Hydor 200W Submersible Aquarium Heater - Original Theo
On the box it says that the 200 watt heater is for tanks up to 56 gallons. I find that it is good enough for a 80 gallon.

I bought this on 1/19/2010 and then set the temperature to 77. It kept the water temperature to 82-83. It worked for the winter. When summer came, I unplugged the heater (still keeping the unit in the sump). Then with fall setting and as temperature started to fall, I restarted it. Overnight, the tank temperature shot to 92F and I saw all fishes gasping. Needless to say, lost my flame angel, mandarin, Clowns and Fire fish. That was one big disaster.I called Hydor up and the gentleman said to send the heater to them as they wanted to check for abuse. He was very polite and seemed logical. He also mentioned to send in the least expensive way so I put it in an envelop and sent it. Four weeks passed and I did not hear back so called them. They did not receive it and unless I could show proof, would not send me a replacement. I guess in todays world, that is how it is...
If you buy this product, make sure you have temperature alerts to warn about overheating and if you have issues with the product and want to send it back, make sure you keep proof of delivery.

I ordered this for my turtle tank, after deciding that my local pet store was way to expensive. I have a 50 gallon tank that is over half full I plugged this in and within a few hours it was up to temperature and has stayed there. I was looking at heaters specific for turtles being concerned he may shock himself, because turtles like to climb on everything in their tank. This heater is shock resistant so its perfectly safe. My turtle lays on this and is fine. Also it is completely submersible and can lay flat or upright. It is just awesome and in the pet store they want over $50 for one like this.Want Hydor 200W Submersible Aquarium Heater - Original Theo Discount?
My heater, when turned all the way down, kicks on around 79-80 degrees. It needs to go lower obviously. I plan to put it on a separate controller since the reliability is so weak. I'd advise you do the same if you purchase this.Wednesday, September 17, 2014

Coral Vue Technology AC20200 Octopus Hang-On Back Skimmer with Filter, 75-Gallon
If you are like me and do not want to have a sump setup then this is hang on skimmer is a good way to go. It is an all in one skimmer that saves so much time and effort with just one purchase. It comes with the "overflow" box and a pump to suck up the water from the overflow to the first compartment, then mixes it with air to create the airbubbles for the skimming in the next compartment, then the rest of the water goes to the next compartment that you can use for biofilter media, then at the top of that compartment has the return pipe.
Quirks:
This skimmer definitely has its downside which some may find irritating and not worth its purchase. The initial setup can be a challenge. It takes patience to balance the water levels unless you are okay with the massive bubbles that the skimmer can return to the tank. Even when you get it balanced, sometimes it can get out of whack and start bubbling again or the skimmer tube can over flow rendering it useless till you rebalance it. The skimmer may also return an excess amount of micro bubbles making the tank unsightly. I left for the weekend and the skimmer was causing so much bubbling that it splashed salt water all over the place and water logged my stand. So be aware of this.
How to find the skimmers sweet spot:
I had to do a lot of tweaking to find that balance of the skimmer. It took a combination of angling the return pipe, adding some tubing I had laying around and putting it in the return pipe to take up space, and controlling the air intake (for the bubbles), to make the water return not bubble. The air intake tube does come with a muffler but I never use it since I need the other adjustable air intake valve.
Other things:
The pump is immersed in the water in the first compartment. So this does increase the temperature of the water a bit.
The overflow box has teeth to keep the fish from getting sucked up.
The skimmer is meant to be a hangon, and is quite heavy when filled with water. If you plan on using it on a smaller tank, I would have something else supporting the weight rather than only the tank. It might be fine but since I live in a condo with people beneath me, I dont want to take any chances.
So if the benefits of an all in one hang on skimmer outweigh the headaches that you will have then this is a good buy. I haven't seen any other brand other than reef octopus that does something like this so until then, this may be your only option.

