Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 48-Inch
What got me to buy this light is the fact that you can change the bulbs something I haven't seen in other brands, don't know if they work well with plants (will update in a month) but so far they are really bright and love the fact that you can switch to moonlight (can't do it by timer but not an issue for me).
Another good thing is that you can adjust the length of the stands, my tank is not standard size so 30" is to small and 48 is too big, but I adjust it and it looks fine.
The LED are encased in a plastic tube so the water wont get close to it (I still advise to close your tank if possible mine doesn't have a hood, I just use glass to cover it)
The light creates a nice shimmering effect.
I would recommend this light for anyone on a low budget. Is it better than regular bulbs? I have no idea as I never used one but at least its friendly on the electric bill
UPDATE: I promise I will update to tell you how this light works for plants and my egeria densa has grown 6 inches in 4 days, my java moss has spread like crazy through the driftwood it was planted on. So this light is appropriate for plants and I only have a single bulb, I imagine you would need the other two if your tank is too deep but as far as an LED for plants this is clearly the way to goI own this model and the 20" model, both purchased from PetsMart in the Spring/Summer of 2012. Can't say enough good about them, but that's not why I'm writing.
Soon after purchase, I learned that Aqueon had gone out of business. More specifically, that the PetsMart parent company had purchased Aqueon and planned to make their products exclusive to Petsmart stores. This bummed me out simply b/c I don't put much faith into PetsMart. For months, I scoured the nets looking for (red) Colormax LED bulbs to no avail. And every time I'd go to PM looking for bulbs, they were always sold out. I was about to put these awesome lights up for sale due simply to the fear of not being able to maintain/repair/replace them. Then, 2 days ago, I stumbled upon this page. I can't express how happy that made me.
Rejoice! Take advantage of an absolutely fine product and support it so that we can keep it around for a good while. You don't know how close we all came to not even having this innovative light as an option.
And they are great lights. 3 (daylight spectrum) bulbs, in any size frame, is almost enough light to land commercial aircraft. I run one of the lamps (with 3 bulbs) over an open top and I have no water issues b/c the LED's are sealed in tubes. I just clean the tubes along with every maintenance session. The frame is a bit bulky (not as bulky as a standard hood and light strip), but that's a fair trade for the modularity offered. The mounting feet work well, the power cord is segmented to make removal even easier, the 48" model basically weighs nothing. The ONLY drawback is the design of the power switch, which makes it useless on a timer outside of simple on/off function. The blue LED must be manually switched on. Again, small price to pay for a great and affordable light.

We bought this light for our 150 gallon tank to replace our old florescent tube light fixture. We had gotten tired of dealing with the alge that the old light created. This light is great it creates a nice white light and after two weeks no alge. We especially like the night light feature we can still see the fish but its a nice soft glow.Read Best Reviews of Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 48-Inch Here
I have a 55g and this fits perfect over the tank. Three bulbs are installed in it; Two white and one red. Next time, I might buy one additional red but this coloring is very nice and not too bright either. The night light was not a selling feature but after having it, it is very cool!I removed the sliding arms because it caused the fixture to sit up off of the tank causing glare from the lids. The light now sits close enough that we do not notice. I do not have much of a shimmer, possibly because there isn't a strong surface disruption or maybe because the lights sits so close to the water surface.

Overall I am very pleased with this light fixture. It is nothing fancy, but it is a reasonable design and well executed for the price. The capability to put the day lights on a timer separate from the blue moon light is an obvious desired feature, but would require two power bricks or some sort of built in timer. That would increase the cost either way. This is, after all, a value purchase and not a high end light fixture. I am not wild about the adjustable mounting legs and will probably remove those due to the reflection of the LEDs off the glass cover between the fixture and the water.I also purchased a second Day LED lamp and a Colormax LED lamp. No issues with installing the bulbs and visually it provides plenty of light. The Colormax adds light in the red spectrum. That will add color to some fish and should also help give a fuller spectrum for growing plants. The blue "moon" light night mode also looks nice. I have plenty of surface water movement, but do not get any shimmer effect. That is probably because the light appears so bright.
I bought this for a 55 gallon planted aquarium that I am starting so I want to address the issue of PAR (photosynthetically active radiation), which is what matters for growing plans in an aquarium. I found values for this fixture at A Pet Forum (http://www.apetforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=164&t=265). At best, this fixture with three lamps provides a low level of light for plants with an average PAR value at 12 inches of 26.5 and a maximum PAR value of 41. Low PAR is below 30. Medium is between 30 and 80. That is not a disaster, but it means that I will select plants with low to medium light requirements and not allow a dense growth of plants near the surface. On the positive side, less trimming of plants and less CO2 will be needed.
I will report back on how well plants grow for me in this new aquarium. I figure that worse case I buy a second fixture to increase the light or replace it with something costing twice as much. I will stick with LED either way.

