Bio Wheel 37 Gallon Kit W/ Led Light

Bio Wheel 37 Gallon Kit W/ Led LightPros;

Nice kit, everything included except rocks & plants. Good price.

Cons; LED light seems to have a bad design. My LED crashed 1 1/2 month after install. After inspection, the flimsy switch and power inlet both had corrosion. Would recommend using the light and removing and placing it in a dry area after each use. Leaving it on the tank seems to invite humidity and could make the LED light fail.

Great tank for beginners and novices. All in one just like previous comment said. I also had my LED light go out about 5 months in. Took apart the light and saw major corrosion. Not sure what to do at this point. All the other parts work well and can't complain about that. I might switch out for regular lighting so I can use live plants.

Seachem The Bag Filter Media Bag

Seachem The Bag Filter Media BagI just received "The Bag" 5x10" resealable media bag. I'm using it to hold Purigen, and it's going in my Brand new Fluval Fx5. Everything is great, The bag seems durable and none of the purigen spills out. Water flows through it rather easily too. My only complaint is in the description, both on the site, and on the box for the back it says, "...comes with a convenient resealable locking closure." I read this as it has a "Zip Loc" Type enclosure. Probably much more durable and strong. When I Opened it, it's even better. It has a reusable Zip-Tie. I'd never seen a reusable zip-tie before this product and It's really neat. Infact I want some just for my computer cords, and other organizational needs It'd be much easier than regular zip ties. lol

On the other hand I would -notuse this media Bag to hold other types of media, it's just overkill. You only need this bag if you are planning on using Purigen in it.

The best filter media bags I've come across in over 30 years. As a long time fan of Seachem products, it didn't surprise me that they would develop a media bag that surpasses all others. The fundamental problem with most filter bags is that the sides are stitched, this means that over time the acidic elements in the aquarium water along with the constant water pressure, especially in canister filters can result in burst seams.

Another problem being the sting type closures. These closures are usually cotton or a cotton and synthetic mix. The closure will break down at some point depending upon the water parameters in your tank. These bags are inexpensive and can be replaced but who really wants the extra burden of opening up your filter to check and or replace a media bag?

The media bag by Seachem is a 180 micro mesh with welded seams, these seams can last for decades the possible way they would burst is if you over fill the bag with far too much media. As for the closure, it's water safe plastic, which once locked in place isn't going to pop open and blast media into your filter and all over your tank.

Another benefit of "The Bag" is that it's immune to recharging media with bleach as you can do with Purigen one of the most advanced filtration media on the market today.Any other media bag would never hold up.The one complaint I have and this has to more with the Marketing of Purigen itself rather than the bag. Is that Seachem should do a better job making it clear that you must use at least a micro mesh of 180.

To use a wider mesh you'll end up with any very fine media such as Diatomaceous earth or Purigen pouring out of it like flour through a sieve.Yes, at $14.95 it's expensive, but if you take good care of it you'll never have to replace it. To find it here on Amazon for a mere $8.13 is an absolute steal. Considering how long this product will last it pays for itself, many times over.

I use them in all my filters and would recommend them to any hobbyist.

Seachem's purigen is so fine it is hard to find a filter bag it will work with. This one is well-built, comes with a decent tie, and is around the same price as other bags that don't tend to do the job as well.

combined with Seachem Purigen, my tank has been much more stable and therefore easier to clean, Not as worried about crashing the nitro-cycle.

Vo-Toys Tuscan Dripped Glazed Dish - 8.5" - Red

Vo-Toys Tuscan Dripped Glazed Dish - 8.5' - RedI feed two 60 lb dogs out of these bowls. They are super sturdy and thick and heavy. So worth the price!

Good weight at the base of the bowl, and straight sides. I got this because of my puppy, who seems to think he will catch the Loch Ness monster or something if he can only dig out all the water and get the bowl turned over. This one isn't spillable, so putting the bowl inside a cookie sheet solves most of the problem and keeps most of the floor dry. Now if only it could tame the high pitched excited squeaking whenever Nessie is sighted in the depths of the water.....

Hand Held Algae Pad - Acrylic

Hand Held Algae Pad - AcrylicThis item has never failed me, never scratches. When wiping the tank near the bottom, take care not to trap any material(dirt or gravel) between the pad and acrylic tank. Wet the pad for a couple of minutes before using. I use it for the inside of the tank, and also wipe the outside to eliminate water streaks and finger prints. On the outside,HAND HELD ALGAE PADACRYLIC finish with a soft cloth for a great appearance.