The medicine was not very effective . I used it to treat my powder blue tang and fox face for ick and pop eyes and the blue tangs condition got worst till it died and the fox face still had pop eye after the full. Treatment. I give it 3 stars because unlike most treatment this actually didn't effect the corals or inverts so I was happy about that. But as for the actual treatment part I wouldn't use it again.Read Best Reviews of API Melafix Marine Bottle, 16-Ounce Here

Bought this pump for less than $15 to replace my Whisper 2 (old model) and it is very nice. They have not changed much in these pumps,....except for one vital thing. They made the width the over the edge of the tank narrower by about 1/4" and it did not fit over my tank lip and I ended up cracking one of the tubes. Upset at first,...but then i realized that the Impellar was a perfect fit for my old model and just replced it. The replacement impellar parts were about $14 anyway and it uses the same size large carbon cartridges.Read Best Reviews of Tetra Whisper Power Filter 30, 30-Gallon Here
Easy to review this one... I've used other brands of aquarium filters and this one is the 'BEST'. As an engineer myself, someone actually knew what they were doing when they designed this product.Want Tetra Whisper Power Filter 30, 30-Gallon Discount?
I have used these filters for over 25 years. Have tried others...thinking they would be quieter, but, alas, NO, they aren't.I use the 20 Gal. filter on my 10 gallon tank to keep things more clear.
Only negatives: it is still a loud motor...even more amplified by the fact that my tank is in a display bookcase, but one gets used to the ambient sound.
It is no worse than the motors on a Cats water fountain (since they are the same motor)...and those of you who have live bearing, small fish, such as guppies...will need to use a small hole type of cover over the bottom intake...as it can suck up the newborns, as well as African Frog eggs.
All in All...it is a GOOD Filter and only got 4 stars because of noise factor....I wish they could figure out a way to dampen it down some.

Coralife Super Skimmer with Pump

I have been running an AquaC EV-240 with a mag 12 pump for over a year on my 300 gallon fowlr tank, I will tell the AquaC is one of the best dry skimmers on the market, but thats all they do, I put a coralife 220 super skimmer in the sump beside the AquaC and I do have to say, I feel the Coralife with the needle wheel technology is a far superior skimmer over the high pressure injection of the AquaC, as the needle wheel pump creates far more smaller air bubbles, and we all know, the more bubbles means more contact for the skimmate to be removed more efficiently.Read Best Reviews of Coralife Super Skimmer with Pump Here
I purchased this skimmer to replace a Prizm skimmer. I am so much happier with it. It's been running for 2 years now and is going strong. My main gripe with it is its adjustable flow-rate. It does have a dial for adjusting flow-rate, but I can't set it low enough. I run it on the lowest setting continuously. Many, many times after cleaning the skimmer and/or tank, the skimmer will fill the collection cup quickly with clean water. After the first filled cup or so, it settles back to the proper flow-rate and starts collecting scum again instead of tank water. Other than that, I'm happy. It fills the collection cup weekly, and the rate of skimmate (sp?) collection increases visibly every time I feed my fish, so it's very responsive.Right out the box it took me a while to hook up this skimmer, guess it was easier looking at the photos on the box and assemble this unit. First putting it in the tank, it produced lots of bubbles both in the unit and most of all in the tank wow what a mess!! I have a 55g salt water with corals and fish I needed something to work well with my investments, anyway, I found out that the shorter house that's connected to the pump works best and produced right mixture of air and water, after running this thing for 3 days the fourth day it just magically start working as it should, it did say a break in period, just leave it turn off the light and go do something else. I did not have to cut anything to make it work, just a little patience that I didn't have at all, so leave the bubbles in the tank alone, I only had the inflow valve set on half, then when it start working well I opened it to full, and with the red water level was set to almost between 80-90%, hope this makes sense, but no bubbles in my tank at all, water is crystal clear and clean. I had the Prizm red sea skimmer and thought I had a good skimmer until I go this one, oh my gosh I emptied the cup 5 days after it started working properly, some serious gunk in there real dark green and smelly, it was pulling out stuff like a sewer, to really clean the cup you need to unplug and unscrew the cup then wash it, but there is also a leak valve at the bottom of the cup, there is a small tube for this, and that's what I use when I don't want to unplug and fully clean, this skimmer is so quiet and smoother, only sound you hear is the little bubbles going back into the tank from the bubble diffuser. I have been running it for 2 weeks now and no problem just save all your tubing and connections. Its a bit bulky expecially above my T5 light.
Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog Treat
Buy Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog Treat Now
I have a giant-breed dog who likes to chew and I thought, after reading other reviews, that this large chew would last her a good while. She certainly loved it. Even as big as she is, she had a hard time carrying it around, but it lasted no time. Within less than an hour she's disintegrated an entire head off one end of the femur and was sawing down on the rest of the bone.Which is fine, I guess. Happy as can be.. but I've had much smaller bones last longer. And bought a whole box of hooves and had ONE last well over a week (the smell was even worse than these bones, though).
So, anyway. Yes, it's a hit.. but the duration is obviously going to depend on the size and determination of your dog (mine's a "soft mouth gripper" herding breed, btw.. not some wolf hound that likes to tear things to pieces for kicks and giggles..)
As for basic facts on the product itself (for those not familiar w/ chew bonesI wasn't until recently): They're greasy-feeling to the touch (you always have to wash your hands after touching them/getting them out of the wrapper for the dog); they smell pretty bad (fantastic to the dog, though); they've been smoked or something so there are baked-on flecks that are going to flake off all over your floors like crispy bits.. the dog will eat most of them, but you'll be sweeping/vacuuming behind him/her for quite some time and once the bone is finally broken down to bits, there will be shards (most often) and small round tiny bits that can be stepped on or hazards for small children (just be aware if you have them) and your vacuum that will have to be picked up by hand before vacuuming. Best for an outside treat (unless you have roaming neighborhood dogs that will steal them like I do.. she has to keep them inside and I just have to clean them up.. and a lot of the reasoning behind getting these things is to keep them from chewing inappropriate things IN the house). So they have their pro's (they WORK, they attract the dog's chewing attention very well) and cons (a freaking smelly mess).. I find it worth it but will find a different product (probably go back to hooves).