Aquatop CF400UV 4-Stage Canister Filter with UV 9W, 370 gph
My fish give this 5 stars, but they don't have to maintain it. My last two compaints are in the cleaning and servicing area: There's no handle to carry it by grab with both hands and hang on and it has to be full of water for the siphon to effectively start...no big deals, but Penn Plax had that covered with their Cascade filters.
A neat feature is the inlet tube, which has a built in cleaning tube connection so you can vacumm your tank with a siphon-type cleaner by removing a cap and attaching your siphon hose to it and vacumm your gravel...at least I think that's what it is, as the instructions completely avoid this feature, but it works.
The inlet/outlet hose disconnect seems to be a good idea, but I haven't cleaned my hoses yet it's very simple to disconnect a big plus for me, as my filter sits inside a cabinet that's not much wider than the filter.
I use my filter to filter not set up a colony of bacteria to biologically control the water, so the ceramic filter "beads" get no special attention, and the filter pads get rinsed along with the charcoal bag (which is an excellent addition as it can be unzipped and refilled if needed).
This is a 3 stage filter which can be easily cleaned. Detailed instructions,a carrying handle and the ability to start the siphon with no water in the filter would make cleaning easier (this cost them one star) but it's not a major inconveience my filter is housed in a narrow cabinet. If it were sitting on the floor, it would be no problem. The ultra-violet light, siphon attachment on the intake tube and tubing and fittings are positive additions. In the past six weeks, I've cleaned my filter once it's due again, but I'd say 3 weeks is what I'll be looking at, and my tank is crowded...fewer fish would make for fewer cleanings. I'd recommend it to a friend, and if I ever get another tank, this is the filter I'll buy.You cannot get a better canister filter for the price. The water in my tank is crystal clear. When this came in I was missing the outlet cover but I e-mailed the company and they sent one to me no charge. The only thing I would make a little more detailed is the instruction booklet. The hoses are a little tricky to get on at first and priming it is not as easy as the video makes it seem but once all of that is done, it is wonderful. So far so good!

I have a 1-year old 25-gallon marine tank with live rock/sand, 1 Chromis, 1 Damsel:My canister filter has been going for over a month now and greatly outdoes my last filter. My fish look great, the water is clearer. You can't imagine how happy I was to find the filter with a UV Sterilizer built in. This saved so much space and a ton of money! After working in a petstore over 3 years, I am very impressed with this product and would compare it with Eheim and Fluval, except the Aquatop filters look nicer. Overall, very pleased.

