Aquarius Aq15005 Aquarius 5 Rounded 5-Gallon Aquarium Kit

Aquarius Aq15005 Aquarius 5 Rounded 5-Gallon Aquarium KitI have three of these for breeding ornamental shrimp. Got them for a great deal with a local fish store went under a little while ago. I notice there is no review, so here is my opinion.....

The tank:

The "Panaview" idea is a bit false. Because of the hard curve on the corners, it can be very difficult to see what is happening at the edges of the tank, a few inches from the acrylic. That said, for the most part, the flat front leads to clear views of what is inside, and if my shrimp are close to the wall, I can see them whether they are behind the curve or not.

The lid fits into a pair of hinges, but doesn't actually snap in. Makes it very easy to open, leave open, close, and best of all, remove easily for water changes and prevent it from overbalancing backward when aquarium is empty.

The one drawback to the lid is that there is enough room to hook the little hook for holding the filter over the back, and that's about it, unless you're going to do some modifying. Honestly, getting the cord for the heater I use through is a snug fit. This is good for, say, crabs, crayfish, and stronger shrimp that may attempt to go on 'walkabout', but it doesn't allow a lot of space to add additional items such as a sponge filter, airstone, etc. Without the filter in place, I can *just* fit a single airline and the heater cord through the hole. On the one single tank that I use all three, I have simply drilled an additional hole in the lid for the airline. Easy breezy--if you have a drill. That said, I don't anticipate most people attempting to add additional stuff beyond perhaps a filter. Keep in mind, I use it for invertebrates that can climb out--I have dwarf crays in one, and mini-crabs in with my cherry shrimp. If you have nothing that you're worried about getting out, there is a cut-out option for a HOB (hang on back) filter and heater (don't use an HOB heater on this, please! But they will leave large holes, and they don't, honestly, look very easy to remove. The tabs that hold the cutouts in place look quite strong. I have never attempted to remove them, and I can't imagine that I ever will. For my purposes, if I need an extra airline fed in, I'm just going to drill a tight fitting hole, which I suspect is less work anyway.

The lighting:

Their is a bank of nine white LED lights, and nine blue ones. They can be set to have either the white, the blue, or both in place. The light level is enough for lower light plants, such as java moss, java fern, dwarf lily, or most hygrophilia, but if you're thinking of making a nano or pico tank, you'll need to work on the lighting. (If you don't know what I'm talking about there, it's honestly not a concern....though....look it up, as it's a very fun hobby! XD)

I don't think that this tank is terribly aesthetic without the lid it comes with, as it has a lip similar to that on the critter keepers....I honestly don't know how to explain it, but basically, it's a hollow lip that I can fit my fingertips under. Looks better hidden.

The Filter;

I admit to not using this in any of my tanks, but for one. It is a submerged filter, with an open top, and decent sized intake vents. The water flow is also surprisingly strong from it. All said, it would be perfect for a betta (providing it's still hale and healthy...a weak or very old betta may get sucked up against the intake), or other smaller fish. Not so good with my mini-shrimp and other inverts that I keep in here. The entire design is quite open, and shrimp climbing in for the delicious detritus on the insert only to be sucked through the impeller is an all too realistic reality. Not to say that I haven't found use for these, however!!! I keep them in my tank of pre-aged, pre-cycled water that I use for tank changes, and use them for quiet and decent water movement to prevent stagnation. Generally, I've been using them more as a micro-powerhead than a filter. XD I've been pleased, as so far, they all continue to move water rapidly and well, but then, they also aren't really contending with any serious bioload--just that of a few cory's that tool around and help the water I use for water changes in my more delicate tanks age and get it matched perfectly, chemistry wise.

That's about it to this tank. Not a super high tech little setup, but if you're planning on keeping a few smaller, cool water fish (ie: white clouds), it'll work. Better yet, get yourself a sponge filter, a heater, and some shrimp! Not that I'm biased or anything. LOL

A random side note NOT related to this product, but very much related to fish keeping:

If you decide to keep A FEW small, tropical fish and pick up a heater....pick up a good one. Read the reviews. Heaters can kill your fish very quickly if they fail, not to mention cheap ones present a fire hazard. I state this because I once had a cheap hang on back heater literally melt through the wall of one of these tanks when it failed, to much loss of life, very sadly.. You get what you pay for!