Aqueon Aquarium Water Changer
1. Don't connect the hose to the part that goes on the faucet (water flow assembly) until after you have it screwed into the aerator hole. It twists much more easily.
2. Make sure you remove all of the coils out of the hose so that it lays flat before using each time.
3. Make sure your faucet is facing down. We have one that pulls out so you can spray with it, and it tilts to the side unless we put it in facing straight down. (oh, and if you have this type, there IS an aerator hole on the bottom of it, just flip it over and look -that's where it hooks up).
4. Buy a second thermometer so you can get the water temperature of the water from the faucet. Your water flow assembly will have to be open. When you're done, turn it off to fill up the hose. Make sure your vacuum is set to off. Once it's filled, turn water assembly to on first, and then vacuum to on.
5. If you don't want to waste as much water, you can reduce your water flow to a point where there is still suction, but lower water output.
6. Before you start to refill, turn vacuum to off and manually raise hose starting at tank so that all of your dirty water is out of the hose before refilling tank.
Think that's it.I own both this and the Python equivalent and it is painfully obvious that the Aqueon is way better made. The Python leaks horribly at the faucet connection and has snapped apart from the faucet multiple times. They're basically the same product, but the Aqueon is better quality and so I recommend it.

Received this item a few days ago and tried it out. Here are my thoughts.Hose Thick and sturdy not flimsy like a lot of other vacuum hoses. Won't crease on you during use which is important. I believe it will stand the test of time.
Vacuum Attachment Thick and wide enough to do the job. Won't break apart as you scrape it through the gravel to suck up the crap buried in it.
Faucet Attachment Comes with several different attachments. Fit on my faucet easily with no leaks.
Use Put the vacuum end into the water. Open the valve at the vacuum and open the valve at the faucet while running the faucet and the auto-siphon will begin. Make sure you turn off your aquarium filter so you don't burn it out and remove any plants/decorations in the water so you can do the job right. Might also be a good idea to clean out your sink of dishes, etc because all that crap will be coming back to your sink and going down your drain. Get down into the gravel and watch all the crap start lifting out from between the rocks. After you're done vacuuming simply lift the vacuum out of the water and let all the water suction out of the faucet end until the hose is empty. To fill the tank back up, simply close the faucet valve and the water will flow freely into the tank back through the vacuum end.
Easy enough and definitely worth the money. Good luck!