I went from a 20 gallon aquarium to a 55 gallon one, and my Marineland-PC0250HSB-Magnum-55-Gallon-250GPH just wasn't doing to job. I have a 7 inch red eared slider. I needed something more powerful, but didn't want to spend over $100. After reading TONS of reviews, I felt this was the most bang for the buck. It's for an aquarium double the size I have, but turtles are dirty.I was also having some surface algea which I had never had in the smaller tank. I used to have algea eaters, but now that he is bigger, he pretty much as ate all his tank mates, even the snails. He has a dock that sits above the water, and there was algea on the steps that I would have to clean off, and on the top of the peebles on the flooring. I started to get one of those UV algea power heads, but this I saw this, and thought maybe it would handle both needs. IT DID!!! I didn't see anything about surface algea (only green water) on the reviews, but took a chance and thought it might work. I did a half water change, and hook the this bad boy up, I purposely left all the surface algea. By two days later, it had vanished.
I never really had a problem with dirty water, but in true turtle fashion, he likes to dig a lot in his gravel. My old filter would get clogged up in two weeks with out fail. And if it was a really active digging day, he could get the water very cloudy. With this one, I don't see any debris. As soon as he stirs it up, the filter knocks it out.
I really like the return bar also. Instead of a pouring sound like the old one made (where the return is just a single pipe with a directional flow head) that just made me have to pee all the time, this is more like a water fall or fountain sound. It also has the option of extending the return lower to put it closer to the water, and lessen the noise. If have fish, and the tank is full, I guess this would be under water so you would hear it at all. He likes swimming through the bubble water the return creates, and I guess this might help with oxygenation of the water too for fish. The only fish that I put in there are food...so I am not worried about that.
The canister itself is very sturdy. The only "cheap" parts I wasn't impressed were the plastic parts that actually go into the tank, but they seem to work fine. I didn't have to buy anything special except filter media. To start I used exactly what the directions recommended. Sponge in the bottom, charcoal in the middle, and bio balls in the top. Seems to work fine, I can always adjust it later. The light is inside a thing, so you dont' have to worry about breaking it. It went together fine, and was pretty easy even without directions. I filled the canister up before attempting to prime it, because it is huge. I can't imagine trying to fill the whole thing with priming button. Priming went smoothly, and it started right up.
I will update this if something changes, but on day 5 I am thrilled.
Want Aquatop CF400UV 4-Stage Canister Filter with UV 9W, 370 gph Discount?
There are really only 2 extraordinary things about this filter: the low price, and the quietness during operation. Everything else is either mediocre or substandard. While the added UV sterilizer is interesting, everything I ever learned about those was that flow rate had to be low, in order to increase dwell time, and allow the UV light to kill the baddies. What would a 9 Watt UV sterilizer do at a 370 Gallons per hour flow rate? To be fair, I ran the UV for a day, and it did clear up some stubborn biological cloudiness from the tank maintenance. So the UV does *something* at least.
I needed to replace an aging Eheim on my 90 gallon Cichlid tank. Those fish are beautiful to look at, but they really know how to pig-up an aquarium. I needed good flow rate, and I wanted to eliminate dead spots in the tank, so the plan was to run 2 canisters. This would allow drawing water from both rear corners, and the returns would cross over at the middle. I needed 5/8" tubing in order to run an inline water heater. I also didn't want to spend a fortune. This filter seemed to be "the one", so I bought 2 of them.
Firstly, these filters are not particularly robust in design. The latches, shut-off lever, intakes, spray bars, etc. are all pretty flimsy. Nothing broke out-of-box, but down the road I fully expect for some breakage to occur, after repeated actuations.
Secondly, I was greeted with a very strong chemical smell when I opened each new filter. I opted to be safe, and I rinsed everything off, and ran fresh water through each unit. I then left everything out in the sun (under a skylight) to allow for outgassing of whatever it was that I was smelling.
There were also plastic shavings all over the interior of the filters, and there was excess silicone lubricant all over the top half of each unit. An impeller cover had also worked its way loose in transit, but that was no biggie.
Some of the fittings for the spray bars did not mate together well; I had to break out the teflon tape to add to the O.D. of one of the fittings to allow for proper fitment. If I hadn't it would have leaked all over the place.
The media baskets seemed a bit on the small side for a canister filter of this flow rate, but maybe it's just me. The Aqua Top chemical and biological media is pretty pathetic, in my opinion. There were a lot of ceramic rings stuck together, that I had to separate, and the carbon bags were utterly ridiculous. I've never had to rinse carbon so many times before.
In summary, the filter is inexpensive, it moves water, it's inexpensive, it's quiet, and it's inexpensive. Did I mention that it's inexpensive? But the build quality is nowhere near that of most of the competition. If you're OK with that, and are on a budget, this is probably the filter for you. If you light your cigars with $100 bills, move along, there's nothing here to see.