I had been using this cleaning pad to scrape the algae off my tank walls for several weeks with no problem. It preformed rather well removing the buildup with minimal scrubbing. When packing up the tank to move I first drained the water before using. BIG MISTAKE. Using this pad on a dry acrylic tank wall will scratch it. Nothing too noticeable but it's still there. I can't knock the too many stars off it because the packaging says only use on wet aquarium and it was so cheap, just be warned.

I cleaned my SeaClear 20 Gal acrylic tank with it. It does the job and doesn't scratch the tank. Just make sure you don't trap sand in it. The size is also good.

If you have an acrylic tank it's important to clean with a product designed for acrylic rather than glass or you will scratch your tank. I like this particular cleaning pad because of it's small size and easy to get in corners (something you can't do too well with a cleaner that's on a handle.) I am very satisfied with this product.

Penn Plax Cascade Nylon Filter with Biological Ceramic Rings

Penn Plax Cascade Nylon Filter with Biological Ceramic RingsThis does the same thing as the charcoal with a lot less mess. It is a pain to have to remove the charcoal packet every time I put in an algae treatment. I just set up a new aquarium and for some reason the algae has been very difficult control. Correction, it has been out of control but I'm winning the battle. I recommend these and believe you will like them too.

Have not used them yet but arrived as expected. Have read about ceramic rings and their usefulness for maintaining helpful bacteria in aquarium filtration. Will update after having used them.

AQUARIUS AQ1224 Aquarium LED Light Strip - Expandable 18 to 24, 91 LED Lamps

AQUARIUS AQ1224 Aquarium LED Light Strip - Expandable 18 to 24, 91 LED LampsBought this for my 10 gallon quarantine tank, and it looked nice online with 91 LED's and what not, but when plugged in, the day light setting isn't all that bright. It seems to be more of a dusk or dawn lighting system instead. Although it does make the glofish pop having the blue in there. In any case ~ it seems to be built pretty well, but during the night time the tank is definitely more blue than anything else.

I own 3 of this aquarium light and I have had enough of them.

Some basic info:

91 3-5mm LED bulbs, 49 White, 42 Blue, placed in a look-alike T8 fluorescent tube

Worldwide voltage, regulated PSU @ 24V

Total power consumption @ 5W

Simple (outdated) non-regulated LED circuit 7 LEDs in a group with a 180ohm resistor

LEDs rated for ~30,000 hours

First light:

Came without a PSU. Returned it for another one.

Second light:

Complete package. Worked well for 3 weeks @ 12 hours a day till one of the group of 7LEDS went dead.

Third light:

Brand new, it was obviously brighter compared to my 2nd light. I wasn't sure whether it was because of the fault in the 2nd light but time will tell.

Two months into usage of the lights.

I am absolutely certain that the light output is decreasing. The third light is no longer as bright as before, now it is just dim. Needless to say for the second light, dimmer.

To summarises:

Unreliable; Not bright at all; Expensive for what it is

Seriously, just stick with fluorescent lights till LEDs have their reliability proved.

There is no way this LED light will achieve 30,000 rated hours at the rate it is getting dim. Actually, LED lights have a rating which states how long they will sustain the bright before decreasing in output. The last time I checked, most LEDs are rated 3000hours only.

Most fluorescent lights at rated for 10,000 hours and they have a relatively constant light output.

Eheim Universal Aquarium Water Pump 630GPH

Eheim Universal Aquarium Water Pump 630GPHVery quiet. Had it running for about 1 year.

No problems at all. No noise.

Easy to clean.

Just need to watch out for the small black ring around the shaft. One of them fell off (and I could not find it), and I had to buy another full shaft.

I got this eheim to replace my mag 5 that was running virtually silently for several years as a return pump for my aquarium sump because the mag 5 started to vibrate very loudly after I used it to drain my basement after a flood. The eheim is actually louder than the mag 5 it replaced. I think I may have just received a bad pump, but would think that if I paid over twice the amount for the eheim than the mag 5 that quality control would be better. The eheim is a very strong pump, however, I just wish that it was as silent as the reviews state.