The Aqueon water changing system is a simple device that makes aquarium maintenance a snap. Back in my younger days, I used to use a cheap gravel siphon and buckets to change my water. This took up a considerable amount of time, was often very messy, and would stress my fish out.I later upgraded to a sand substrate instead of gravel (don't have to siphon the the bottom floor anymore, just skim the top :)), bought a python system and was finishing my weekly water change in less than 15 minutes. However, the plastics in the python system wore out over time and I was having issues with leaks. The problem with the python system is that it uses plastic threading to choose either suction or fill modethis part of the system wears out very quickly, especially if you use sand because it grinds against the thread when you are constantly twisting. I personally think the python manufacturer designed it this way so that the owner has to buy new replacement parts, which often cost almost a third of the entire system.
After my python system became useless, I bought this Aqueon system to see how it compares and it's MUCH better in terms of reliability and build quality. The aqueon system plastics will not wear out as quickly as the python system because the suction/fill selection uses a switch to turn it on or off. There is no pulling or twisting to be done here to turn suction on and off, so the threading is not worn out.
I really don't know why the Python system is so much more popular, the Aqueon system is far better in my opinion. I've owned both systems, and you cannot go wrong with the Aqueon system!
Spend the extra 15 or 20 dollars over the cheapy gravel filters and buy a real system like the Aqueonyou'll be saving lots of time, stress (on yourself and your fish), and workload.

I recently moved my two goldfish from a 10-gallon tank into a 55-gallon tank, so the water changes have more volume and are more time consuming. Their tank is located in a bedroom that I use as a home office. The nearest sink is in the kitchen and isn't designed to accept a screw-on fitting.I got the 50-foot-long hose because the only place I could think of that I could hook up the valve was at the laundry sink in the basement. The question was how to get the hose from the main floor to the basement. My husband thought of using the laundry chute. It worked like a dream. I was able to hook it up and syphon and add water without a second person. This marks the end of using a 5-gallon bucket to change the water. When I was done, my husband helped by picking up the hose and feeding it down the chute to me so that the hose could be drained into the sink.
I believe I will change their water more often because this makes it so much easier. Attaching the tubing to the valves takes a bit of effort, but there were no leaks.

25 Foot - Python No Spill Clean and Fill Aquarium Maintenance System
It's very well manufactured, even comes with a warranty, and it is soooo much easier to make a water change. Just hook it up, turn on your faucet and start syphoning. Also no mess when filling the tank back up.
If the aquarium is located a little higher than the sink you're using it will continue to syphon by itself and you can turn off the faucet. Otherwise the ratio is 5gal tank water syphoned out per gallon out of the faucet, which could be a little wasteful with bigger tanks.I would give this product 10 stars, not 5. It's unbelievable how easy and enjoyable my fish tank maintanance become since I started using this kit. Not mentioning the quality of water and general appearance of the tank. Even algea bothers me much less since. I am always kind of sceptical when reading somebody else's product review, but never afraid to try something new myself. In this case it pays off 100% very smart, efficient and convenient device, doesn't require much space for storage and easy to use. The price is affordable as well. Do not hesitate to buy it if you have pretty big fish tank mine is 29 gallons. Along with using Emperor filter I do not have any tough time to keep my aquarium sparkling clean and my fish are healthy as never. Trust it and good luck!

This is my second NSPC&F after the first one, which lasted around 3 years of weekly use, succumbed to my punishment. This siphon really does make a huge difference in changing the water in my 75 gallon tank -what used to take an hour now takes 20-30 minutes. Plus, there's a LOT less mess than hauling buckets of water through the house.

This product is so helpful, it's ingenious. A simple vacuum/pump arrangement lets you suck water out of the aquarium and pump it back in without effort. I have a 29 gallon tank and only a 2 gallon bucket. Water changes used to take 30-40 minutes. Now, I can accomplish the same task in 10-15 minutes depending on the water pressure I use.In contrast to the typical siphon gravel vac that comes with most aquarium kits, I find that the fish are less startled and less traumatized by the water changes using the Python. It also sucks up more waste than the siphon vac. As a new aquarist, this handy device has made tank maintenance very easy, thus helping me keep my enthusiasm for the hobby high. Looking forward to expanding to a 55g tank in the fall. Highly recommended.