API Nexx Filter
The Good:
* Everything you need to set it up is included in the box.
* It's very quiet running, you have to really listen to hear the sound of the water movement.
* It has a strong current.
* Was easy to figure out how to take the media baskets out and fill the top section with our choice of media. (You will need mesh bags if you use anything with pieces under 1 1/2in long)
The Bad:
* If you don't put the filters on the bases just right, they will Leak.
* The directions on how to hook the filter up are pictorial only. And don't always make lots of sense. They're also hidden inside the longer box inside the main one.
* Some of the clamps they give you are pretty cheap feeling, so we may need to replace them at some point soon.
* The part of the filter that sits inside the tank, doesn't lock into the holder. We had to rubber-band it in place or the fish keep knocking it out/off. (We have large fish, so this may not be an issue you have.)
So far, I'm liking it, but it was very disconcerting to notice about 3 hours after setting it all up that the water level in the tank was lower than it had been. We checked to make sure the tank wasn't leaking, and then realized the leak was coming from the filters! They were locked in, when we lifted up on the handle, the entire unit came off the floor. However it must have been off by a little bit as water was streaming slowly between the base and the filter case. Unlocking it and rocking it back and forth while pressing down seemed to help. But ultimately we had to take it completely off a few times and put it back before it apparently locked down correctly. After that, no leaks. But you may wish to have a flashlight near you for a bit after putting this together to check for leaks just in case.
Over-all, it seems to be a good filter, and it's easy to take apart which is what we needed. You can use other kinds of media, not just what they recommend, but you'll need filter bags as the holes in the top of the compartments are fairly large and small particles may fall out and clog things up. To get into the media compartment, lift out the long media basket thing by the handle. Push in on the blue tabs on the sides, and pull, the top should pop off leaving you with the yellow basket attached to the long plastic bits the carbon slides over. The basket will come off those with a good tug, and then everything snaps back into place. What's not clear from the pictures online (or on the box, or the description) is that this filter consists of two major components. The first is the canister which includes the base, container and media baskets (two of them, one on each side.) The second is the water pump -it's essentially a small pond pump that mounds via suction cups inside your aquarium which pushes water via the included hoses to the canister, and drives enough pressure to return the water to the tank on the other side of the loop.
Pro:
Quite possibly this is the quietest filter system I've (n)ever heard. The air pump driving the tanks water feature is far louder than this canister system (and it's not all that bad.)
Had no issues with water leakage at all, anywhere in the system. Possible that I cheated a bit to avoid the problem mentioned by the previous reviewer. Used a small amount of divers pure silicone grease on all the "O" rings and mating gaskets during assembly.
Flow rate at default setting seems just about perfect for a 40Gal tank.
Con:
The dial on the water pump to adjust flow will not turn I've applied pretty much as much force as I think a plastic dial can take before breaking. No dice. No idea what the different settings might mean for water flow.
The suction cups for the pump mount don't hold the pump in place very well. I consider this a seriously lazy design flaw. There's no reason the manufacturer couldn't have gone with a clip in design of some sort. And I don't have large fish knocking it about . . . slowly over time that pump wants to wander out of the mount.
The media baskets are very limited the bottom part is nothing more than a hollow square cage/bracket to hold the four sided pre-charged filter packets. The top part is very tiny for ceramic or plastic bio-media. The included bio-media stars do not adequately load even that small space, you might need or want more.
I'm thinking of doing a slight mod to this thing to increase the bio-filtration, as well as the use of mesh bags to allow me to use bulk carbon or other filtration materials. If it goes well will try to remember to update this review.
Update: No mods required. API sells a pair of insert foam parts that go into the bottom of each canister. Look for "API NEXX FOAM 30 PPI." What's important to know about these is they should NOT be used at the same time as the pre-shaped filter cartridges and four sided caddies. It's not really clear from the instructions (although there is a single small picture that shows the swap) but you need to remove the caddy/cage plastic part from the top compartments before using the foam.
Foam goes into the very bottom of both compartments. Your bagged media goes on top of that, then the disk shaped compartment for the bio-stars on top of the bags, and finally the lids. On the truly horrible pictogram documentation look specifically at section C, 10b for the one and only reference to how this looks. Be very sure that the bagged media is lose enough to allow good water flow, and that it does not require you to tamp down the top baskets to put on the lids.
WARNING: If you try to use the foam inserts and fail to remove the four sided caddy this canister will NOT seal properly and may spray water from the top of the lids.I setup the filter a couple of days ago for my 20 gallon tank. I needed a filter that could expand capacity since I'm planning on moving my juvenile Axolotls to a large tank once they get a bit bigger. I also needed to hook up to an Aquarium Chiller: Aqua Euro USA Max Chill Aquarium Chiller.
The Good:
*Very intuitive and easy to setup, given the pictorial instructions.
*Included the correct sized tubing for use with my Chiller.
*Includes a little extra piping for extending the lead to the pump should you need to place it further down inside the tank.
*The pump is SUPER quiet, at least compared to my last filter that hangs on the back of the tank.
*Includes more than enough suction cups for the pipes and such.
*I noticed a couple of people complained about the pump not fitting properly into the clip that suction cups to the tank wall. The instructions are very unclear, but they show that the pump also is suction cupped to the clip itself, making a very secure hold for it.
*I LOVE the feature that allows you to change the filters without needing to turn off the pump, it just diverts the flow while you change the filter media!
The Bad:
*The pictorial instructions were a bit hard to follow at times
*Dosen't leave my tank "crystal clear" like it advertised, but that may be due to the phosphates in my planted aquarium.
*The pump's flow rate is NOT ADJUSTABLE. It has a knob for it, but its been glued to be fully open or something. The current is pretty strong which I need to avoid for my type of fish. Looks like I'll be investing in a spray bar or something...

