The strongest pump for the lowest energy usage and price. I use one pump for both my 40gal aquariums. It out performs the standard pumps sold at most pet and tropical fish stores, but a little noisier too. Any air pump is too noisy so I've always mounted them in the attic or outside with a long airline to connect to the tanks.

Little Giant 566535 Air Pump

This is not an inexpensive product, as aquarium air pumps go. I paid about $50 for it including shipping. It was the only pump I could find that I could attach an inlet tube to, in order to draw aquarium air from outside (I had lost my favorite fish to indoor air pollution when a floor was refinished). When new, the air output was adequate, but barely so. As time went by, this declined, until after 15 months air was barely dribbling out of the airstones. I thought the small foam filter at the outlet might be plugged, but removing it entirely did not improve performance. I then measured the output pressure with a gauge. It registered zero. In contrast, 3 Tetra air pumps I had that were much older (and cheaper) measured 0.75, 1.1, and 2.1 psi. I have figured out how to add an inlet tube to one of the Tetra pumps, and will go that route. Since the Little (VERY Little) Giant cannot be opened up to be serviced, it is now basically junk. There's a good grounded power cord I can salvage from it, but that's about it. My advice: don't buy this pump.

We have a small pond, a fountain really (~40 gal), with a number of gold fish in it and wanted to help them winter over. Got this pump to use as a "bubbler" (submerged) in combination with a 100w heater. When it's thawed here we see our fish still moving, albeit slowly, so it's worked well for our needs.

All of the pond advice says to have a pond heater/de-icer and aeration to maintain a hole in the ice for the fish. I live in Minnesota. Currently the temperature is -9 F with a predicted high of -3 and the wind chill is approaching -30 F. This is supposed to last for a few days...

The de-icer is frozen in the pond, but the Little Giant submerged about 2 feet in the pond is blowing air and the ice has still has not completely frozen over above it. While I will not know if the fish make it until spring, I am completely satisfied with this air pump and next year, I will not be using the de-icing heater all I would take it out now, but it is frozen in place until the ice thaws.

When I set up the pump, I submerged it in the water and ran the air line under the deck near the house. I even placed a plastic cup around the open end of the air line to make sure no debris would clog the opening. This seems to be the key to operation in extreme cold temperatures: submerge the pump and protect the air line intake opening.

I bought this pump in 2011 and used it out of the water to pump air into my pond. The line froze during the winter of 2011 so in 2012 I put the pump in the water (this is an option per the pump instructions). Now the pump doesn't work at all. I can't see a way to take the pump apart and try to repair it. I can't find a way to contact the company directly...

Bought this to make compost tea in a 5 gallon bucket. I might have a defective unit because it won't make bubbles unless the end of the tubing is less than 1/2 inch from water surface. I noticed on the pump it has only 2.5 psi.

What I like about this pump:

Not too loud. I currently have the pump running some sponge filters in my bedroom tanks. My wife and I haven't had any difficulties sleeping.

Solid Construction:

I took my pump apart and had a look at what was inside. The design is simple and made with solid components that are built to last. The casing is of durable and thick plastic. The diaphragm will unavoidably wear out but instead of throwing away the whole pump like you would with cheaper units you can buy a replacement diaphragm (that includes 1 or 2 air filters). I've had my pump for about two years and am confident that it will last many many more years to come (provided that I replace the diaphragm and air filter as needed).

Adjustable rheostat:

The rheostat adjusts the output of air by controlling the amount of electricity that powers the pump as opposed to using an inline valve on the air hose. The use of a rheostat conserves electrictiy and avoids putting unnecessary strain on the diaphragm and the premature failure that would result.

Versatility:

With 7.0 PSI I've been able to make a variety of different set ups that otherwise would have required at least 3 lesser pumps. Having one pump instead of several reduces a clutter of hoses.

Overall I'm very happy with this pump. I wish it wasn't so expensive. But then again, when you look at the long term, it's not too expensive.

This was so noisy, that after making a video of it compared to the Tetra Wisper 60, and the Rena 400, I returned it. It also didn't move as much air as the other two pumps. Which pump (much to my surprise) was the quietest? The inexpensive Tetra Whisper 60.

I have a 70 gallon tank with a 43" Marine Land bubble stick burried at the very buttom under about 1-1/2" of gravel/rock.

I've had many air pumps from whisper to tetra to well to make it short I'll never buy another, these have apparently been around for 30+ years and keep on pumping. This toy is a great idea, and it might work if you taunt your cat with it, but it wasn't so great for me to leave it for my cat to play with alone. I had to throw it away because I was afraid Chester would swallow the straw.