The hose and syphon end is very good and durable. I have owned 4 of these since they came out. All of them broke at the faucet end, Drain/Fill part...ended up replacing them with waterbed fill kits, and those break too. (BTW) exactly the same thing! The other issue is there in-line shut off valves are junk as well. Lost $400 of Orange Mellow Angels because I had the hose in the tank with the valve shut off....got a phone call and came back 40mins later to continue my water changes to find a broken heater and dead fish with 1/4" of water in the tank. Valve was definitely shut off! I did a test with it on another tank and witnessed it drain a 30 gal tank in 40 minutes, with valve shut off, they leak around seal....needless to say, it got pitched and I got to flush cash down the drain (dead fish). I still use them however, I hook it up directly to faucet to fill tank and use a clamp to hold hose to utility sink to drain with it. Trick is to start filling tank with it on faucet then turn water off, unscrew it and it will start the syphon for you. Hope this helps.Saturday, December 28, 2013
Aquatic Life Light T5 HO 6-Lamp 4-Lunar Aquarium Light, 48-Inch
The fixture itself is very durable and has a convenient (and removable) acrylic splash guard to protect your bulbs from the water. The built-in timer is great for setting up your own lighting schedule if the stock configuration isn't what works for you. The timer also allows for you to manually turn on your whites, blues, or less independently, which is a huge plus. Probably the only drawback of the timer is that there is no battery backup built in to preserve the time if there was a power outage or power flicker.
The adjustable legs are very easy to work with and Aquaticlife provides the wrench to tighten down the legs when you get them in the right spot. I have used the stock bulbs since I got the unit about 6 months ago and they are still running just fine. There is only 1 10K bulb that comes with the fixture, so if you are looking for more white light, you'd probably want to purchase an additional 10k bulb and swap out an actinic light. I liked the stock configuration and my corals are doing great so I left it as is. The nighttime moonlight LEDs are very bright, and I ended up disconnecting 2 out of the 4 sets of LEDS because it seemed excessively bright for me. This was very simple and only a matter of unplugging two of the cords within the fixture.
In terms of customer service, these guys are the best. When my unit came in, everything worked great, but about a week later half of my lights went out. I called up Aquaticlife and they had me run a few tests over the phone. They determined very quickly that a ballast had went bad in the unit and they immediately shipped out a replacement ballast. Even though I consider myself "handy", I know for certain that anyone could have done the swap with great ease. Once you remove the plate to the ballast (two screws), you simply unplug the old and plug in the new! It was a good experience because I learned that if I had an issue the fixture would be VERY easy to work with. Also, Aquaticlife guarantees their product bumper to bumper if you have any issues. Their ballasts are also covered under their lifetime warranty if they go out, so you don't ever have to worry about expensive parts. The only part ever to replace will be the bulbs!
I shopped around a great deal when looking at affordable lighting, and am VERY happy with this fixture. I probably could have gotten away with a 4 lamp fixture for what I currently grow, but I didn't want to limit the potential of the reef tank by saving a few bucks in the short-term.Excellent reef setup tons of light very high par value. Swapped a few bulbs out though for some different wavelenghts

ATI Aquarium Thermometer

I was shipped a different item without my knowledge or approval so I am sending them back. What I received were ATI thermometers that are shorter with bright orange numbers and outlines. The temperature colors are next to the bright orange numbers as opposed to the numbers and colors being together as in the photo. I don't want bright orange numbers that stick out like a sore thumb so back they go. Since I did not use them I'm grading them at 3 stars based on the fact that they are bright orange and not discrete. People should be looking at my fish not bright orange thermometers. For some reason I there is no longer an option to upload my own pictures to show what I mean.Read Best Reviews of ATI Aquarium Thermometer Here
The application of the thermometer is simple just peel and stick. If you make a mistake and decide to move it, it does exactly what it's advertised to do, it easily peels off and sticks back on somewhere else. The only real issue I have about this particular thermometer is that every time I do a water change (whether it's 25% or 100% change) the thermometer stops working for hours. So for a few hours I have to determine the water temp by using my finger, which we all know is the worst way to determine actual temperatures.
Also, I needed to move the thermometer once and doing it was simple but for some reason, one of the corners refuses to stick again.
I plan to buy a floating thermometer since I think those are better and more accurate and more than likely won't stop working every time I change the water.
For the price, though, this ATI thermometer is decent. I just wouldn't rely on it for permanent use. This is good if you're on a tight budget or if you just bought a new aquarium and aren't sure if you'll have room for a floating thermometer yet.I needed it for my betta tank, It works great, nothing to complain about. And the price was fair too.