Fish tank owners: DO NOT BUY THE API NEXX CANISTER FILTER!!! It leaks from every seal after only a few months. This is one of the only things I have bought without doing much research and I wish I had. Every review I read says the same thing: it leaks. I will be filing a complaint tomorrow with API.
I was impressed with the features, simplicity and the fancy videos. I bought it around Christmas 2012. Just a couple days ago I noticed that the tank was really low (which is typically from evaporation), so I added more water. The next morning I noticed that my 40-gallon tank was down about 8 10 gallons and there was water on the floor. After looking, I saw the filter gushing water from the bottom. I tried to clean and re-seat the seals and put it back into place and it immediately began gushing, now from the bottom AND the top. At that point I gave up and I'm putting my old filter back into use.
There is a section of beautiful hardwood floor in my living room about 15 feet long that is damaged (discolored, bowed) from the water, and it soaked through to the finished basement. The basement ceiling in my theater room has water marks. Water was dripping from a light fixture, which soaked an area on my brand new rug. There has to be at least $1000 in water damage. Hopefully there isn't more water that kills my entire AV system.

We thought this was a great product when we received it and put it on our tank. I guess we will have to take it off and toss it. What a waste!Read Best Reviews of Deep Blue Sea & Midnight Sea DBBG - 24 in. - Sold by ft. Here
This was a bit taller than my tank, so I made sure to put the darkest blue section starting at the bottom and used a razor to trip the top excess off. I didn't want the background to be too brightly exposed. I used simple double-side tape all along the parameter of the back side of the tank to apply this with no ripples. Make sure to clean the glass well or otherwise dirt/prints will show up once the background is applied.Want Deep Blue Sea & Midnight Sea DBBG - 24 in. - Sold by ft. Discount?
Great product! i had read the reviews and was worried it would come in 4 sections because of the odd ordering process but it didnt. it came in a 4 foot piece rolled up neatly. i read other reviews 1st and saw how to order otherwise i wouldnt have understood. when you order 1 item, it is only 299 for 1 foot. so you just up your 'items' to 4. (for a 55 gal tank for example). Thanks! :)Thursday, January 23, 2014

Had to review a YouTube video before I could understand where to insert CO2 hose into device. Instructions in a foreign language with poor illustrations (this is the reason for the 4 stars). Works well with my 40 gallon but w/ high CO2, it's a bit noisy. Overall excellent product, makes super fine bubble mist. Best of any device I've used as a CO2 diffuser. Would highly recommend.I purchased this for a 29 gallon planted aquarium. I read the reviews and watched the YouTube video so I kinda knew what to expect in terms of installation. The directions are in an Asian language as others have said but the YouTube video is enough to figure it out more or less. When the motor runs, this product is terrific. It almost completely dissolves CO2 bubbles coming in and releases just a bit of a fine mist coming from the outlet holes. It ran quietly and flawlessly BUT only for a few weeks. Its a shame the motor they use is unreliable. Another reviewer had the same issue as I did and I knew this before ordering it but decided to take a chance anyway thinking it might be a one-off. Unfortunately, it appears its just how these are made. It is a shame though because, it really did work well. I would definitely buy a similar model if it came from a reliable manufacturer and I would be willing to pay more if I knew the motor would last for years and not weeks. As is, it was a waste of money for me.Amazon should add another level for rating NO STAR and this product deserves NO STAR at all. It stopped working after 3 weeks, probably less than that. I only found out about this problem becuase I noticed my drop checker was color blue instead of the usual green. And that is how I found out that that this garbage product has stopped working and it is not so cheap at all.Thursday, December 19, 2013

SeaClear Eclipse 3 Compatible Aquarium
I should have done some extra research before this, but the dimensions of this tank perfectly replace the 29 gallon glass tank and stand that I have. The Eclipse 3 will add on another $130 to your cost, so be aware of this. I went the creative way and saved money, but not exactly what I originally planned as I thought any 30 inch hood would have fit...This tank was a replacement to my old glass 29 gal tank. I wanted to get a larger tank, but not change the stand. I chose this because it had the same base dimensions, which allowed me to reuse my old base cabinet. I love it. It seems significantly larger than the old tank, and the seamless corners gives it a great clean look. The Eclipse 3 system provides plenty of light and adds to the clean look. It's quiet too, although you definitely hear the sound of running water. Since it's 24 inches tall, you need extra long arms :), or just get a new set of tools to help with cleaning and planting.
