and that one wasn't too bad either). Now, I hear the bubbles louder than i notice the pump sound! It also is quite powerful, so there are more than enough air bubbles for my fish. Granted, it isn't silent, but i don't expect that. Just a quiet hum. I worried it would move around due to it having 4 tiny "legs" on it, but it stays in place nicely. It has been a good purchase & very reasonably priced.

This pump is small, unobtrusive, quiet and does its job. Plus, the price can't be beat. I wouldn't feel right asking for more.

I hooked this little air pump to a ViaAqua6 LED bubbler in my 5 gallon tank and it's worked great for the 6 months I've had it despite it being left on for days on end.

Recently though, the pump's started to rattle and shake. Putting padding under it didn't help. I became worried I had to get a new one. (But even if I did, it would've been worth it!) Suspecting the case was loose, I tightened a rubber band around it, and I'm happy to report that it's back to its silent self.

The pump died on my 3-pod Aerogarden and I couldn't find a replacement. I called Aerogarden and the agent told me that they don't sell the 3-pod pumps separately. He said he could sell me a new base (with the pump built in) for $30, but that if it were him, he'd go to a local pet supply store and buy the smallest, most inexpensive aquarium pump available and that it would do the trick; so I shopped around and found this one on Amazon.

Since I'm not using it in a fish tank, I won't dock any stars from my rating, as I'm sure it's perfect for small aquariums (I know nothing about them). But there are a few minor problems with using this pump for an Aerogarden. First, you can't install this *inside* the Aerogarden; it needs to be placed somewhere near the Aerogarden with a short length of plastic tubing (a minimum of 10 inches) going from the pump and through the opening to the Aerogarden's water basin. The tubing isn't included so be prepared to buy some. I was fortunate to have it on-hand. If you are concerned about aesthetics, don't bother with this setup because it isn't pretty. Pay the $30 for a new base.

Second, It vibrates a lot and will move around whatever surface you place it on. I used some Velcro that was on-hand to keep it in place and that also dampened most of the noise caused by the vibrations.

Third, this pump is much more powerful than the stock Aerogarden pump (the 3-pod is only half gallon, this pump is for 5-gallon tanks) so of course it makes much more bubbling noise. The first day it was very irritating but I got used to it and now I actually find the noise to be relaxing.

This is a rather large ornament in height and width. It is well made and very pretty in color. It is very dense, not like some ornaments that have a few strands of vine. Tried it in my 5 gallon but it overwhelmed it. Even in my 10 gallon, it really overwhelmed. So, I could see it working nicely and looking good in a larger aquarium where it has space to blend in. Although I am not currently using it, I would recommend it for a larger aquarium.

API Proper PH 7.0, 250gm

I found this product to be very helpful in maintaining my aquarium at7.0. Don't expect this to be a miracle cure that keeps your tank perfectly at7.0 forever. This is meant to be something that helps you to avoid sudden shifts in pH, maintain a relatively stable pH between tank changes, or helps to bring your pH back to 7.0 when something altered it.

There really is no true way to keep an aquarium exactly at 7.0, and if the pH is changing rapidly that would be an indicator that there is something wrong with the overall water quality of the aquarium. Simply forcing the pH to remain at 7.0 doesn't mean water changes can be skipped or that overfeeding won't harm the water quality; all it really means is that the pH is within the ideal range of 7.0. I do bi-weekly water changes in my 40 gallon tank, and between changes I use this to maintain the pH at or around 7.0. My pH will drop to about 6.7 and this brings it back to 7.0, and then by the next water change it will be about 6.7 again until I change the water. This isn't meant to keep your tank at 7.0 forever, but it works great to help maintain a healthy aquarium.

If you find that this doesn't dissolve in the aquarium or it leaves the water cloudy you can dissolve it in water before putting it in the tank. I don't mind the cloudiness because when used in the recommended amounts it only stays cloudy for about 15-20 min as it dissipates into the water. I really don't see any reason why this would harm your filtration media when used properly. If anything the particles would get stopped in the filtration media which reduces the cloudiness as it continues to dissipate.

My husband told me to purchase the product for his fish tank because the PH level wasn't at the right level. Ever since he used it, He stopped complaining about the PH level. I guess it worked. :)

I gave this a four because when I opened the package it had a piece of lightly charred grass inside it, it leads me to question what kind of wood or operation is supplying this product. Tropical Fish Feeder - 0.5 oz.

This hydrometer is more accurate than it's smaller counterparts.

Con's:

The extra size and weight make it a little more likely to break, I have purchased and broken this hydrometer before. These break easily in the center when picked up from one end instead of the middle. The tip also can shatter if it is dropped into the water and hits the bottom or a hard surface.

My impression after owning several glass hydrometers of various sizes:

For aquarium use just buy the smaller hydrometers such as: Living Sea Hydrometer, Celsius & Fahrenheit, Small, 8 Inches, they work just as well when precise accuracy isn't necessary and they tend to last longer.

Even though this shows up under the search terms 'brewing hydrometer' it is a SALINE hydrometer. It will NOT measure specific gravity of wort for home brewing.
