Marina Power Filter
The fish in my 10 gallon tank did not appreciate the heavy current created by my old Tetra Whisper filter. Sure, the Whisper did an excellent job filtering waste, but it also stressed out the fish. This filter does as good a job filtering waste and eliminating ammonia, and doesn't stress the fish!
I'm giving this filter 5 stars because it is best-in-class for 10-gallon tanks. No other filters provide as sleek a look; no other filters come with a built-in flow regulator (that I can find....), and no other filters have as peaceful a current for my fish, frog, and shrimp.I've had this filter 4 months, and really like it. My tank is viewable from both sides, so the streamlined shape is great hanging on the end. The width (7 in) might not be so great if you are hanging it on the back without a background.
The filter is silent. Not quiet, silent. I have to check for ripples to know if it's on. It comes with an intake sponge, so you don't have to buy one if you have shrimp or fry. The size of the motor and intake (with sponge) inside the tank is about equal to a PennPlax SmallWorld filter I had for a while. I don't think it takes up too much tank space.
It's like a cross between an external HOB and an internal filter. The motor is on the intake and the media is outside. The motor is submerged, so does not have to be primed each time you unplug it. The downside is that it's an electrical motor with wire going into the water, so you should unplug it before you stick your hand in the tank, when you clean etc. The submerged motor means the hang-on-back part is all one piece of plastic, no washers or connections to leak.
Media being on the outside of the tank is easy to replace. I don't use the inserts because I don't want to have carbon in the filter all the time. AquaClear 20 media bags fit easily in the sections. I've used BioMax and carbon, and now have 2 BioMax bags in one section and a cut to size filter pad in the other. Purigen 100 mL fits (barely) but slows the flow.
I believe it's a 55gph filter, which is plenty for my 5.5 gallon. I like that the flow is adjustable. It does not have a lot of surface agitation -I get some protein scum even with it on full. Still, I think it's a great filter and the flexiblity appeals to me. I'd buy it again gladly.

I bought this to replace my Tetra Whisper, which was beginning to whisper rather loudly. Assembly was a little complicated, but maybe I wouldn't have thought so if I hadn't felt hurried because my Tetra had crapped out soon after the Marina S10 arrived.I'm very happy with this, and my only complaint is one I read elsewhere, that the plastic lid rattles and makes a buzzing noise. I simply removed don't use the lid, and the only noise I hear is the gentle flow of the filtered water back into the tank. It does seem to aerate the water much more than the Tetra did as well. Overall, very pleased. A good value. One more thing: This unit takes two filters, and it shipped with two, but one is designed for goldfish ("Bio Clear") and the other for tripical fish ("Bio Carb "). I was glad I ordered extra ones for goldfish so I could place two of those in from the start. I think it would be better if Marina gave you the choice at point of purchase or include two of each. This filter has impressed me and it works like a charm. Quiet and efficient without any problems. i recommend this to anyone!

Don't overuse it.I caught myself overusing it when I bought the large bottle with the pump and after about 2 weeks I noticed it was half way gone and I lost a couple of my saltwater fish not cheap ones either but just read the label and you will be fine and the product works great unless you are the type of person who has a hard time taking time to read directions,Thank you great product.Read Best Reviews of Nutrafin Aqua Plus Water Conditioner Here
I've used this product in my aquarium for years, and all I can say is buy it in bulk and get it online, because you're going to need a steady supply of it for as long as you have fish. This is the best water conditioner on the market for my money.I use this in every water change and evap fill. This is awesome at detoxing the metals from water and softening it as well so hard tap is even safe in salt water tanks.Sunday, May 4, 2014