We decided to get a few fish and a small tank for our son for his 10th birthday and it has been everything we haoped it would for him and this tank has helped make it a great gift. The tank is small enough to fit on a dresser top, has a lighted cover, very clear plastic for viewing, and comes with a little filter so you have a wider option of fish you can house.

The first few weeks I had been complaining that the included filter was underpowered and didn't seem to be doing a good job keeping the tank clean, but I have since learned that the rocks I chose were the key problem and were effetively locking the gunk down in the bottom and it wasn't the filter's fault at all. I was using the larger decor rocks that are upwards of .75" each. Advice to those buying this tank, use the typical small rocks that come in the 2.5# bags and lok look large chunk kitty litter, that will be more accomodating with this filter.

I was really pleasantly surprised when I unpacked and set up this aquarium. Very easy! It's just the right size for smaller fish and looks great on a desk...or anywhere! The filter works very well and the lighting is nice. Highly recommend.

Update Aug. 30: Still highly pleased with the tank. Everything still works and the water is staying nice & clean with the included filter. Very happy!

Update: Oct. 24, 2012: Still really like the aquarium, but the on/off switch for the lights stopped working...the lights will only stay on...I have unplugged the light, which is fine as I have African-clawed frogs in the aquarium and they don't need extra lighting.

I don't understand all the good reviews for this tank! Besides that it was inexpensive, and the lights are fine, there is nothing good to say about it. The hood was beyond bizarre -the big filter thing that you have to hang over the back of the tank and into the inside can't be installed until you CUT OUT a big chunk of the hood... why isn't it designed with a piece that simply lifts out??? The piece you cut out is made to be cut out (??) but I had to use a sturdy serrated knife to do it, and I'm really lucky I didn't get severely injured in the process. The filter itself doesn't hang at the proper angle, so I have a children's book wedged between the motor of the filter and the outside of the tank. Lovely. And the filter has a constant loud hum... makes me realize just how quiet (silent, in fact) my old tank filter was (i had a small Aqueon tank). I have to return this, I guess, what a pain! You get what you pay for, in this case.

Want Aquarius Aq15005 Aquarius 5 Rounded 5-Gallon Aquarium Kit Discount?

I love the tank. It's a perfect fit to go right on top of my dresser. The lights look really good as well. There was a small crack where the lights are, but nothing worth fussing over. It still works perfectly fine. The filter was working great while I had it running, unfortunately it's too strong for my poor little beta fish. Betta's don't like currents as it is, so I think I'm going to switch over to a sponge filter. But besides that the product id great with an unbeatable price! (:

Lee's 20L/29/26S Original Undergravel Filter, 12-Inch by 30-Inch or 10-Inch by 36-Inch

Lee's 20L/29/26S Original Undergravel Filter, 12-Inch by 30-Inch or 10-Inch by 36-InchI've had fish tanks for over 25 years, except for the past 6 years. For Christmas I purchase a new 37 gallon tank. I have always used an undergravel filter as a second filter with my other tanks in the past. I have never had a problem with maintenance or anything. I purchase this filter, but when I assembled it the flow tubes were way to short for my new tank. "No problem," I thought, I'll just pick up some tube and cut it to the link I need. After all, I've done this before. I went to 4 pet stores (1 being an aquarium store), plus looked online, with no luck finding more tubes. I was told that undergravel filters are outdated and almost never used anymore. So I can not use the filter. I sold it on Ebay and because it was a great price on Amazon, I made my money back.

The filter was good, easy to assemble. It probably would have been a good filter if I could have used it.

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Seaflor Fiji Pink Reef Sand 40Lb

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Seaflor Fiji Pink Reef Sand 40LbI think the picture is deceiving as the pink in this picture gives the illusion that the sand has a pink hue to it. It does not, in fact on my first review I thought it was just argonite. There are purplish pink shell fragments mixed within. They are so miniscule I had to hold the argonite directly under my reef lights to see it. The price and product were great I just think a more honest representation of the product is warrented.

I was upset at first, but realized the one they sent me was pretty cool too. It is really colorful and really well made and looks great in my tank! I didn't contact the seller about the product, so I can't say whether or not they would have sent me the right replica instead.

Eheim - Jager 9" 50 Watt submersible heater

Eheim - Jager 9' 50 Watt submersible heaterI can't say I have this exact model, but I do have an Ebo-Jager 50 watt heater that is about 15 years old and still as functional and accurate as ever. I have it set to 5.5 on the dial and it keeps my 5gal at a constant 80 degrees F. The on/off light is clearly visible. I would highly highly recommend this brand for its accuracy, consistency, and durability.