Aquarium Specimen Container
The smaller size is barely big enough for any average net so it's difficult to handle the fish. However, this large container is perfect for just about any net and also can hang on tanks of all sizes from 10 gallon to 150 gallon tank rims.
The only drawback is that the plastic turns from clear when new to frosted/scratched looking plastic in a hurry. Not a problem normally, but a problem for people trying to take pictures or look closely at the specimen for details.
Regardless, this is an essential item to anyone with fish or small pets.
Strongly recommended.Whenever I had to make any changes, or even taking water samples in my tank, it had always been an issue. This container (what you see at a store when they are collecting fish for sale) is so useful in so many ways... It is made out of a very strong feeling plastic, and I have no doubt will last me years of use.Same transport box used in pretty much any fish store. Works fine as advertised, if a little small. The mount is secure tho and attaches easily on my tank or canopy. Crazy useful.

Fluval CO2 Indicator Kit
Basically this is how this product works.
1. Remove the cap and put 1ml of the included solution inside (Fill up to the line, pretty simple).
2. Put the cap back on the base (with suction cup) and slowly flip it so the point is now facing up.
3. Place inside the aquarium, preferably somewhere where no air bubbles may become trapped underneath, ruining the results.
4. Give it a few hours to get the correct reading initially.
Few placement tips:
-Again if air bubbles are being trapped underneath from a co2 air stone(etc) or just a regular air stone it will cause inaccurate results.
-Try to place it 4-5 inches from the top of the aquarium, in a spot where you can clearly see the colour.
-Make sure your tank has good water movement to ensure accurate results
It says the solution lasts 2-4 weeks which is somewhat vague. I guess I would replace the solution every 3 weeks?
It also only includes 10ml of solution so this wont last that long. Around 6-8 months probably
This is a great little tool to tell if your plants are getting enough CO2 . It will not tell you ph or kh and those must be monitored separately.
Overall if you don't mind getting a replacement solution every few months, this works great, and is the best at what it does.Although not as "pretty" as a fancy glass drop checker, this doesn't look bad at all once it's in the aquarium, and the premixed indicator solution makes it foolproof to use. Just squeeze in the indicator solution up to the line (the bottle has enough for at least 3 refills) and you're ready to go--no need to mix up a reference solution, etc etc.
Superbly convenient and the indicator solution seems to perform well for at least 6 weeks for me. It's accurate enough to show me daily variation in CO2 and showed me clearly when I was over the top with gas--as verified by an algae explosion. I now keep the indicator showing a nice deep to Kelly green during the day, and growth is spot on with algae in check.
A good buy!

Good seal on the cone. I highly recommend this because it works as it should.easy product to use. just fill it turn it upside down and stick it on the wall of the tank. reading the co2 range is easy yellow is too high green is just right and blue is too low.Great product that is very easy to use. It also has a poly-floss type filter insert that can be rinsed off when dirty & replaced only when absolutely necessary. Also being clear with the bright yellow compartments it's easy to see inside for anything that you need to check on. I just rinse the bio-media & the poly-floss insert about once every 2 weeks & I'm good to go! Just be sure to rinse it in the aquarium water you're changing or in de-chlorinated water, you don't want to kill off the beneficial bacteria.
The compartment that would hold the carbon has a good enough sized area that you could easily put any other kind of media in it that you like. Purigen, zeolite or whatever. Just put it in one of those nylon media bags & you're all set.
All in all I'm very pleased with this filter & would buy one again without hesitation. This product was easy to assemble and seems to work well. It is a little loud, but I got used to the sound.

I have never used a skimmer and really bought this for the pump for backup. Pump really only works in skimmer but I tried it and what do you know! I now love skimmers.