Hagen Nutrafin Nutramatic Fish Food Feeder

Hagen Nutrafin Nutramatic Fish Food FeederI'm glad to have this product, which was highly recommended to me by the man who services my 200gal home tank. It installed easily, 'though I will need to have my cover cut (an extra expense because I can't do it) so that I don't lose so much water to evaporation (by keeping lid off to accomodate the feeder). Seems to work as intended, but it is a little awkward to remove (for loading or battery changes), and more awkward to fill. Yet, it's a life saver! (For fish and me!)

works quite well but has a tendancy to fall into tank . . . . . . . . .

Buy Hagen Nutrafin Nutramatic Fish Food Feeder Now

Instructions are not clear, or even muddy, about installation. I presumed the unit would clamp to the side of the tank, not. An adhesive pad mount is included, (at least I assume it was to have adhesive, mine didn't) which mounts it to a horizontal top surface next to a hole or opening which would probably have to be cut out. My top filler panel is already short so I'll use this opening. Could have been better in this design aspect but all else is superior. Two time a day programing and designed so evaporating moisture doesn't gum up the dispenser as a lot of others do.

Repair Kit for Tetratec AP50 and AP80 Air Pumps

Repair Kit for Tetratec AP50 and AP80 Air PumpsGreat little kit, much cheaper than buying a whole new air pump. You will want a pair of tweezers or forceps to remove and replace some of the very tiny plastic parts. There's a cute little wrench included in this kit but a decent small pair of channel lock pliers or Vise-Grips will be handy, as will a real screwdriver. I'd suggest a Q-Tip cotton swab, also, for cleaning the inside parts of the air pump where the new valve will go. The spaces are too small for anything else to do the job. You'll want good light and about ten minutes of time to get this done (I have two kids so staking out ten minutes of time is a big deal). The rebuilt pump works great and I love small projects like this. For me, the entertainment value in repairing the old pump was as satisfying as having one of old Tetratec pumps working like new again.

110V 50W Watt Submersible Aquarium Fish Tank Water Heater

110V 50W Watt Submersible Aquarium Fish Tank Water HeaterThe heater that arrived does not look exactly like the one in the picture. That said, I am 100% satisfied with this heater. I put this 50 watt heater in a 5 gallon Corydoras Habrosus breeding tank, and it has already been through a month-and-a-half breeding cycle with varying temperatures. The temperature dial is about 2-4 degrees off, but I am used to having to calibrate heaters (even the expensive ones seem to be a bit off). For the price and quality, these heaters cannot be beat. I will be ordering another one soon for a new grow out tank. Be aware that the cord is short.

Pros:

Price

It just works

Gravel guard

Well designed suction cup mount

Good construction

Cons:

Short cord

Need to calibrate to your thermometer (Like all but a few adjustable heaters I have seen, the thermostat is off a couple of degrees no big deal).

At first I was a little miffed because it did not come with any instructions, but after a few months of tinkering with it, well it works great I like that u can adjust the temp, not really sure in how much, but after getting a thermometer it stays at a steady 80 degrees and even after doing water changes it adjusts itself to get right back up to 80. Its worth it for the price I paid. But it could have been a potential disaster if I didn't figure it out. Thanks

Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 30-Inch

Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 30-InchStrong and stylish construction. Easy to install. Better than marineland's led because it's bulb can be replaced or upgraded. Daylight feature is nice and bright with just one bulb and the moonglow option is a nice feature, something marineland does not have. Overall, excellent purchase of a aqueon product.

I ordered this along with an extra daylight bulb and a "colormax" bulb.

So far I couldn't be happier. Easy to set up with the extra lights, fits well on the tank, bright as hell. It's hard to make a direct before-and-after comparison because my fluorescent fixture died a while ago and I've been using a single incandescent plant growing bulb while waiting for this to show up. I can say that it's MUCH better than a single 60w plant incandescent bulb, for whatever that testimony is worth.

The moonlight feature is pretty cool. I had been using a blue LED bubble strip as a night-light of sorts, but I'll likely unplug that and use the moonlight function on this light instead. It's much more diffused and less abrasive than what I had.

Best aquarium light I ever had! Makes my tank stand out and look clear! High intensity light really brings out your fish colors.

Want Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 30-Inch Discount?

I was setting up a new 29 gallon aquarium for the kids in the living room and I didn't want to go with the traditional light fixture that uses fluorescent tubes since I wanted something more energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. I started looking at LED light fixtures and found that most of the ones available were still expensive and priced out of my budget. To that end, I was going to purchase the Marineland Single Bright LED Lighting System, but then when I saw Aqueon had a modular LED light fixture. After considerable research, I went with the one from Aqueon for the following reasons:

Pros:

+ Modular design; allows you to expand up to two additional LED strips for a total of three.