I had two other heaters before this and neither one kept tank temp constant. This one keeps it within a degree or two all the time.

Lee`s Aquarium Betta Hex Dual

Lee`s Aquarium Betta Hex DualJust because a Betta can survive in small conditions because in their natural environment during the drought season doesn't mean that we should keep them in those conditions. Many Bettas don't survive these rough conditions that nature provides in their home territory. If you buy small cups and throw a fish in themyou are just condemning them to solitary confinement in a prison cell. My Betta is in a 10 gallon tank and you wouldn't believe the fun he has exercising and playing in all that space. If you careyou would never subject this beautiful creature to cups of water if you saw them in gallons of HEATED (they are tropical fish) water!!!!!! Study this fish and you will understand that we take for granted their survival mechanisms and exploit them for our own foolish pleasure.

Too small. Bettas need at least a gallon size tank.

I would never force a betta to live in that small of a tank, let alone two.

Buy Lee`s Aquarium Betta Hex Dual Now

note before my review: Yea ok, so everyone QQing over this needs to just think about it from a breeders standpoint...I jar my bettas in quart mason jars. The males anyways. I do not see how this is any different. The ONLY downside and I mean ONLY, is that the divider is not a solid color, preventing the males from seeing each other. Is this meant for keeping a betta forever and ever as a HOME? No...But as a breeding standpoint, it is fine. If you are stupid enough to think a breeder would have a gallon-per-male, you are wrong. It is more cost and space efficient for mason jars, beanie baby boxes, or these small acrylic breeders.

So.........if you dont like it because it is "cruel", dont write a review. Reviews are only helpful if you point out flaws in construction, pricing, etc. Your opinion means jack from a consumer standpoint.

I rate this product a 4, and that is because the divider is NOT a solid color. Bi-weekly water changes are suggested and this setup is NOT suggested for long-term use.

TrueLumen 12-Inch TrueLumen Pro LED Strip Light, Marine Fusion 12K White/Actinic Blue Combo with Ca

TrueLumen 12-Inch TrueLumen Pro LED Strip Light, Marine Fusion 12K White/Actinic Blue Combo with Canopy BracketsI saw these in a pet store when I went to get a few more fish and loved the color of the lights and how great the tanks looked. I had to purchase 2 12" and put them together slightly overlapping in the middle to fit my tank hood as the 24" was 2" too big. They were super easy to setup and I was able to use the hood from the tank kit to hook them up into using the supplied screws and brackets.

The lights barely get hot and are very powerful. I could have gotten away with one but having the two let me get the light to be edge to edge on the tank. They illuminate all the way to the bottom with no problem. I did find that the cables on each could have been a bit longer so I can hide them behind the tank better. They are a little short for my liking. I did have to purchase the splitter to connect the two strips to one power transformer. Although everything I purchased added up quickly and became expensive, I have already noticed a huge difference in the overall quality of my tank. ( i have uploaded photos and descriptions).

I'm very happy with these LED strip lights and hope that they last as long as they claim. The startup costs are a little high but you will be very happy with the lighting!

This light is amazing. At first I didn't think I was going to like it but after about 10 min. I was wrong. I have this on my 10gal nano reef. I have a Duncan coral that was just a little frag when I got this light but now is growing more heads and is very large. I am thinking of buying one more light. I would recommend this light to everyone. Well built very bright.

AquaClear 20 Foam

AquaClear 20 FoamThese must do some good since every time I take it out, it is full of goop. I can usually do a rinse out for one time but the next time I replace it. I like buying the three pack since it is less expensive and more convenient to have a couple extra on hand when I'm doing a water change. This single pack doesn't seem worth it since the three pack runs about $5.

I like the Aqua Clear filter overall and think that for a smaller filter, they've done a good job in creating the best environment for keeping your fish healthy and your tank clean.

Not enough info!!!

For the price I expected more than a single foam filter per box. When a box or package is offered, please state what in contains in pcs or parts

Zoo Med African Mopani Wood, Medium (Sizes May Vary)

Zoo Med African Mopani Wood, MediumNo local shops carry this wood, and after searching online for some for our two fish tanks we ran across these at a great price. They shipped quick, and are very nice looking in the tanks. Our pleco's love them, as well as the cat fish like to hide underneath them, after we propped one side up with some rocks.