A poor execution of a great idea and at this price, it's too expensive for a temporary cat toy. I give it high marks for the giant predator eyes that it solicited from Chester but low marks for durability.

SF1 Submersible Flat Box Filter

I'm giving this product 5 stars for one reason and one reason only, to make up for the people who can't be bother to read the actual product descriptions before they make purchases and then give the products one star. I figure that if I give it 5, the it will average off to 3 stars to offset their ignorance. If the actual product description is read, nowhere does it state that a pump is included. The description lists what is included, and adapters for various pumps are listed, it even tells you what gph pumps to use it with but it never states that a pump is included. Yes, a few of the pictures show a pump, illustrating how the filter should be plumbed together, yet these same illustrations show rocks, grass, a pond and trees and I wouldn't expect any of that to be included, so why would I expect anything else that the product description specifically does not state is included to be included? I wouldn't, but then again I am moderately intelligent (or at least not completely stupid), so I read descriptions, and if I'm not sure about a product, I may even google it and read manufacturers descriptions, other sellers descriptions and other websites reviews before I make a purchase. I've been know to visit a local store that carries the product to actually look at it up close before making a purchase. I think it's called being an "informed consumer". There is no excuse for giving a product a low rating for not including something if you are too lazy to actually read the description of that product to see if it is included.

The product is actually about a three star item. It is reasonably well made, but all plastic can break if care is not taken, and when removing the cover to clean the filter, care needs to be taken or the tabs can break. As for the reviews complaining about the foam filter deteriorating too fast, don't try to wash it out by putting your hose sprayer at full strength and it will last much longer, simply take reasonable care when washing it out and it will last a long time, the more gently you treat the foam the longer it will last. If however you handle it roughly, it won't be long before the foam needs replacement and the plastic tabs are broken.

It is a decent product, not a great one. I'd give it four stars normally, since it is a good product that does what it claims to quite well when reasonable care is taken cleaning it.

I'm sorry about the rant, I let the one star reviewer get under my skin, I'm just sick of seeing products slammed because of ignorant and lazy people.

I was looking for something to remove all of the sediment from my small pond and would attach to my pump. I had been using a home-made filter made from a small bucket filled with lava rock; very difficult to clean. The SF1 kit installed in minutes and is very easy to clean. Now I can see to bottm of the pond and the fish seem happier, lol.

First off This filter wants to float a little I put a rock in mine under the foam insert this fixed the issue. You can probably use gravel or a rock on top or Partially bury it under rocks or wedge it under or agents something. Other than that I own one of these box filters in my pond works great the foam insert is easy to clean off with a hose. This is just the filter not the pump altho i have a tetra pump that works in great cobonation with the filter.

Re: the review above. The blue color you were unhappy with is called actinic. It's meant to simulate the light at depth on a coral reef. These bulbs weren't intended for freshwater aquariums--saltwater fish do just fine with the blue light, and these bulbs are a relatively inexpensive way to get good reef lighting for a small tank.

While the bulb is awesome(Im currently using it on 6 different tanks),this company is something else entirely. I placed an order with them on a Saturday,with it saying there were plenty in stock,and after waiting untill Wednesday of the following week with no ship date(I expidited my order),I began to wonder if they were ever going to send it out. I purchased for my ten gallon saltwater tank with and incandescent hood. The bulbs fit perfect and the light is great. What an easy way to get 40 watts of lighting. Now I am looking forward to see how coral will do under these lights. As far as growing fresh water plants in a ten gallon tank, and using an incandescent hood, go to Walmart and buy some 10W full spectrum mini compacts for less than 6 bucks each.

Universal Rocks 48-Inch by 20-Inch Rocky Flexible Aquarium Background

First of all, the "clips" that come with the background are just rings of plastic. They were very difficult to force over the edge of my tank and once there, the rubber background easily slid out from under them. In case it isn't clear from the other descriptions, yes, this product is made of rubber, and another interesting thing about it is that it floats. It is in fact *so* flexible that it bows in the middle from trying to float. The packaging says that it can be siliconed in, what they mean is, it *must* be siliconed in. It says that you can keep it in place using clips and gravel. I have three inches of gravel at the bottom of the tank, but after trying to wrestle this thing against the glass for the better part of half an hour, I'd say that I'd need at least 7-8 inches of gravel and several large, heavy rocks to keep it forced back flush with the glass.