+ Cost; Affordable compared to other brands which costs at least 1.5 2x or even more.

+ Sleek, stylish, and clean contemporary design without much weight.

Cons:

"Moon Glow" accent or mode is powered by just two blue LEDs and can't be controlled independently such as a timer as it is operated on a 3-way power switch (Moon Glow, OFF, and Regular LED mode), unless you modify it as some have done.

The illumination and light penetration from the Aqueon LED light fixture is bright, on a 29 gallon tank (30.3" x 12.5" x 18.8"). While I am not using any "live" plants (for now), based on my research, the single LED light fixture is apparently sufficient for those who are planning to have low-light plants. You can always supplement the fixture with additional LED strips thanks to the modular design of the fixture.

Note: I have uploaded several photos on the LED light fixture as it pertains to my setup.

biOrb Silk Plant Pack Medium, Green/Green, 2 PackThese plants are great but are too big for the Baby Biorbs. It says so on the packaging; wish it had been in the product description.

I really love how my 8 gallon BiOrb looks with these two plants added. Right now I only have one (spoiled) Beta in the tank. These are by far my favorite fake plants. My discus love to hide under the big leaf plant. I wouldn't say they look 100% real but they aren't obvious fakes like others I've seen. The ball on the bottom does a great job of weighting the plant down and is easy to bury in the rocks.

K&H 8001 Thermo-Pond 3.0 Floating Pond 100-Watt De-Icer

K&H 8001 Thermo-Pond 3.0 Floating Pond 100-Watt De-IcerI've used this for one season, in the Washington, DC area. We don't have a lot of cold weather, but we get down to 0 degrees occasionally. In a small pond with a rubber liner, I was concerned about a "toaster element" heater melting the liner. This heater kept a perfect round hole in the ice even when it got to 3 inches thick and the fish seemed to enjoy spending time under it. The trick with this thing seems to be that while it has a very large surface area (it's about 12 inches across) it has a small air hole at the top. This apparently lets out all the toxic gases, but manages to keep enough heat in to keep the full circle ice free. There's never any sense that the device is hot, but it always just floats freely with a quarter inch gap between it and the ice. I don't actually know for sure, but I suspect that it will work fine to considerably lower temps (they say they tested in -30 degree Wisconsin) and I'm sure it's not dependent on the size of the pond. That is, it won't freeze even if the pond is bigger. However, you might need additional units to handle extra gas from a larger pond. All in all, a very well constructed, simple, safe and satisfactory device.

my family went through 6 of these over the last 3 years! seemed like a great idea..worked ok for about 2 -3 weeks, then they ALL leaked in water, tipped sideways or sunk and did not work well at all. HAd to return them all. seems are not sealed properly. finally gave up on them when manufacturer admitted they'd had nothing but complaints from almost everyone they sold them to. unless they can guarantee they've found and fixed the problem, I would NOT recommend it!

Buy K&H 8001 Thermo-Pond 3.0 Floating Pond 100-Watt De-Icer Now

Overall I like the Thermopond and I'm going to try another one. It worked great for 3.5 years and has a long power cord. The company does honor their warranty and has fast turn around. The current temp is +5F so I need to do something fast. The modes of failure described elsewhere do seem to be common I've experienced both myself. From just failing to turn on to taking on water and sinking. When it it works it works great.

I purchased my first one back in 2005 and it worked fine the first year, but the next year it didn't even turn on. The company quickly and without hassle sent me a replacement. The second unit had been working like a charm since 2006... It started working fine this season and then around Christmas 2009 the GFCI popped. I went out and noticed that the thermopond was listing to one side and semi-submerged. It was full of water and the plastic on the underside was deformed and puffed out.

I live in northern Vermont. Thermopond has kept a hole all winter no matter what the temp is (-10F a few years ago). The ice depth was ~10 inches last year and I could see down through the thermopond to the bottom of the pond. I pull it up to check on the fish and they swim over to see me through the hole. I also have a small winter pump (650gph) running as a homemade bubbler. The pump keeps a hole in the ice down to +15F (lower when there's a lot of snow holding the ground temp in). The two manage to keep a very large (25%) opening when the temps are in the upper 20's and mid-30's. My pond is about 2000 gals (3100gph summer pump). I also put out a whip a few years ago to hold the cord up out of the water and keep the thermopond from drifting around in the wind.