To remove a lot of the tannin, clean the sink out, and place wood in sink. Boil water enough to cover the wood, let sit until water cools. Repeat this a few times until the water is mostly clear after cooling.

I ordered the Zoo Med Mopani wood in size medium from Entirely Pets. It was supposed to be 10-12" long, but when it came it was 20" long! I will have to saw it in half to fit my tank. No fault on Entirely Pets part as the tag put there by Zoo Med said size medium. Since the photo that accompanies this item is always the same, I thought I'd tell you what mine looks like. It is orange tone on top and chocolate on the bottom. The width varies from 2 1/2" to 4" and the top is rounded with a flat, almost hollowed-out bottom. So, if you wanted to angle it across your aquarium from the top, you'd probably want to keep the back to the back of the tank. There is a nice knot at one end of the main root and two smaller roots crossing at the other. There are plenty of small holes and protuberances for fish, snails, and freshwater shrimp to explore for food.

I can't speak to the leaching part, because I haven't placed it in the tank yet.

Much, much later: boil the heck out of this for two hours and then soak for weeks to get the tannins mostly out or it will stain your water whiskey brown and maybe lower the pH a bit. If you have an open top aquaria and let some of the wood stick out you will notice that the wood in the water actually gets a lot less orange than that part sticking out of the water. Do not let wood stick out of water if you have a hood. The humidity causes fuzzy mold problems on the wood. Do not use in brackish water tanks as mine rotted within two weeks in one. It really stunk up the tank for weeks then (boggy smell).

Buy Zoo Med African Mopani Wood, Medium (Sizes May Vary) Now

I am getting ready to buy three more pieces of this mopani wood for my new tank. I purchased a small piece for my firzt tank, a ten gallon, and I was very pleased. I was nervous buying online because I could not choose the shape, but I think that because this is a real piece of wood, no matter what it is going to look natural, because, well, it's nature!! The colors are beautiful, copper and red, to light and dark brown. I had read that mopani wood wouldn't rot like driftwood, but would leach color into the tank and while it wouldn't be bad for the fish, could be displeasing to look at. Not wanting to deal with tinted water for weeks, and not wanting to wait weeks to soak it outside my tank, I decided to boil my wood. I boiled my piece for about an hour and a half, changing the water every fifteen minutes or so. After several water changes, the water was coming out much lighter. There was still a little color in the cooking water when I decided to move the wood into my tank, but I never noticed any difference in my tank water's color so enough must have boiled out at that point. I also noticed that the color seemed enriched after the boiling, but I think this is because I used a gas stove and didn't flip the wood. The bottom of the piece was significantly darker than the rest of the wood, so I think the direct heat from the flame inderneath may have started to burn the tannins or something. I liked how it looked, but you may want to flip yours to prevent this, should you try boiling it. I have not noticed any slime, or pests.... but this could also be from the boiling. Long story short, I suggest boiling. Seems to have a lot of advantages, and I already have a "Fish Pot" laying around from my regular maintanece, so I didn't have to ruin my good cookware. (Not that it would have... I see no staining on the pot) Did I mention that it looks great in my tank with a few stones and plants, and that my fishies love it?

Read Best Reviews of Zoo Med African Mopani Wood, Medium (Sizes May Vary) Here

We bought this for our 50 gallon and its a beautiful piece of hard wood! That being said we did place ours into a big kettle of boiling water turn off the flame and let it steep till cool to remove some of the natural tannins..upon reflection we should have done this at least twice because it did indeed cause our water to have a slight tea colored tinge to it after a couple of weeks. A change of charcole and a %20 water change restored our crystal clear water again, however it is beginnning to look a little tea colored again but not nearly as much. I suspect it will be gone completely after the next change down the road. Placing the wood in the boiling water also has the benefit of sterilizing it as well! I do not regret buying this it is a very interesting addition to our tank.

Perfecto Manufacturing APF33300 Glass Canopy Aquarium, 30-Inch

Perfecto Manufacturing APF33300 Glass Canopy Aquarium, 30-InchThe glass is cut poorly, with chips all along the edge. The plastic hinge doesn't last long (in my book, at least). My last one only lasted a year and a half before it split apart.