So, here's some installation instructions based on real-life use:

#1get some aquarium grade silicone. I don't know how much you're going to need, but guessing by how rippled/pitted the backing is, my guess would be: a lot. I'm also going to need silicone to plug up some holesmine had about 6 pea-sized holes in it, and I don't want my guppies swimming through them and getting trapped behind the background. Speaking of which-

#2don't buy fish until this thing is installed. If you're thinking of installing it in a tank full of water, I hope you have waterproof flooring because it's gonna be messy. Every time I try to push the background back up against the back of the tank, all the water behind rubber sheet takes the path of least resistanceup, out, and onto the floor. Then, the background falls off the edge again as soon as I let go of it. Right now, it's sitting in a slouched mess in my tank as I try to find 55 gallons worth of clean buckets to-

#3drain the tank. You're going to need to take the tank down, empty the decorations and gravel, thoroughly dry it, and lay it on it's back. I haven't gotten this far yet, but I anticipate trouble. My lid had a bar down the middle, so I will need to bend the background to get it laying in the tank, meaning the silicone will need to go between the background and the glass after the background is already in the tank. Then weight the background down so it doesn't move, wait 48 hours for the silicone to cure, rinse the whole thing out (somehow..... the tank is wider than my shower and it's 20 degrees outside.) Not sure where I'm going to put the fish in the meantime, but I'm sure I'll think of something. Gotta say, tearing down, storing, and rebuilding an entire 55 gallon tank is not what I had in mind when I read that it was "easy to install."

In short, if you're sitting in your house with a dry, empty tank, wondering if this would be a good accessory, go for it. It looks pretty good for what it is. If you're looking for a nice background for a tank that already has water and/or fish, I'd give this one a pass.

Edit: altered my review up from two to four stars because, after I drained the tank, filled a spare 10 gallon for the fish, cut the background to shape, siliconed it in place, waited two days for the silicone to cure, and refilled the tank, it looks *spectacular.* It looks like real stone and I'm really happy with it. It's a very hard install, though.

I do recommending using GE silicon 1 or 2 to adhere it to the tank, the clips are only good for probably in a reptile enclosure. It does look good in my 75 gallon aquarium. When I got it I used some large sheers or tin cutters to trim it, then placed it in tank, and on the outside glass I circled where it made contact with the glass so I knew where to put the silicon along with around the edges.

It came in a humungous box that was quite humerous, but it did protect the background and there were no issues upon arrival. The background was received as described and looks very cool. Cannot wait to give it to my husband for his new fish tank this Christmas.

Got this with the assumption that there would be magnets to attach this to the glass to keep it from moving. It came with only a few little plastic clips which were basically a section of plastic tubing with a slit in it. The background looks great if you can keep it secure. I use driftwood and some rocks to try to keep it pressed up against the back wall of the tank. This would be great if you wanted to silicone it to the tank glass.

Arrived in record time! Ordered it on a Tuesday, received it on Thursday. Came well packaged and as shown in the advertisement. I had been debating buying one of these for a looong time. I had looked at every company that makes them, DIY versions and pretty much every possible route to go for my 75gal. Universal Rocks stood out for me. They are well made, durable and easy to install. The clips provided may seem low-tech, but the idea is to have this panel rest against the back wall, under the lip of the aquarium. I recommend going to Universal Rock's site as they have a whole section on using the clips, installing and placement. I did this while doing a normal H2O change only I completely emptied the tank of decorations and plants. Gravel vac'd thoroughly and installed with my stock of 20 cichlids still in the tank. Scrubbed it completely first and put it in. Sank right out of the box and bent around the center brace with total ease. At first it was approximately 1/4" too tall for the tank. I removed it and using kitchen sheers (very tough and tedious and I would recommend tin snips for the job) I trimmed the bottom of the background. Fits like a glove! Clips went in place no problem and looks awesome! I would not hesitate to purchase anything with Universal Rock's name on it. I contacted them directly with several questions and received excellent, quick responses every time. If you have a particular question that is holding you back from purchasing, ask them and they will resolve any doubts. This really makes me proud of my tank. Looks awesome, is durable and will make any tank a showpiece. Will definitely be purchasing another for my other 55gal tank as well. 100% SATISFIED!!!!

I bought 1 bag of these to accent a bottom covered with the polished river rock from the same company. The cobination is nicer than I could have imagined, and 1 bag was adeguate to provide just the right amount of size variation. Really looks like the bottom of a creek/stream.

i bought these to engrave names on for kids in my daughters class as a graduation present from pre-k. they worked great for that but a few months later i saw a larger bag of rocks almost the same exact thing at the dollar store. I guess if you need this exact color or if you need to be sure you can get the same thing again in the future these would be the way to go but i would shop around first due to price