Penn Plax Cascade 300 GPH Power Filter
One reason I hesitated to invest in this filter is that, although the filter itself is very reasonably priced, the replacement filter cartridges are somewhat expensive. Fortunately, the size of the intake tube is just right to use one of these pre-filters: Pre-Filter Sponge 3 Pack for Fluval Edge Aquarium This increases the biological filtration even more while filtering small particles before they ever enter the filter itself. I simply rinse the pre-filter in aquarium water ever two weeks or so and replace the filter cartridge once a month, since activated carbon expires monthly. Rinsing the pre-filter is an easy step, since this has an extendable intake tube, making it easy to detach the endpiece from the filter itself without having to actually pull the sponge off the intake every time. The filter even continues to run while I do this, as long as the end of the intake is submersed. As an added bonus, my flower shrimp loves to eat the particles of food that collect on the sponge, and as a filter feeder, she enjoys the luxury of hanging on the intake to make use of the flow without the danger of being harmed by the filter intake. Meanwhile, between some tinkering with the flow control and the addition of the sponge, the flow itself is weak enough to not upset my male/female pair of gouramis, who are able to blow bubble nests and engage in spawning behavior. Even though this is only a 20-gallon tank, the flower shrimp, clown pleco and mystery snails have their own space, and the gouramis have theirs. Having a sponge pre-filter and flow control also benefits the live plants in my tank, especially the java fern, which proliferates easily and abundantly, but often can be damaged by filter intakes when the young ferns float about the tank before finding a piece of driftwood or other material where they can grow.
In terms of reliability, I have run this filter steadily for four months as of the writing of this review, and, used in conjunction with some additional sponge filters, this has proven itself to be reliable. It is self-priming and consistently restarts automatically following a power outage. It even runs steadily during a partial water change, and the 'Bio-Falls' system seems to provide additional aeration for the water, which is important not only for providing oxygen for my water-breathing creatures, but helps remove toxic substances, which benefits all of the creatures in my tank, including the air-breathing gouramis.
To conclude, I will provide a brief list of pros and cons:
PROS:
1. It is inexpensive
2. It is effective in terms of mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration
3. It is reliable and self-priming
4. It fits the inexpensive Fluval sponge pre-filters
5. It has flow control
CONS:
1. Replacement cartridges are not easily found in stores
2. Replacement cartridges are expensive (but this can be easily addressed by using an inexpensive sponge pre-filter, extending the cartridge life to at least a full month)I purchased this filter to replace the cheap starter filter that came with my aquarium. The problem with my original filter was the lack of a bio sponge, so that every time I replaced the filter medium, ammonia levels would rise while the new filter grew bacteria, resulting in the nitrite spike when the bacteria finally caught up. I don't know whether this filter would actually handle a 50 gallon aquarium, but on a 20 gallon aquarium, cloudy water and detectable levels of ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite have become a thing of the past.
When I initially set up the filter it was a bit noisy, but after removing and reinstalling the impeller it ran with an almost indiscernible hum. The bio falls booster has the additional side effect of slowing the water on the way out of filter so that it reenters the aquarium less violently than my previous filter despite pumping twice as much water. This helps the filter run quietly with no splashing if your water level is adjusted properly.
The activated carbon filter is unique in that it is broken into a number of cells that each contain activated carbon. As a result, more of water flowing through the filter is exposed to the carbon without sacrificing ease of a slide-in cartridge.
I have only two criticisms of this filter. First, the flow of the carbon cartridge should have been made higher, as there is a small amount of overflow even when this cartridge is new if the filter flow is adjusted to the maximum setting. Second, most of the noticeable noise from the filter comes from the vibration of the lid. This can be overcome by running without the lid, or by using a small piece of tape. This vibration made me question the build quality of an otherwise excellent filter.

The cascade 100 hang on aquarium filter is an excellent choice for your filtration system. It has the bio-sponge for beneficial bacteria and the waterfall release also grows benefical bac. for your fish. Very quiet and hangs perfectly on my tall hex-aquarium. Overall I love this filter. Just make sure you do your water changes and filter changes on opposite weeks. You will kill some benefical bacterica when you do either. But the other will suffice till new bacteria grows.Read Best Reviews of Penn Plax Cascade 300 GPH Power Filter Here
This unit works perfectly, it is simple and quiet. Easy to put together and get running. Can't beat it for the price.Honestly,, This product is GREAT!!! I use ONLY THIS for a filter on my saltwater tank (55 gals) I have 4 anemones a Blue tang, puffer, picoso trigger, 2 clown fish.. NO problems with the filtration. I stand by this product.. NOW that being said,, I do need a NEW gasket for the motor between the box and the motor itself.. I am finding this alittle hard to get, BUT I do have it on order.. $1.99 part. I guess the years of saltwater did it in and it started to leak.. When I bought this item it was $49.00 NOW its $30.00 something.. AWESOME!!!!!!Saturday, March 22, 2014

This pump has been used as the sole sump pump in my brothers 60 gallon aquarium. It has been running non-stop for one year with about 4 feet of lift (my only complaint is that the flow is a tad slow at this height, hence the four stars, I would have chosen 4 3/4 stars if it was available). Even with the sump completely dry (forgetting to check water levels) the pump has not failed. Purchasing a second one for our pond. Pay attention to reviews that don't indicate that they purchased from amazon (other reviewers might be mistaking it for another pump).Read Best Reviews of Catalina Aquarium CA 2200 Aquarium Pump 850 GPH Here

Aqueon 34500 ProFlex Sump Model 1, 44-55-Gallon
So, I bought the ProFlex Sump which has kept my tank crystal-clear now for months. There is very little maintenance; actually, none unless you want to fool around with the thing.
I made one improvement, I think it is an improvement, anyway. I added several hand-cut filter media in the receiving tray. Every other week, or so, I take the media and wring it out in cold water. That's about it.
Oh, also, I bought some extra bio-balls which I used to completely fill the middle section.
After reading about the fantastic results from bio-balls I was a bit skeptical how could a bunch of plastic balls clean water. Well, somehow (allegedly anaerobic animals gobbling up the poop and pee) it all works out and I have a great looking tank with exotic discus, lots and lots of plants (about 40 or so), snails up the gazoo (which came free as hitch hikers from the lady I bought the plants from) and something really pleasant to look when I'm bored.
About the snails. These things breed like rabbits. This sump has two filter bags in the primary cell. It seems that the snails really love living in these bags because there seems to be a gajillion of them in there. All sizes, too. I guess these snails help out the anaerobic baboons in the clean-up process. I don't bother them much. Just leave 'em in there.
All-in-all I am very happy with this item and I'm also very happy that I started maintaining a fish tank after a 55 year hiatus. This was a great product and just as described. I received this item right own , time and it was used just as they described..

It will last for years I am sure. It arrived much faster than the 3 plus weeks I was quoted. The only problem I had was one hole was drilled a little bit off.