Thermopond works, just be prepared to buy a new one every 3 or 4 years ($14 per year). Weigh that with a lower electric bill and this does seem to be a good deal. I'm hoping they've improved the design since I last bought it.

I have a 220 gallon backyard pond, and live in Chicago. I used to use pumps to agitate the water and keep an open spot that way, but the small size pumps I used were not all that durable. I bought this de-icer for less then the price of a 300 GPH pump. I did read all the reviews, and some said the de-icer was not as durable as it should be, but most of those reviews were from a couple years back so I am thinking they have improved it.

This de-icer has maintained a small opening in the ice all Winter. The temperature has dropped down to single digits for brief periods as well as some spells in the teens.

This product meets my needs quite well. Next Winter I will buy another one and save it as a back up de-icer and consider it insurance.

Aquatop Aquarium Air Driven Internal Corner Filter

Aquatop Aquarium Air Driven Internal Corner FilterI purchased this from TruAqua because the shipping time on Amazon was weeks. Anyway, I think this is a good low-tech filter but better for 10 gal and up. I have a 7 gal and the size of the filter and its bubble are a little big for my tank. I like that it come with good media (I replaced the black foam with white because I don't want any carbon filtration) and it's easy to do. The top comes off easily but not sure if I can open the partition that has the gravel and ceramic. I haven't really tried yet for concern about breaking the plastic. It seems sturdy, and I like that the outflow is adjustable. Just wish there was a way to make finer bubbles.

There are so many power filters out there that people forget about good old air driven filters. This one works very well and does not suck up young fry.

Tetra Whisper In-Tank Filter 40I with BioScrubber, 20 to 40-Gallon

Tetra Whisper In-Tank Filter 40I with BioScrubber, 20 to 40-GallonI own 7 pet turtles. I have two red-eared sliders, four mud turtles and one map turtle. I use the Whisper 40i filters in all my turtle tanks. After trying several different types of filters (ie Zoo Med 501 and Reptofilter) for my turtle tanks, I have found that these work the best and are the easiest to use.

First of all, they do keep the water clean as long as you change the filter media regularly. How often it needs to be changed depends on the type of animal, or in my case turtle, that you own. It also depends on the amount of water in your habitat and other factors. The replacement media is fast to change and more inexpensive than the replacements for other turtle filters I've used.

The filter can be either hung on the side of the tank or completely suction cupped to the side. For functionality, I have found that tanks with shallow water do better with the filter sitting on the bottom of the tank and attached to the wall. Also, pets that are more likely to knock the filter down should have it attached to the wall instead of hung. When it falls in the water, the tank can become very dirty within a matter of hours. My sliders kept knocking one in the water and now the motor does not seem to work as well as it once did.

Make sure that your tank will have at least 4 inches of water in it or this filter will not work for you.

Overall, a solid product!

Had to buy 2 of these within 2 years, they don't hold up long enough for the price you have to pay, motor quit, it should last longer than what it does.

Purchased 2 units--One each for 30gal. & 20gal. tank. No problem getting oversized units. Only problem occurs when mounting in tank where water level is at top. Used a small piece of wood to mount properly; however, as filter accumulates material, the filter starts to splatter some water. The 40i should have been designed with a cover to prevent this. I have simply placed a small refrigerator storage container over the filter top, and this seems to be the effective solution. Note that the filter is extremely quiet. I am continuing the use of air pumps in those aquaria.

These pumps appear to work, but they make more noise than my hang-on-back filters.

I put two of these in two side-by-side 20 gallon aquariums. They are in my bedroom and at night, as well as day, I can hear the water gurgling. I fixed the problem by bending the filter cartridge back a little to overlap the water hole. That silenced them enough to live with. They still hum fairly loudly. I may sell one and get another Top-Fin 30 and keep the other as an emergency backup. I won't be buying any more.

I bought this filter to go into a turtle tank. The design suggested that it would be suitable for this application. I have also had good experiences with other Whisper filters I've owned in the past. I have not been putting up with it for about 1.5-2 months. I loath this filther. First, the suctions cups don't stay on so the filter continuously falls into the tank. There should also be at least 4 suction cups. Having 2 placed in the center of the filter means it rocks back and forth and is not secure. Second, the bracket you can use in place of the top suction cup doesn't fit on the lip of my tank. So again, it keeps falling into the tank. If I can't return it because it's been used I may actually just throw it away. If you're looking for a good internal filter check out Ovation or Fluval. Don't waste your money on this one.