Its a great way to cover your aquarium and works just as its supposed to. In my opinion, glass canopies are much better because of the ability of putting two light strips or bigger light strips on the tank. Just be careful because i have broken one of these before. The plastic guard is also great to get more of your tank covered. All in all, it does a great job.

It looks ten times nicer than the reptile lid that I attempted to use before this and it was about the same price (which to me, wasn't that expensive). Great price, great product, great fit. Cascade® Canister Filter Pumps for Fresh & Saltwater Aquariums - UL Listed

Penn Plax Cascade 700 GPH Canister FilterI have a cascade 700 canister in my 40 gallon heavily planted tank and it's a truly wonderful filter. It was easy to set up. It's powerful (all of my plants wave in the currents created by the spray bar and the fish seem to enjoy playing in it). My water is crystal clear and I love that I can put whatever media I want into the filter baskets. Best of all, the filter is really easy to clean: disconnect the hoses, carry the filter to the sink, replace the filter floss, reconnect the hoses, and plug it back in.

Last week one of my shut-off valves started dripping. I e-mailed Penn Plax to ask them where I could buy a new one and they replied to my e-mail within about 2 hours asking for my address and apologizing for the inconvenience. Today a large brown delivery truck arrived with a pair of new filters. I'm overjoyed. This is an awesome company.

I have kept tropical fish for over 30 years. I have tried a lot of equipment over those years, from cheap to expensive. When it comes to filters I have tried cannisters by Eheim, Fluval, Marineland and Penn-Plax. In my opinion, this filter is the best choice. In fact, it is replacing a much praised Eheim 2217. Go on any aquarium forum and you will read a lot of debate about what filter is the best. In the end, Eheim earns the highest praise. Especially the Eheim 22XX series. I bought into the hype and purchased an Eheim 2217 for my 75 gallon aquarium. The Eheim while quiet (silent quiet) quickly lost its ability to create water flow (this is where the Eheim fanatics will talk about "pressure" and "no by-pass" making the Eheim special). The water in my 75 gallon aquarium soon became unacceptable. I decided to look for a supplemental canister filter to support the Eheim 2217 and stumbled upon the Cascade 700.

I thought this filter would simply provide filtering support to the Eheim, but within a week of placing the Cascade in the aquarium, the Eheim's impeller began making noise and the water flow stopped completely. I removed the Eheim determined to repair it, but... the Cascade 700 does a great job keeping the 75 gallon aquarium in tip top shape all by itself! Yes, it is noiser than the Eheim (not nearly enough to be disturbing it's just that Eheim is silent and this filter is barely audible), but it works and it works well. My aquarium has been running solely on the Cascade 700 for 3 months now and it looks fantastic.

If you want to impress the people on tropical fish forums, purchase an Eheim. If you want a reasonably priced filter that out performs the Eheim line in every way, this is the way to go.

I've been using a Penn Plax Cascade 500 for a year in my bowfront 29 gal tank. It's inaudible, a cinch to clean, and it does a great job of filtering the water. And it doesn't leak. I advised my son to get the same filter for his turtle tank but he got a Fluval 105 instead, and it's been nothing but problems. You're supposed to grease the o-ring with special Fluval grease every time you take it apart, and even then it continues to leak. In the end, it's easier to replace the o-ring every time you clean the filter, which is a joke. We're going to trash the Fluval and get another Penn Plax Cascade 500.

This machine is easy to put together, thought the instructions seem a bit overwhelming at first. It had done a great job with my 40 gallon tank and I am using it with for my Turtle and has been very capable at cleaning the water of a usually very messy animal. It is nice and quiet except for the high pressure and flow rate of the output tubing. I merely extend the tubing so that it ends below the water level and the noise of water is considerable reduced. I have only good things to say about this filter after using it for 3 weeks. A solid purchase for sure.

These have so far worked well, without noise. They have good, smooth, quiet output streams. My watt meter says 9 watts instead of the advertised 7 watts, however still far less than the equivalent output of what I had previously (23 watts). So some power savings is in order.

I very much like the magnetic base. I also like the swivel capability so I can place it almost anywhere and I'm not going to have to worry about aging suction cups causing falling pumps.

The one con I have is they are much larger than they appear in the picture.

But still I am happy and would recommend them.

This circulation pump is very quiet. It is adjustable for a tighter stream by turning the outer bezzle. The magnet works great. I would absolutely buy again.
